yeah, this song is pretty obvious especially to those who've devoted themselves to their partner and gave their heart and dreams to them, and, in turn, had it thrown back in their face. "You said you love me and that's a fact Then you left me, said you felt trapped" And then he wonders "Did you lie when you spoke to me?" -he wants to know if all the "i love you's" from her were lies... great song! It definitely captures the emotions one feels when he is heartbroken and left, possible for someone else. Believe me... |

My personal interpretation is that this song is about an ex lover and a very dysfunctional relationship. Obviously about something heartbreaking that ruined the relationship and how she is dead literally, or "dead" to him metaphorically. When he says: "Collected my belongings and I left the jail Well, thanks for the time, I needed to think a spell I had to think a while" The "jail" he is referring to is the dysfunctional relationship. And when he says: "And maybe we’ll get lucky and we’ll both live again Well, I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know Don’t think so Well, that is that and this is this You tell me what you want and I’ll tell you what you get You get away from me" I took it to meaning that he maybe they'll get back together and "live again" but he's heartbroken and bitter towards her so he wants her to "get away" "Will you tell me what you saw and I’ll tell you what you missed" He's trying to say that she missed out on who or what she though isaac really was or where the relationship was headed. And that's why at the end of the song he confesses: "The more we move ahead the more we’re stuck in rewind Well, I don’t mind, I don’t mind, how the hell could I mind?" He's saying that he's trying to get over her and "move ahead" but he keeps remembering everything about her and the time, and because he's still in love with her, he "doesn't mind" being "stuck in rewind" |

i agree with alex_0203 . "i watched madonna say herself that this song is about her feeling like having the whole world on her shoulders and her coming to terms with her responsibility as an individual. that's exactly what she said." That's exactly how she put it in an interview, when asked about the song meaning. Granted, that's what the entire song as a whole means, i would also like to know (as someone posted above) what all of the double entendre's mean, individually. |

| I love this song. It's one of my favorites. The video explains everything. The title "Drowned World" comes from a book that she uses to symbolize her new view on life.
