first of all, elliott smith is one of the most amazing singer/songwriters ever, period. He (in my opinion) was THE best to emerge out of the late 90's. who was better, really? he was brilliant and almost every single song he has made connects with me on some level. i just felt i had to say that. as for this song, this song is genius. i just found out this was originally a cat stevens song after being in love with Elliott's version for so long. I almost like this one better (because it's the original and all due credit should be paid to the original composer). BUT i can't lie, Elliott hits this home just a little more that cat. this isn't the first time he's gave a genius artist a run for their money on THEIR song either. See Jealous Guy by Elliott, it's better than John Lennon's. Seriously. |

makeartnotmath and carmenadrift are dead on. this seems extremely apparrent to me.. but thats just me.. as well as markartnotmath and acrmenadrift.. hah and yes, its very true that everyones interpretations stem from their own emotions and psyche. but thats what makes this little website fun, right? he's actually talking to himself in this song. the self that he knows is there and is true, but which is also the same self everyone wants to fix. 'you wont do what the doctor ordered you wont see someone else' he cant see himself any other way. he cant look at himself and his life without a horrible feeling of unworthiness/emptiness. 'come on back to me, my bright tomorrow' he wants to be back to a time/place when the future looked less dark 'in a corridor where you find yourself not blocked by the doors you locked.' (correction there btw) - he cant shut people out of his life as easy as he thinks. 'wishing i was someone else when i see you by yourself' - an introspective thought or idea of what it would be like to be 'normal' (someone else). this only gets imagined when he sees/realizes/feels how much he has disconnected himself from everyone. 'you say you feel hollow, and you know its cause you are' - obvious feelings of emptiness. by him saying/thinking them it makes the feelings more true and real. 'i think of you with hesitation, i think of you too hard' - at first hesitation then over analysis of him fitting in and being happy with people. 'come on back to me, but dont make me sorry' - he wants the good/positive/happy self back. but only if it doesn't let him down. i dont know i could be far off here. but this is me. thats why i feel like i get it. |

"i'll be waiting still impatient with my dead imagination while you're with some other man" - absolutely stunningly gorgeous. totally agree this is about being in love with a prostitute. i also get that feeling like the characters really come alive in this song. everytime i hear it i get such vivid images happening. some of the lyrics are so abstract i wish i could deciefer them. ie. "gunna go down in the water, fill my mouth of full of sand" - sick of hearing his words? tired of speaking/trying? duno. |
