I literally cannot express how much fucking hatred I have for the lowest common denominator songmeanings.net user that thinks that their favorite Radiohead song is ~REALLY~ about how liberals have have tainted AMERICA'S national pride or whatever on-its-face unashamedly retarded jerk-off fantasy they want. The meaning and literal text of contemporary music is not up for grabs by the first fuckhead moron that calls it, and stupid, baseless, and incoherent interpretations based on Jimmy-Bob Inbred Fucktard's personal opinion are not acceptable contributions.

I am so drunk and angry right now.

The Decemberists – Calamity Song Lyrics 12 years ago
"When I was writing 'Calamity Song,' Sarah Palin was talking about how everybody was going to move to Alaska when the end times come." — Colin Meloy, Decemberists frontman

Apparently this song was inspired by one of the crazy ramblings Sarah Palin graced us with during the 2008 presidential campaign. While there are a few references to the the then-upcoming election, the lyrics mostly have fun with the concept of the "end times," as eagerly awaited by Christian fundamentalists like Sarah Palin.

Colin Meloy is, of course, a firmly left-wing progressive (anti-war, gay rights, healthcare reform, etc.) Naturally, he supported and campaigned for Democratic candidate Barack Obama in 2008.

Some explanations and elucidations:

"California succumbed to the fault line" = The natural disasters of the "end times" evidently include massive earthquakes along the San Andreas fault in California.

"And the Andalusian tribes / Setting the lay of Nebraska alight" = "Andalusian" refers to southern Spain, usually in reference to the Vandals, a barbarian tribe that once occupied that region. In the context of the song, the "Andalusian tribes" are likely roving gangs of desperate and violent savages, roaming, burning, and pillaging across the wasteland in the aftermath of the apocalypse.

"Hetty Green" = An early 20th-century businesswoman known for her greed and stinginess
"Hetty Green / Queen of supply-side bonhomie bone-drab / You know what I mean" = Sarah Palin (Queen of pro-rich [supply-side economics] folksy [bonhomie] bone-grey dullness [bone-drab])

"And the Panamanian child" = John McCain (Born at a US Army base in Panama)

"Stands at the Dowager Empress's side" = Cindy McCain (Always wears heavy make-up and elaborate clothing, like a Dowager Empress.

The real question here is who's the more reprehensible idiot, the guy who's like:

"HURRRRR IF YOU THINK 'BOUT IT THESE WORDS MATCH JERKING MY DICK OFF!!!!!!!"

Or the guy who replies like:

THANKS FOR TEACHING ME THIS OBJECTIVE FACT!!! I WILL NOW TELL ALL MY FELLOW IDIOT FRIENDS ABOUT THIS WACKY 'FACT' THAT THIS SONG IS ABOUT JERKING YOUR DICK OFF!!!!!"

Oh jesus fucking christ, EVERYONE on SongMeanings thinks literally EVERY single song ever written is about doing drugs and the literal physical act of sex/masturbation.

So the lyrics mention "tightening up" and "being yours tonight" and, based ENTIRELY on that, you are automatically CERTAIN the song is about JERKING YOURSELF OFF.

That says A LOT more about YOU than it says about the MEANING of the fucking song.

You can literally tie ANY phrase or sentence to sex or drugs if you are stupid enough to make stupid assumptions without realizing you're doing so.

If you think this song is EXCLUSIVELY about MASTURBATION you are a STRAIGHT-UP MORON who knows NOTHING about art, music, literature, or even CRITICAL THINKING of ANY KIND WHATSOEVER and should probably keep your opinion to yourself, because, jesus christ, you are DUMB as HELL.

You can certainly interpret it that way, but I almost think its a love/hate kind of thing. He talks about "its sweet and bitter taste," and the tone and language he uses sounds to me like he sees its flaws as endearing. Havn't you ever had love or affection for something in spite of all it's flaws?

"Frigidaire" has an obvious explanation, "frigid air." He's hoping for a cool breeze. That being said, I'm sure the Decemberists also intended it as a punning reference to the "frigidaire," but the speaker of the song in the African desert is simply talking about a "frigid air."

I mostly agree except for your first comment about Andy Warhol and enjoying your own boredom, obviously what the speaker is feeling in this song is a good thing nor is he "enjoying it."

Also, since Andy Warhol was a hyper-capitalist who fetishized mass-production he's almost the complete opposite of Thom Yorke, who sees mass-production, consumerism and our alienating capitalist society as life-draining afflictions that stomp out love, emotion and the human spirit. Like he does in this very song.

Radiohead – Let Down Lyrics 14 years ago
"Don't get sentimental."

I love how Yorke's lyrics take simple phrases we hear everyday and make you think about what they're really saying. How many times have we heard people say "don't get sentimental," or "I don't want to get sentimental," and don't ever really think about it?

Why shouldn't we be sentimental about important things in our lives? We're so pressured by our alienated modern society to be completely emotionless, to just do what we're "supposed" to do and serve our purpose as a wheel turning in the global system of production. Our loves, thoughts and desires as human beings take a backseat to being "productive" (helping make stupid plastic shit no one needs).

This is your life. Be sentimental.

Radiohead – Subterranean Homesick Alien Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't even understand how you can appreciate this song if you think this its just about "a guy who believes in aliens."

The aliens are just a metaphor, he's imagining how silly our perfunctory, dull uninspired society would be to enlightened aliens looking down. Everyone lives their lives doing what they're "supposed" to do, "locking up their spirits," and hiding their true thoughts and desires, living "for their secrets."

Finally, if he told people around him what he and these hypothetical "enlightened aliens" knew, the meaning of life, that people should be living the moment, be open with eachother and pursuing their passions; they would think he was a complete weirdo.

Obviously you've never thought about the meaning of life or anything serious, so you're probably one of the "weird creatures who lock up their spirits" that the song is talking about.

Radiohead – Subterranean Homesick Alien Lyrics 14 years ago
A masterpiece, these lyrics send shivers down my spine.

It's about feeling completely different from the people around you, feeling like everyone in society goes about everyday doing what they're "supposed" to do, never pursuing or at least never revealing their desires or talking about life. They "lock up their spirits" and "live for their secrets."

The speaker feels completely isolated an like he's the only one who "gets it," feeling alone. He thinks about how silly human society would appear to enlightened aliens looking down on us. He has a wish that someday he's taken by these enlightened aliens into a beautiful ship, who tell him the "meaning of life," revealing everything, the perfect opposite of the lifeless people around him living oppressively uninspired lives.

Finally, he says that even if he did break the mold and told everyone around him how he was feeling, that everyone locks up their spirit and desires, that people should stop going thoughtlessly through live thinking and doing what they're "supposed to," and just live life and be open with eachother; all the people would think was a lunatic.

LCD Soundsystem – Pow Pow Lyrics 14 years ago
Haha yeah, I like that line. LCD Soundsystem is more popular in the UK and Europe than he is in the US, so I like it when James Murphy reps for the states, as in this song and in "North American Scum," where he reminds his European fans that "for those of you who still think [LCD Soundsystem is] from England... we're not," and that they are, in fact, "North American scum."

Obviously neither song is actually meant as a serious diss to Europeans, it's just a bit of playful trans-atlantic banter.

I think it's about them having relationship problems and the guys thinking it's completely over, just trying to "get over it":

"I filled the bucket, I spilled the bucket out on the floor, a mistake for sure
Consequences turned me hostile, I got so saddened, made me docile"

But then he feels like there's another chance, thinking that the relationship can still be salvaged:

"Then you applauded when I was loving, made me feel weakened, I stopped recovering.
Now I feel silly, selfish and dizzy, but I got this feeling that you'll forgive me"

The rest of the song is basically about how there's "highs" and "lows" but their love always "replenishes." That's just my interpretation though.

It's about an American girl losing the appetite to eat meat because she feels so sick about the War in Iraq. Interview from the band:

http://www.nme.com/blog/index.php?blog=125&p=7814&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

"The lyrics refer to a member of my family who gave up eating meat when we invaded Iraq. They were horrified by what was happening internationally and they lost their taste for meat. It wasn’t even necessarily an overt protest, it was a physical reaction."

In another interview: "you don't have to understand her reaction, I don't either, but it should how people can react and express their political engagement differently"

You're right that it's the middle-east, but just to nitpick, the AK-47 isn't a "modern middle-eastern weapon", it was a standard issue rifle of the Soviet Union. Most terrorists and guerillas use AK-47s now because there are so many of them and they're relatively easy to get.

The Decemberists – Red Right Ankle Lyrics 14 years ago
This is a love song and it's absolutely not sad at all.

The first verse is a flippant and whimsical story about the girl recieving her red right ankle, the ankle asking her to accept it because "we are bound by symmetry, and we together make a limb." Obviously a metaphor for love.

The second verse is a similarly whimsical story about the girl being sweet with regard to the memory of her late gypsy uncle. There's some symbolism here but no "secret meaning"

The third verse is about the various relationships, good and bad, the girl has had up to this point.

I HATE HATE HATE it when peoplen on this website post some retarded weird rambbling explanation for what a song "REALLY MEANS." Not every fucking song is secretly about drugs/death/sex, some of them actually mean more or less what they mean

Haha I think the line "drunk boys, we walk like pedestrians" is talking about how when guys are drunk and have their mind set on something they do like a ridiculous "serious walk" across the room thats kind of like a fast walk you would do on a street

"Drunk girls are boringly wild"
^ This is so true. pretty self explanatory but drunk girls are always predictably saying "oh my god! i love to party! i'm so drunk!" but never actually do anything exciting

It's "frigid air," not "frigidaire." The song is about a French legionnaire in Africa long before refridgerators were invented. I'm sure they were aware of the word "frigidaire" when they wrote the song, but I think it's meant as a pun.
