i think this is about a girl who feels out of place in her own religion.
"what would i do to believe?" makes it seem like she really wants to be a part of it all, thinking it would help her make sense of her life. she thinks that even her singing in the church choir would improve. she imagines being back in biblical times with "just sun and bread," living a simple life. she wants a piece of religion, but she can't figure out how. that's my take on it, anyway. |

I'd like to think (and this may be way off) that this song is a sort of response to Edith Piaf's song Mon Legionnaire. Her song is about a woman who has a one night stand with a legionnaire who then leaves for war before she tells him how much she loves him, and then dies in the desert. This seems like the legionnaire's thoughts and emotions and how they parallel those of the woman he left behind. And, of course, Mon Legionnaire is a French song, which covers the French bits. |

the title of this song always makes me smile. you know, since florida is supposed to eventually be underwater as a result of global warming. i think it's about a couple in florida, and there's a person outside of florida who loves the girl, but the couple and their past and everything in their life will be destroyed when florida "sinks". as they're drowning they realize everything that's wrong with the world and their lives, and it makes it a little better. that's just what i think, though, and it's probably completely wrong. haha |

yams being the king of crops comes up a lot in the book things fall apart by chinua achebe, but since that book is about african tribes and the invasion of white men and western culture, i don't see any other similarities. so this is a pretty useless comment. eh maybe there's some blatant thing i'm missing that connects the two. |
