Massive Attack – Teardrop Lyrics 16 years ago
Has anyone thought of the posibility of anorexia, bullemia and other eating disorders.

Black flowers. Depression.
Most faithful mirror, gentle impulsion, makes me lighter.
Teardrop on the fire. Can't stop it, can't help yourself.

That probably isn't the meaning of the song, but I think about it whenever I hear the song.

KT Tunstall – False Alarm Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is about being in a hard time.

"I'm trying to put this thing to bed
I've drugged it in its sleep"
She's trying to make sense of the situation, trying to get through the woods.

"There isn't many memories
I'm comfortable to keep"
Most of her memories are ones she wish she didn't have.

"This ball keeps rolling on
It's heading for the streets"
I think Shikonaori had this one right. The situation is dragging her in a dangerous direction.

"Keep expecting you to send for me
The invitation never comes"
I'm not sure what this means. The pickle she's in could be related to her love life, like Shikonaori said. Anyone have an idea that isn't related to love?

"Each time I turn around
There's nothing there at all"
She feels crowded and confused, but she can't figure out what's wrong.

"So tell me why I feel like
I'm up against a wall"
She's between a rock and a hard place, possibly feeling pressured to make a decision and none of them seem like good choices.

"But maybe it's a flase alarm
And all the answers sound the same"
Maybe she doesn't need to be so worried about it. Maybe if she takes a deep breath and takes a look at it from outside, she'll be fine.

"Just colors bleeding into one
That doesn't have a name"
The choices are the colors, and if she just gives them time to bleed into each other and sort themselves out, creating a new color, which is the right choice.

"Maybe I can't see
Maybe it's just me"
She realizes that she might just be psyching herself up over it and the answers right in front of her, but she's so frantic she wouldn't feel it even if it bit her on the ass.

I hear...
"Now the curtain's coming up
The audience is still"
She's being put on the hot seat and everyone's waiting for her to make her move.

Again, I hear something a little different. An apostrophe and a letter different.
"I'm struggling to cater for
The space I'm meant to fill"
She's having trouble doing the things she really needs to do in life.

"And distance doesn't care
No distance doesn't care"
Maybe she means emotional/mental distance? Distance won't help you because distance doesn't care what you're going through. When she comes back from her book, or her movie, or her music the problem will still be there.

"I'm trying to put this thing to bed
I drugged it in its sleep
Remember what you said
Are you comfortable to keep it?
Keep it?"
I think someone made a promise to her that everything would be alright. Now that that the problem hasn't been solved yet are they sure they can keep the promise?

Iron & Wine – Jezebel Lyrics 16 years ago
I really like all of the explanations and meanings posted already. I think that this song means something different to everyone that hears it.

My interpretation is that Jezebel isn't one specific person in history or in the future. Instead, she's a part of every trouble woman's life. Like Jane and John Doe. Jezebel means "impure" and "to blame".

The dogs, I think, are people in her life that are cruel to her and put her down. Even though dogs are called "man's best friend" a dog is sometimes seen as a cruel, filthy creature or someone that is unfaithful or disloyal.

It sounds like a love song from someone who loved a Jezebel, and she ran away, took her life, or can't be found.

The man was born to know this woman that captured his heart, but he didn't hold on to her tight enough. It's like trying to hold on to a breeze.

Jezebel went walking in the woods where cedars lined the road, knowing that the "dogs" would be there. At this point, she didn't care anymore. Her blouse on the ground represents physical or, more likely, emotional attacks.

The dogs hurt her but then apologize saying that they won't do it again. They'll love her more next time. Then the next line gives me the idea that the dogs feel like her whole purpose in life is to me tormented, compared to the singer feeling as if she was born to inspire.

Jezebel was born to to take the fall for the mistakes of others, and the singer is in awe at her courage and strength. He wishes he could be only half as brave she is.

But she's gone and the singer can't find her. She left before he had the chance to tell her he loved her and to protect her.

I think the mountain is the terrible heartbreak he's feeling without her, and he's waiting like the dawn aching to see the day.

Jezebel inspired everything that he's ever done, and he did it all for her. But, even if she knew how much he loved her, she knew that the dogs were coming for her, and I think that she was so through with running that she allowed them to destroy her.

Neko Case – Hold On, Hold On Lyrics 16 years ago
Agreed! Definitely is a song about disbelief in love. Here's my interpretation of it...

It starts out as her saying that she's so distant from herself and her family that she cares more about strangers than her own blood. I'm not quite sure what she means by "hanging 'round the ceiling." Perhaps that she feels much lower than her family, that she isn't worthy, or that her depression gets her down when she's around her family.

Then she says compared to some people, she's really dated a lot of men, looking for love, but she's never found it.

The most important line of the song:

That echo chorus lied to me with its:
"Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on,"

I'm sure that it means that she's always told to hold on, because love will come. It's repeated so often that it seems like an echo, or a chorus. Love never comes, of course. The echo is lying to her.

The next verse is pretty clear. She's experienced love on either end of the spectrum, but never true love which is smack-dab in the middle. She's either broken hearts (mean girl) or is the "booty call" (in-between girl) as said before. The sadness becomes her only love and it's as funny as true love, which isn't funny at all.

Then, at a wedding, which is the ultimate proclamation of true love, and she's so distant from everyone and everything that she doesn't want to go home with anyone anymore. She takes a valium which numbs her pain, but the feeling isn't real. It's a funny as real love, which isn't funny at all. And the feeling is as real as true love, which isn't real at all.

And people keep telling her to hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on.

There's my interpretation of it. I hope it makes sense to all of you.

KT Tunstall – Black Horse and the Cherry Tree Lyrics 17 years ago
All of these explanations are very good, but I think that people are making too much of it, with symbolism and all.

Not everything has a secret, hidden meaning that's very personal to the artist. She's a musician, and she makes art. Just like Picasso make some really funky stuff that looks like a bunch of colors splattered on to paper, this might be the equivalent in music.

While there are boatloads of metaphors in the song, they're put together in a way that I think are meant to be catchy, fun, and confusingly artistic.

Santana – Just Feel Better Lyrics 17 years ago
I really doubt that this is a love song.

I've always imagined it like Steven Tyler is telling a story about a girl he used to know. She been heartbroken again and again, and she feels like she's at the point where she doesn't have the strength to keep living anymore. Like someone that's been beaten - eventually, you stop feeling the blows.

The song is a very long, beautiful quote from the girl as she pouring her heart out to him. She's telling him how close she is to giving up on everything, even her dreams, because every day is exactly the same. It never gets better. She's telling him that she would do anything, no matter how wrong it is, if it would just make her feel better. And in all of her life, he's the only one that hasn't ignored that she's in pain.
