| i am hardly a christian person myself.i haven't been to a church for a service ever since i've been able to decicde whether to go or whether to not. So i didn't see any refrence to God in this song, though i was aware Sufjan was religious, and did write most of his songs for God, The Bible etc. All i heard was about someone wanting to make things better in the world or in his life for someone he cared greatly about "If I am alive this time next year". If he will live long enough to carry out wihatever he an do to make that other person happy. As if they're gone away and he is making himself better for when they return. That can very well be translated into a religious meaning. But that is whats so brilliant about Sufjan. The only reason his "christian music" (if you will) is bearable is because it can be related to by anyone, be them religious or not. It connects to different people on different levels, which to me is the true mark of an artistic geinus. | |

yeah. i think it has something relating to the goddess Isis. i believe Osiris was locked in a coffin made just for him by his envious brother, Set, and Set put his body in a river (nile?) when Set found his casket washed ashore, he then cut him into 14 pieces? and Set hid the pieces of his body in various places in egypt. and Isis, his wife/sister went looking for all of them. and found every piece but one. so maybe its about a girl trying to put a guy back together in some way. im not quite sure but the egyptian mythology is truely fascinating. |

it is a great song. sounds like something you'd play on a road trip. cause some things in it, relate to driving "when i accelerate, i remember why its good to be alive" like the person in it, wasted away the year, or soemthing "bought books and didnt read i thing" like he knows he's wasting his life at what he's doing "walking upright" and gets away. i love the chorus. the way his voice sounds, and everything comes together with the drums. gives me an infinate feeling. truely amazing. |

i dont know why. but when i first listined to this song. it felt like he was going out with, in love with, or liked a girl who was becoming someone very grown up "womens clothes" felt like the responsibilities of getting older. and she was hiding them in her drawer so she didn't have to face the fact she was growing up. so she runs away, and tries to escape time. And ends up commiting suicide in the end. its just what first same to mind. might not be what was exactly in conors mind at that time. any way you see it. its a beautiful song. |

well i dont know if im right or not. but what i got from this song was that. he was trapped. whether it be literally or figuratively. But to me, he was trapped in his head. and all the animals are his thoughts, thoughts like wild animals, hard to hold onto for even a moment. so hes trapped in a place in his head where he's trying to figure out who he is and why he is that way. When he says "living off of grass and the drippings from the ceiling" to me, desribes his outlook on what he looks like on the inside. cracked walls. very morbid, and cruel. "its okay to eat fish cause they don't have any feelings" might be his way of saying that just because something might not hurt, or have an effect doesn't make it right. Just because he sees himself as lost, as something being in the way of whatever it is he wants to avhieve or be, doesnt mean that it doesn't hurt when someone else sees him like that. im not sure if that made any sense, im probably just rambling on now. sorry:) |
