George Michael – Monkey Lyrics 6 years ago
I’ve just come here to check what people think this song means and I’m actually PMSL at the fact that someone thinks this song was written about any gay relationship let alone Fadi Fawaz.

Fadi was a recent boyfriend and was definitely not around in the days of Faith album eta.

The amount of stupid people saying things with such conviction is what is wrong with this world.

That being said I think it’s really easy to pigeon hole a song like this but I definitely think it’s about some kind of addiction and I would say it’s more in akin to a sex addiction or even a cheating addiction but the beauty of music is that it can mean anything you want it to mean (except about boyfriends he hadn’t even met yet which is absolutely ludicrous)!

It does sadden me still to even talk about him in the past tense....

Jimmy Eat World – For Me This Is Heaven Lyrics 9 years ago
I can't believe people think this is a break up song, can't you read?

I agree with everyone about it being about a relationship and not a break up. He's talking about time a lot. He loves this girl and wants their relationship and the feeling they have for each other to stay that way for ever.

The "can you still feel the butterflies" idea (which I must say is the most beautiful JEW lyric if not the most beautiful lyric in the whole of music, is not the only idea sung about. No matter how happy, elated and loved up he feels about this relationship, he knows he's risking his heart and taking a leap of faith. He talks about losing himself in his courage and how how his girls saying that she should allow herself to be happy.

I've been in a relationship where from the word go because if these butterflies, I felt he was the one but had to wait for "clumsy time" to find out if the butterflies were still there and whether or not they were the one for me. Sadly they weren't but this was one of the songs of inspiration and explained how I felt about this relationship.

He knows he's opening himself up to be vulnerable and she to. They're relationship is perfect at the moment and their love is real and true. They can't know if this love will last forever but they can only bravely hope that it will. He believe that now when the time ends they will still hold the same butterflies they once had for each other.

An alternative meaning which I think is just as poignant is that he's talking about/to someone that he hasn't even met yet. I've had my most serious and intense relationship yet. As I said above, thought he was the one for and I'd spend the rest of my life with him but sadly we had to part ways. I'm always looking at the stars wishing to meet the man who is meant for me. Someone who I will still feel butterflies for "when the time we have now ends". Also the fact he says "wherever you are Angel" which makes me think he still searching for his special one.

You might not think it means this but read over the lyrics and it does fit very well!

Jimmy Eat World – Please Say No Lyrics 10 years ago
I'm trying to put together a Love + Heartbreak blog playlist together in time for Valentines. I'm thinking of putting this down but the song's a mixture of contradictions. After reading your post, I shouldn't feel confused about the contradiction and neither should you. Some of the best pieces of art are those that evoke conflicting emotions and this is a perfect example.

Yes he's saying "please say no". He wants her to make the call, he wants her to have the courage to stick to their decision of breaking up because he doesn't have the strength to. He's pleading for her to give a resounding no so he has no choice in the matter. Because if it were up to him, if she wasn't so strong willed, he'd try getting back together. These feelings are particularly potent when drunk!

He knows that they won't work out. If they got back together, it'll be like the same old routine because old habits die hard. But love is familiar and behind the "please say no" facade is someone, despite knowing that nothing will change if they did get back together, he doesn't have the strength alone to distance himself through this separation.

Also, on the surface it seems as though he's warning her not to get back together:

"If all you're really hoping for is peace of mind
Don't come to me with questions
You'll just waste your time
Exactly what you're looking for
Is what you'll find
All I see around me
Is a losing bag"

However, if we take it that he's saying "please say no" but if she accepted him back and wanted to try again, he would, then this verse takes a whole new meaning. He's broken up with someone who's been a big part of his life, who may have contributed partly or largely to the break up. He's self pitying here but also in denial, he feels he destroyed the relationship and doesn't deserve a second chance to be with her. He says "if you're hoping for is peace of mind, don't come to me with questions" yet he's the one that started this conversation in the first place "I had a couple in me so I reached out".

Anyway, I think this is a long winded discussion when to understand this idea is to think about a relationship you've been in where you've loved your other half dearly and been with for a fair amount of time but hopelessly broke up because there was nothing left to salvage. How did you feel being without that person when you separated? It's all conflicting emotions! :)

CeeLo Green – I Want You Lyrics 13 years ago
For me, this song is about a guy who has been with his girl for a while. He loves but the lust/desire/spark has disappeared.

"Sweetheart it's been real, but... the thrill is gone."

It's about how he wants to desire her again and is willing her to experience new things with him in order to rekindle the flame.

"That's why I want you to run away with me and experience something new"

After this flame is rekindled, he has a rediscovered enthusiasm and adoration for her. He thanks God for making someone so amazing as her and asserts his committment and devotion to loving her.

"Lovin' you, I'll make it my job. Thank you Lord, thank you Lord. This is it. My God!"

I can't get over how goddamned beautiful this song is, instrumentally, lyrically... everything. Makes me gush every time I hear it. I can't believe this hasn't been commented on more.

My boyfriend and I make mixtapes for each other and I'm currently working on an old school/soul/motown mixtape for him (he needs to be educated on that genre, hah) but I'll be making him a current soul playlist and by God, this is so on it!

Paramore – Decoy Lyrics 13 years ago
Totally awesome song.

For me personally, I broke up with my ex who cheated on me, spent a year getting over it and met someone else. I wasn't too keen on dating this new guy. He was a lovely guy, not bad looking even though I didn't fancy him like mad (major attraction is very important to me). I thought twice about dating him but friends and family encoursged me to. I thought this is what I needed, someone different to get over what a shit time I'd had in the past year and it didn't seem like a bad consolation. I was fooling myself all along looking at the whole relationship retrospectively. I used him for 3 years until I realised he was last on my list of priorities and kicked him out and couldn't put up with it anymore. But I'm not sorry, the relationship brought me out of the deep, dark depths of depression and I am emotionally stable now. It was selfish snd I did/do love him as a friend, but nothing more.

Sorry for the ramble. It's just I identified with this song since I first heard it! I can't wait to see them in November!

"And the one poor child who saved this world
And there's ten million more who probably could
If we all just stopped and said a prayer for them"

The poor child he sings about has to be Jesus Christ. I think the 'ten million more' they're referring to may be people who have died in vain, such as soldiers at war etc.

In general 'Better Days' is about dreaming of a time where all bad things are removed from the world such as poverty and war which are and have been very topical.

Paramore – The Only Exception Lyrics 14 years ago
For someone to say this song is bland and/or boring shows that they aren't appreciating what's infront of them. Just because it isn't one of their uptempo rock tunes doesn't mean to say that it doesn't have any depth to it. It is simple, bare and full of lyrical genius. The live acoustic to this is unbelievable! A lot of ideas are put through in this song, we react to what we saw our parents go through and are affected by it. She witnessed her parents having a pretty hard time and thought love wasn't worth the hassle, the risk. For her to abandon what she was brought up to believe was right and choose to love someone despite her fears is a very courageous thing to do, you cannot take that kind of sincerity away from this song! If you haven't felt vulnerable in the face of love then you couldn't possibly relate.

Paramore – Misguided Ghosts Lyrics 14 years ago
HelenaFiego is completely right. I won't try to type out my interpretation as I could not get it as to the point as they did! But I was at the Paramore gig in London yesterday. It was the first time I saw them in concert and I could not believe how many young girls there were, who looked like lost little sheep with Hayley's ginger hairstyle (even though ironically she's now turned blonde). It is so obvious that this is written to her fans. She is just a normal person, there is no need to put her on a pedestal. It made me feel sick seeing all these girls, I felt like screaming at them 'get your own identity'! I just hope they do find their own person! It's so sad to what to be like someone else so much. You are you, just work with what you got!

Foo Fighters – The Pretender Lyrics 14 years ago
This is screaming 'political song'. I don't understand how anyone can say this was written about a relationship! I can relate to the song in terms of friends that have been 'pretenders' and I feel like I'm the only one who knows what they're playing at and will not fall for it. But that's my relation to the song, not the songwriters meaning. This is absolutely a song directed at the US government and nothing else.

Demi Lovato – Catch Me Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is so heart melting! It's a typical cutesy oxymorony song, 'so please don't catch me' which leads to 'just catch me'.

She's fighting against love because she knows it's difficult, hard, complex. She knows she will be vulnerable if she gives her heart away. But she then resigns herself to it, she takes a leap of faith.

Demi Lovato – Trash Lyrics 15 years ago
Apart The Middle, this is by far my favourite song of Demi's. I totally agree that it's raw; it's in the lyrics and the way she sings it. On the one side, it's full of teenage angst but on the other side she sings it with such hurt in her voice that young or old can feel what she feels.

I cannot believe this song didn't make it onto the album. It is probably the only song I've heard of hers that would make even the Disney haters like her.

Give this girl a few years, she'll break away from Disney and she will be recording songs that are completely and utterly genius!

"Don't try to cover up your,
Your new flame
That's seething through your eyes
I can see it from ten feet away
And I know just who is burning"

It's just so tragically beautiful!

Robbie Williams – Karma Killer Lyrics 15 years ago
I absolutely hate music fascists. Written or co-written, input has been put in by the artist.
"Because this isn't indie/alternative/rock and doesn't appear in the gospel that is NME, I deem this as sh*t". People seriously need to get a grip on reality. Grow a pair of cojones instead of regurgitating whatever NME has said. You have a brain don't you? It's a good song, that's all that needs to be said.

I do prefer No Regrets to this song. But it seems both are aimed at Take That.

"You're not a man, stand and deliver."

This could be about Gary Barlow. Firstly, the rest of the Take That band members stood together against him. It may have been that Gary wanted him out of the band more than the others did, maybe Robbie felt he should have been a man and stood against him without 'moral support' from other members.

Secondly, it could be a reference to Gary's solo career. Robbie has done considerably better than Gary as a solo artist, Gary was tipped to be the next George Michael. No one thought Rob could do it and had more faith in Gary. Maybe Robbie is referring to Gary's songs, like "you're a p*ssy, write better songs FFS" or something like that.

(It pains me to say this about Gary Barlow, because I love him so damn much)!

I love any song to do with Karma. So angsty and FU!

The Cure – Disintegration Lyrics 15 years ago
I've just listened to this song over and over again and have delved into a different interpretation to the one I had before. There is so much to analyse, I'm finding it hard to type it all out! I think the song is about infidelity. Specifically, the narrator is cheating on his partner with a younger model "the stench of a love for a younger meat".

"Oh I miss the kiss of treachery
The shameless kiss of vanity
The soft and the black and the velvety
Up tight against the side of me
And mouth and eyes and heart all bleed
And run in thickening streams of greed
As bit by bit it starts the need
To just let go
My party piece"

The first verse starts with the narrator describing what feels like when he's around the "younger meat". The description is lustful, insatiable. The kiss is treacherous and shameful, he knows that what he is doing will hurt his partner but the "soft and the black and the velvety up tight against the side of me" is too hard to resist. As he is trying to resist temptation "mouth and eyes and heart all bleed", "greed" get's the better of him. The temptation "bit by bit" is getting to him and the last line "party piece", he has succumbed.

"Oh I miss the kiss of treachery
The aching kiss before I feed
The stench of a love for a younger meat
And the sound that it makes
When it cuts in deep
The holding up on bended knees
The addiction of duplicities
As bit by bit it starts the need
To just let go
My party piece"

Here is where he actually mentions "younger meat", it's very predatory, as if he's in control of this young girl. The rest is pretty graphic, they end up having sex... "when it cuts in deep, holding up on bended knees". I can't get over how horny the narrator is! It's all very 'forbidden fruit', extremely lustful.

He has now told his partner about his cheating and there are children involved. It seems to me that "when we both of us knew how the ending would be" is referring to how fickle his. Maybe, they had to go through many trials and tribulations before they settled down and were 'happy'. He may have been fickle in the past, maybe the promiscuous type. He must have promised her that she was the one for him, that he was committed to her and they were going be happy, that's what they dreamt of: "songs about happiness murmered in dreams". But deep down, both of them knew that he would never change and would always be lusting after something else "when we both of us knew how the ending would be".

"Now that I know that I'm breaking to pieces
I'll pull out my heart
And I'll feed it to anyone...
...It's easier for me to get closer to heaven
Than ever feel whole again"

It seems though, that he still regards his partner as a soulmate. He is rapped with guilt about what he's done, "it's easier for me to get closer to heaven, than ever feel whole again". This may be because the narrator is not a monogamous character. It seems like Robert is concerned with monogamy and questions both here and in other songs, why is monogamy seen as the right pattern for relationships. (The song on Wild Mood Swings called This Is A Lie refers to the idea of monogamy being a foolish institution "why each of us must choose, I've never understood, one special friend, one true love, why each of us must lose everyone else in the world").

"I leave you with photographs
Pictures of trickery
Stains on the carpet and
Stains on the memory
Songs about happiness murmured in dreams
When we both of us knew
How the end always is"

He leaves her with the good memories they had together, the photographs which demonstrate that they were happy, which was really just an illusion. If he were happy, he wouldn't have to cheat and would have been satisfied being with just her. Again, he reiterates that they knew how things would pan out "how the end always is".

The lyrics do sound like it could be about suicide, it's very probable. But I find suicide or drugs an easy answer to almost any lyrics. This song is so f-ing amazing, that I needed to find a more alluring explanation to it.

He is amazing at summing up all the flaws, all the things that can go wrong in relationships. I don't know about his own relationship, but no news is good news right? The Cure – Cut Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with Toaster Oven, it's not necessarily about a relationship, could just aswell be about a friendship. Something happened today with one of my friends which got my back up. From my view, she chose another friend over me, even though I had been there for her no matter what but the other friend has from the start, treated her like sh*t. I felt a bit betrayed but mostly it was how alone I felt without her being there to support me.

It's as if the narrator has finally decided to not put up with anymore sh*t from this person, and even if they do hold this person in admiration, they have to become familiar with the fact that this person doesn't seem to care like they used to and should really let go. "Cut" them out of their life.

I do think Disintergration is an amazing album, one of my faves, if not THE favourite. But Wish cannot be faulted. Some very intense emotions experienced in some very intense songs.

The Cure – How Beautiful You Are... Lyrics 15 years ago
I get what you're all saying and I do agree. The narrator has finally woken up to how 'ugly' she is and how different they are in the way that they interpret what is beautiful and what is ugly. But what confuses me is the last line in the song, does anyone have an interpretation for it?

"That no one ever knows or loves another"

Is that referring to some kind of comment on monogamy or something?

submissions
Howie Day – She Says Lyrics 15 years ago
By looking at the video for this song it's obvious that the narrator is singing to his ex girlfriend's new guy. But my own personal interpretation is different. I see the narrator as the girl's current boyfriend and he is singing this song to his girlfriend's ex.

It's as if the ex boyfriend has been bugging and sniffing around his ex partner because he's interested in her again. Feeling a little insecure about the situation, the current boyfriend sings this song to tell her ex to back off and also to reassure himself that he is the one his girlfriend wants to be with.

Everyone here seems to be focusing on the chorus and/or the end of the song, probably because the beginning of the song is ambiguous.

"Cold winter on the shore chills the dress she wore
It's on the floor
Still it feels so warm today"

"It's on the floor" could be referring to the times that they make love. It's cold outside, her dress is on the floor because they've been having sex. But the dress still feels warm because he is the one dating her, he is the one that will be closest to her. He will be able to see and touch her both in and out of the dress. If this was sung by the ex boyfriend the "dress" would not still feel "warm today".

The guy is also being protective and is pretty annoyed at her ex boyfriend for bugging her and trying to seperate the two of them:

"And that's why I'm wondering why
You had to tell me what's going on in your head
What's wrong
Come around to another time when you don't have to run"

For me, the meaning is revealed in the last verse:

"Swing into flight
Over hills, over her hills it's twilight
Yeah, I guess that's right now"

If the narrator was an ex boyfriend then this last verse would not be as sweet and pleasant as this. For this reason, the narrator is definitely the current boyfriend!

I had (and sometimes still have) issues with my boyfriend's ex. She has sometimes tried to wind me up by saying certain things to him which would really grate on my nerves. But I know deep down that he loves me and would never go back to her, he wants me and would not jeopardise that for anything or anyone. When I first heard this song, I automatically related it to my situation. And I do think it makes a lot of sense.

Iron & Wine – Flightless Bird, American Mouth Lyrics 15 years ago
I knew nothing about Iron & Wine before seeing Twilight. I actually agree that the lyrics do not have much relation to the scene in the movie. I think it was chosen for certain references in the lyrics which could be construed in such a way that would fit the scene. Personally, I think all music is up for interpretation, even when the artist has explicitly given an explanation to his or her lyrics. Music is supposed to soothe us and if some people find it comforting to believe it was as if the lyrics were designed for the film then so be it. I think most artists deliberately disclose any information about what lyrics mean, makeing it more appealing to the listeners and it gives the listener a chance to fit the song around their own personal situation.
I think this song was used in the film because of it's melodic value, the melody sets the tone of that scene before even getting a chance to analyse the lyrics. All in all, Twilight, amazing movie. And Flightless Bird, American Mouth, amazing song.

Gunner-chica. They are a breath of fresh air! When I heard We Cry and The Man Who Can't Be Moved, I thought catchy songs, I'll give the album a go. I was just blown away when I heard the other tracks on the album. This band for me are like old school Coldplay, with not so 'lullaby, put me to sleep' songs! This band have the most AMAZING lyrics, and they're Irish which is always a plus with me!

I agree with you vintage, THE best lyrics in this song are:
"Let’s take it back to the night we kissed
It was Dublin city on a Friday night
You were vodkas and coke, I was guinness all night"

That for me explains how we look back on either current or past relationships, on the day(s) we first met. Those lines are completely wistful! I both love and hate that feeling at the same time!

I don't know when this band is going to get old for me, my iPod shows that I've listened to some tracks at least 100 times! I can't say anymore really!

The Cure – Disintegration Lyrics 16 years ago
I have always loved this song and it's a track that has had a lot of plays by me. It is so genius! When I first bought the Disintergration album (and by far, it's probably my most favourite) I couldn't get enough of it. There's something dark, broody and apathetic about this album. I don't think one should write it off as a love song, two people breaking up from a romantic relationship. I can totally relate to this song. Basically, one of my friends cheated with my now ex boyfriend and is now married with a kid. This does bother me of course, but it isn't what annoys me the most. My best friend at the time sided with them and I felt completely betrayed by her, and all my other friends followed suit and sided with them. Her loyalties should have lied with me. Anyway, I moved on. And then last christmas we decided to meet up again and let bygones be bygones. But she hasn't changed, her two-faced ways are still there, I had to let it go.

She always said that we would be friends together forever:
"But I never said I would stay to the end."

But I had a sense of realism. I knew we wouldn't. When we met up at Christmas I knew we wouldn't be more than acquaintances.

All my friends just vanished like 'poof', no one seemed to care. The majority sided with them and no one wanted to be seen preferring the outcast even though I was heartbroken, they left me emotionally destitute:
"Now that I know that I'm breaking to pieces, I'll pull out my heart and I'll feed it to anyone, Crying for sympathy crocodiles cry for the love of the crowd, And the three cheers from everyone."

There was a lot of 'crocodiles crying', those who were two faced, sycophants who empathised with me at the time but as soon as my back was turned it was 'love of the crowd'.

Disintergration is about acknowledging that nothing will change, when there is nothing left to salvage, the brave thing that should be done is resign. The song is about resignation!

"Stains on the carpet and stains on the scenery,
Songs about happiness murmured in dreams,
When we both of us knew how the ending would be..."

Too much has gone on in the relationship/friendship, and it cannot be repaired.

"I leave you with photographs pictures of trickery, Stains on the carpet and stains on the memory, Songs about happiness murmured in dreams, When we both of us knew how the end always is..."

I have left my friend with all the photos of us smiling and having fun together, stained on her memory. Not on mine, it was all a facade in hindsight. I was a damn good friend, genuine, honest, relaiable, fun, not a sycophant. The song is basically saying: I leave this with you, I do not need it anymore, these memories. And we can be left to our own lives and wonder about each other once in awhile. And that's all we will ever be.

(I didn't mean to use this as a pity forum, lolz)!

Futures is a lot more deeper, darker. And Stay On My Side Tonight is the same as Futures but a little more sinister. Chase This Light from what I've heard so far is just as good as other albums, J.E.W are trying to progress their sound, experiment. This album seems a little more poppy... poppy may be the wrong word. More chirpy, more upbeat. It's not worse, it's just different. Take a bit more time to listen to the album the whole way through, a few more times and I'm sure you'll be able to appreciate it for what this is.

Someone who you overlooked as unimportant and insignificant. Then realising after sometime that you made a terrible mistake. Seeing them again and wishing them to forgive you. This doesn't normally happen to me, but with the off chance it has. Even if people haven't experienced this kind of emotion before, people should learn for it! Appreciate what you have when it's infront of you. Do not let it pass ou by. And FFS, if you get a second chance DO NOT F**K that up!
This song is genius. Those who slate Coldplay are definately ignorant and have probably only listened to their single releases rather than their whole album. This song is a hidden gem! Magical!

Jimmy Eat World – The World You Love Lyrics 17 years ago
Really Lovely (on page 1), I totally agree with you.
Whenever I listen to this song it gives me hope. It's bright and optimistic. It is also very nostalgic. I interpret it as he's reminiscing about the good times, he finds comfort in memories. He floats in and out between the past and present time. He realises he 'wants out'. He wants to go back.
Those of you who have finished at secondary school (or high school to you Americans), it is most probable that you will become distant to even your closest of friends. You may still stay friends but it won't be the same again, you won't view things with such naivete and innocence.
'I'm in love with the ordinary, I need a simple space to rest my head.' - He has a fondness for when things were sweet and simple, where there were no complications that adult life has to offer. He feels happier when he's reliving things in his mind.
'You should see the canals are freezing. You should see me high. You should just be here. Be with me here. It doesnt seem theres hope for me. I let you down. But I wont give in now, not for any amount.' - One never steps in the same river twice. By the metaphor, freezing the canal, the ice IS the same water. The water (or ice) is stand still, it's not flowing anywhere. It's as if he wants to freeze time, the time in his memory. He wishes that it could be like the old times, and they could all be together again. The time when promises were made to be kept. Reality is, you can't rely on anyone, that's what wisdom, life, brings to you as you grow older. He wishes it to be like how it was when they were younger, when promises were infinite and to be kept.
This song really is a mixture of being content and feeling lost. It's amazing how JEW can combine both tones in one ultimately brilliant song.

This song is my favourite one, I don't know why it hasn't been a release. Everything that you have put into a relationship and has been taken for granted you want it all back. Shame it doesn't work out that way.

The Cure – This Is a Lie Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is so potent, it's unbelievable.
I've been reading Erich Fromm's The Art of Loving which corresponds with this song. People seem to be searching for the one, their soulmate. But by doing this we miss out on loving one another. It's like a dual seperateness, two people against the world. People believe that this is the way that God or whatever higher being, intended it to be, but why should this be so? There is no justification as to why two people should be as one against the world. It isn't right that we should ignore everyone else in the world for the sake of one person. That isn't love!
I would suggest reading that section in The Art of Loving.

What idoubtthat said. It's a sordid song really. He's getting his wicked way with the other person, this song isn't about emotion at all. Simply, "I am horny, you're there, let's shutup and get it on."
