it ain't about God, but the subject of god it's about how humans rely so much on a higher power when things go terribly wrong... that's about us, how some of us, take this concept of gods so much at hearts, because they can't see what else to do. fear, despair, helplessness all turn people towards gods. and there just no way for them to take it lightly. unfortunatly, humans have got this weak condition, where they sometimes stop being rational, and go with some impossible divine justice, hoping with all their hearts, that existence has a premeditated harmonious purpose. when we all can obviously understand that there isn't and never was. God is a concept, an old way of looking at things we don't understand, by now we know so much better. I would only hope we could forward, become intelligent societies, with morals that don't have to depend on some religious faith to exist. I just hope we could put back the gods where they belong now, with santa and others among the fairytales, and stop endoctrinating children with them, til it messes them up, hooked on delusion and blind faith it's time for seeing further, knowing better and stop letting dieties sell us these false hopes. |

this song seems to capture the complete low the young Robert Smith was experimenting at the time, going as far as he could to describe it on "Pornography", all elements of existencial pain are there, randomly citing phrases, of events in desolation totally emotionless, remoted to his own feeling, cold, jaded and with the feeling he's turning to stone. so obviously his outlook on life was being fully tormented and overwhelmed. which in itself is a pretty sane thing for a young person to go through... for having a hard time with cruel nature of things, leaving childhood behind and facing what is all but an ideal world to live in. Anyway, I have a great appreciation for this powerful sad song, despite the tricky fact that it tends to make you make you sink as low, with it, through that abyss of despair, blame music who has such strengths to articulte human emotions so well, that it can chew and spit it all in your face, so much better than any other form of expression I believe. then, for writing such a collection of songs, I would think that Smith was actually going through a bad relationship, some break up that sucked all life out of him, which could have add up to his initial awareness and pain regarding life. I guess from there it all went snowballing... into the darkest state of mind, as it often is, these kinds of things happen to trigger the worst in human souls. funny if only then he'd knew that some 8 years later, he would be hugely loved and respected, making amazing music, and clowning around singing light and lovely things like "Friday I'm in Love"...... isn't life is full of surprises :) HAHAHA |

There is the feeling over having no control, having to run, overwhelmed by how things are turning out. its not about a guy, to whom things happens... thats no use really to have lyrics like this. I have the usual bummer to read stuff here, that are just reducing lyrics to some sort of tvsoap storyboards...lol come on, what matters is always and only the feeling you get! something speaking of a common human behavior. this here observasion tells about what anyone experiences in life when losing touch, facing a low, a terrible new thing, unpredicatble making one losing its mind. being unable to point it out, to put your finger on it. your life is just turning all upside down.. but somehow you must keep a grip.. or run away as you can, just for a while.. til you can't hide. |

here they clearly aim at our times where religions have made it hell for humans, to live in peace, having freedom and truth held in the hands of nations leaders, representing religious fervants more than anything. these are the most egoistical people, raised on fear, of not being on the right side, therefore embracing religion to be safe from hell.... then pushing their God on forth through their kids lives, as if... it tells what it's like to live among these lies, ignorance and the atrocities it has made. not only spread by those fanatics, but shaping a whole society, in a fictious state of hope and righteousness. all that conditioning breeds intolerance, the moral questions are hardly understood among such close-minded population, allowing no acknowledging of facts. all the pride and glory of religion in the meantime is the easiest grip for a government to be dragging simple people all down to the same path, to follow straight into war, leading most to accept absurd conditions and decisions, thinking so or otherwise you become outted, unamerican, pointed as nuisance. unallowed to be questioning those decisions, nor going against what they dare to call hope. for in today's society, its only a by being blind living by basic lies that everything keeps on going worse and worse... so yeah here its put in an franck but ironical way too, and underlining how you better not forget to keep thinking for yourself. do not let institution rule your soul, any of those religion's moral code tell you whats right and what isnt. and if you're too brainwashed, try to clean your third eye, and get over false promises and exagerated claims, put you to sleep, all in the name of so-called great sentiments, greater things, these are nothing but inventions of men for the better. enough with people raised on stupid notions praising heaven, fearing hell, honouring nothing but their fear, as it keeps them quiet and in place. |

To me this one is obviously about being emotionaly overwhelmed, about how we are struggling with logic, a purpose for life, and any sense to rely to, when going thtough life's trial. put in the situation where the helplessness of it is fought with no real weapon. the total confusion takes over when confronted to uncontrollable things, as the song depicts one dealing with a close friend's stuggle with death. we're left with little to make sense of, little to know how to justify why things are going they are. as usual with people, in such distress, confusion and helplessness some people tend to compensate it with beliefs of a holy presence, as they grab this as their hope. hoping someone is there no matter what...relying on that religious faith for to find some salvation. |

Man, this song is the straightest as it can be, why do people twist it into the most cliché view they got from a particular word, going towards interpretation that usually are taking all the purity and universality of the lyrics out. To me, it goes into a love song, that speaks for anyone, anyone that happens to be alive. that sees life as one incredible enigma, intending to make something good out of it any way. when someone stands by you, you feel like looking for a right way to live, even more. even through the helplessness, confusing states of not having a clue who or where in the world we are. there's a lurking quest for finding light, magic in the best of places (no true reference to any gods.. sorry) so to keep heading ahead always, with hope, ethics, and somehow stand your ground. for all good reasons, we know we need to honor the ones who are giving us love, hope (a face with a view) showing, reflecting greater things to us. home is love, love is home, home is not up there, it isn't the notion people were raised with, home high in the sky, its always just right where you see it, when you finally aknowlege where you stand, and what you're standing for. home is the place for you, when you deciede to find peace within it. this song not only speaks of this "journey" but is a beautiful declaration of love to it all first, as I hear it. it sings for the glory of the one we find true love into. also as much as it is an ode to life, when it fills up with not only illusions of hope, but a sense you can make a better man of yourself through it. by turning to love, doing good, placing it above everything else. |

I franckly believe that, the very first line is very misguiding for all those who took it for a starting point of their own interpretation of these lyrics. Being in love, is feeling alive, feeling connected, and in need of something, there he doesn't quite explain why and how to himslef, but to adjust to the main truth he feels he asks himself to take more part, to commit without letting things holding him back, without tricking himself into anything false, because it's the only way, and the only lifetime he's to have. although this song was a monster hit, it's a song that is most honest, emotional and beautiful. still rings the same to me, bless the the 80's... :) |

I find this song so good, extremely creative in the construction, and well thoughts provoking too as a whole.. within those disturbed and disturbing words Kate displays such incredible emotions this represents something of a inner struggle.. maybe as much as a cry against one's soul being possessed anyway...it is obviously full of tensions and pretty nightmarish... ( i'm not english sorry if isometimes make up awful words along =) then the music and melodies too are haunting and just strong enough to make this all go 'slam' together, and the song is so powerful by results thanxs to a powerful and daring original manner of making music that really belongs exclusively to incredibles artists such as she. about the lyrics I can't say much, I do go by the interpretations and historical facts given here which are seemingly pretty interesting!
