The Presets – This Boys In Love Lyrics
|
Okay, though Julian & Kim aren't gay, they have a big gay following and built their career playing in dance-oriented gay clubs. That alone doesn't make this a gay love song, but the lyrics definitely allow that interpretation. The lines, "Don't tell the world what we've known / We've come so far but there's still a way to go" STRONGLY imply that this is a forbidden love, one that must be hidden from the general public because it would be frowned upon. The image of the city lights is prominent in the chorus, and I believe it represents society/rules/judgment. He's in love, but under city lights, i.e. the man-made societal constructs that create discrimination (in this case, homophobia). When he sings, "Drown all the fears that we had / These are the things that we'll never understand," he's saying that even though their romantic/sexual attraction is confounding, (why are some guys in love with other guys instead of girls?) it's simply one of those inexplicable things and there's no need to be afraid or ashamed. Instead of questioning it, he's embracing it.
There's a bit of anger in this song as well, and a lot of defiance. The line "This time fight fire with fire / 'Cuz baby tonight the world belongs to you and I" suggests that the two protagonists aren't going to take their discrimination passively; they're going to rebel, proclaim their love, and escape from that which confines them, the world (and indeed all civilization in it) be damned.
In conclusion, I don't think this is simply a gay love song. It has strong suggestions of homosexuality, but ultimately it's a relatable message to anyone gay or straight: if people won't accept our love, fuck 'em, let's blow this joint. |

Bad Books – The Easy Mark & the Old Maid Lyrics
| 13 years ago
|
I believe the last two lines are long. It should be "Well, rethread your needle / For your sake, I'll play along."
I believe this is a song mourning the random, chaotic nature of the world. There's the metaphor of "the easy mark & the old maid" discussed throughout; to me it generates an image of an old lady who isn't particularly good at sewing/needling, but the point is easy enough so she can still complete the task. The line "The coin-flip faith of the optimist / It's beginner's luck in a sewing kit" is connecting the main theme to the metaphor I just discussed. Essentially, the message appears to be that life is erratic and indifferent, and that faith in an ordered universe where one achieves everything they want to is basically fooling one's self into naive optimism. The speaker notices this about whoever he's addressing in this song ("I asked for the future, she only sang me a song"), but doesn't wish to burden that person with the realistic but painful knowledge he's discovered. He expresses this heavy skepticism about order (and consequently, God - "Others wait for that high sign / Some holy hoax in the tree-line") but he also admits that as a human being, he is capable of fallacy ("What if I'm wrong?") and also realizes that his realistic point of view is considered "hopeless and wrong" to the person he's addressing, so he decides to "play along" so as to keep him/her happy. Basically, ignorance is bliss and he's going to maintain the current state of affairs.
Man, this song is depressing. But honestly, that's *exactly* how I feel about the world. I wish I could fool myself into believing in an ordered, structured universe where everything is planned out and someone or something is watching out for all of us... but I truly feel that the universe is completely indifferent to my existence. |

Here We Go Magic – Tunnelvision Lyrics
|
I hate to be that guy, but I believe this song is about (at least in part) psychedelic drugs. Psychedelics can radically alter your vision, or give you an odd perspective, or warp/curve your vision like a tunnel. "Strange decision" might be referring to the decision to take whatever it was the speaker took. I'd definitely say that's a fitting phrase - I remember when I tried shrooms, I felt very strange the entire time, and wondered why I decided to take them. Looking back on it, I can't say it was a particularly good or bad experience; it was just strange. "You know you want it all:" psychedelics can open your mind to ideas and truths (and a vast amount of sensory information) that seem completely beyond human cognitive abilities. It can be like finding the key to the secrets of the universe ("anything is possible").
The overall ambient/psychedelic feel of the song supports this reading. The lyrics, too, seem to be a bit scattered and meandering, not unlike the thoughts of someone tripping. |

Miike Snow – Song for No One Lyrics
|
I've always just thought of this song as portraying the human will - when things go bad, and we lose that which we love, we have the ability to keep going and try and move past it.
I think the singer is dedicating this song to his love in order to "carry on;" through artwork and expression, he finds solace and rejuvenation.
Oh, and this is easily my favorite Miike Snow song. So damn good.

MGMT – Congratulations Lyrics

|
I get what this song - and this album in general - is trying to say, but what I don't understand is that if MGMT doesn't enjoy all this fame and success, why did they sign to such a mainstream record label and get played all over the radio? I'm all for being anti-mainstream because what corporations have done to music is shameful, but didn't MGMT ask for it? |

Loquat – Swingset Chain Lyrics

Dude.
I graduated from high school this June, and tomorrow I'm moving 3 hours away from the place I've lived my whole life to go to college. Today my best friend moved, yesterday another did, a week ago another did, a month ago another, etc. I'm going to miss my friends so much that, in the midst of other graduates screaming exclamations of excitement about college, I couldn't care less.
I'm freaking out that we're running out of time. |

Jordin Sparks – Battlefield Lyrics

Complete, utter, outright fucking ripoff of "Love is a Battlefield" by Pat Benatar.
Not only is Jordin a whiny bitch (all of her songs are melodramatic), but now she's a plagiaristic, unoriginal douche.
Pretty catchy though. :) (If it weren't thievery) |

Ben Folds – Still Fighting It Lyrics

I think "I am a bird" is a metaphor likening his human family to one of birds. That creates the image of a young bird (his son) leaving the nest when he's old enough. That ties into the whole "it sucks to grow up" theme. |

The Hush Sound – Echo Lyrics
|
Elizabell887 said, "and the end (echo part) is about how everyone has similar problems and she isnt the only one, her telling her story is just an echo of everyone elses journey in life"
I agree completely; I love this song because as a teenager, I see all my friends constantly complaining about their lives, and I always have thought that we're all leading similar lives, we all have sorrows and we shouldn't think our problems are different/worse than others.
It's also interesting to note that after Greta sings, Bob repeats the last two stanzas. If you're following the "we're all connected, we all have the same problems" reading of this song, form follows function in that the change of the singer adds to the meaning of the lyrics - in essence, we can all sing the last two stanzas. |

The Hush Sound – A Dark Congregation Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
The lines
"We are surrounded
By all of the quiet
Sleepers inside the quiet earth"
reminds of me Thanatopsis, a poem in which the speaker speaks of all the dead being part of the earth, lying underneath it.
The line "we will not let time erase us" basically defines the meaning: she doesn't want to be another corpse to be forgotten amidst the others. |

Drop Dead, Gorgeous – It's Pretty Hard To Beat The King Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
The song's about him leaving the town, the first line "Go tell this town I've built them all their coffins" is basically saying "Don't get too comfortable; I'm leaving but staying closeby to kill."
I also think "I own the night life" is about people being afraid to go out cuz of him, as others mentioned.
The line "As for this face, best it be forgotten", to me, means he wants to lay low so as not to get caught. He doesn't want to appear as a suspect so he's leaving town but still committing murders. |

Drop Dead, Gorgeous – Drawing the Devil Lyrics

I was going to say something similar to the poster above me, though I had not thought of the cutting herself/daggers part of it, that may very well be accurate as "In Vogue" displayed 'emo' lyrics involving suicide and the like. I'm pretty sure, though, we can say that her father locked her up in the cellar, the killer released her "Give me your hand, spare your life", when sung, sounds real, not sarcastic or devious, so I think the killer originally was going to save her, but something (involving marriage) caused him to change his mind and hang her. |

Drop Dead, Gorgeous – They'll Never Get Me (Word With You) Lyrics

In regards to my previous comment, upon further examination of the lyrics, after "The King" he does still exhibit trace moments of regret or begging for help. However, in the very end where it counts he goes down (or whatever happens) believing he's still the dark angel. |

CF Riot mentioned that it seems as if he didn't mean to kill all these women, but then later in "It's Pretty hard to beat the king" he seems to have done it for fame or something. I personally think it started off as a loss of control, then he began to feel scared/bad about it (this song) and then later came to be smug about it and accept it. I don't think anyone could kill 7 people and still doubt themselves. By that point he fits his killer persona. I just looked at the lyrics for every song PAST "It's pretty hard to beat the king" and there are no flickers of regret or remorse. |

Drop Dead, Gorgeous – It Sounded Like An Accident Lyrics

I also think "soaked in blood, only to be sterilized" just means the water cleaned her up. The report says no evidence was found on her body as it had been in the water too long. The lyrics don't reference how both of her arms were cut off, which is odd because I imagine it would be fun to write some witty lyrics in regards to that. She knows some sort of secret he doesn't want out, obviously. |

Drop Dead, Gorgeous – The Pleasure To End All Pleasures Lyrics

Sever lyricist and eizoh, you both have interesting theories, both of which could be right. The only real facts we can go off of is that the killer has her key, which implies they did indeed date or something, and a jealous murder of her current lover makes sense. The message also being for her before she died, in regards to the murder of her boyfriend/whatever fits. The message was received at 12:12 AM, her estimated time of death was 12:30 AM. |

I wish Aaron was the singer, or Michael Harris, or whoever did the vocals in the middle of this track. Honestly, Danny's voice just doesn't do it for me. He's only good at screaming, or his girly whisper (I want to master life and death, for example.) |

Drawing the devil has a good amount of screaming (for this album.) Indeed, The Spoon, there is some screaming, but compare it to In Vogue (in quantity, AND intensity) and it's like, 25% of what was on there. |

Bring Me the Horizon – Who Wants Flowers When You're Dead? Nobody Lyrics

I typed up a huge analysis of this song only to have it fucking erased when songmeanings.net said "this page was unavailable." Sure as hell not typing that up again.
However, To cherryxsunset, I believe that "vacant canvas" is a positive statement about life (Paint what you want, do what you want... living life, creating it.. etc)
the grass and staring refers to.. watching the sunset, enjoying the simple things of life. These images are contrasted with the disturbing ones (Rotting trees, corpse-filled sidewalks) to show how life is utterly tragic and you die and it becomes pointless. (From BMTH's point of view, anyway.) |

Best FATA song hands down. So nice to have screaming all the way through. Guitar's awesome too.. yeah it's mourning over the death of a loved one. I love the sense of chaos/turmoil in the chorus/opening.
