Monkey Swallows The Universe – Bloodline Lyrics 15 years ago
I'll admit it - I'm stumped as to what this one means, but I do have to say that I think this song is the next big thing. It's just an amazing, catchy song.

William Fitzsimmons – Funeral Dress Lyrics 15 years ago
I think Vball is 100% correct on this one.

"dress" does not necessarily mean the dress of a female. It is referring to funeral garb - the formal clothing that one is buried in. (ex. - Military dress blues).

"On a rack in a store for a discount price
But the color’s been changed to a black from white
Though the difference will prob’ly be lost on me
Anyways"

This means you could pick up his clothes from a discount store...maybe Goodwill or something and the clothes could have been dyed black for the occasion. The difference would be lost on him. He doesn't care. He's dead. No need to dress him in Armani.

"And don’t worry if laughter is on your lips
Cause you wouldn’t be you if you changed for this
And I won’t measure love from the tears that drip
From your face"

He's saying, "Really...It's OKAY to laugh!" He's talking to someone he knows well...and this is a song to comfort that person and let them know that it's okay. He doesn't want them walking around like some kind of zombie pillar of grief. He wants them to go on without him and live. He knows how much this person loves him...and he's not going to judge them by how much they grieve over him. He already knows.

"I suppose i should hope that it turns out fine
But I hope that some sadness does cross your mind
And you’ll look for me when you have crossed that line
Come one day"

While he just told this loved one not to grieve too much...He is also hoping they don't forget about him, completely, and hopes when their time comes, they remember to look for at wherever that place is the soul goes when we die.

"I can't wait for you"

Now here is the really interesting line...Because this one can be interpreted in SO many different ways.

1. "In a sick way, I can't wait until you die, too, so I can see you again..."
2. "I can't stay behind - I wish I could wait, but I can't. I have to go...I can't wait for you."

I like to think that maybe it's meant to be this kind of double entendre.

In any case, it's a brilliant song. Comforting, reflective, but still bright and catchy. One of my favorites.

Vienna Teng – Recessional Lyrics 15 years ago
Okay, I just read up on it and my analysis is totally wrong...I think, but still, it's what I'm always going to think of when I hear it. That's what's cool about songs - everyone has their own interpretation. :-)

Vienna Teng – Recessional Lyrics 15 years ago
I've really been thinking about this one...and I think it's about falling in love with someone else's child. Bear with me. It also makes perfect sense with what someone said about how Vienna called it a "love story in reverse". You're supposed to find the right man, first...and then worry about children. I think the main character of the song found herself falling in love with a child first when she thought it was the last thing she wanted. The child wins her over.

"And I never thought I would find her here: flannel and satin" - flannel and satin are common material of children's clothes and blankets. Children are also struck by beauty and seem to see right through people to their character in uncanny ways sometimes. That might fit this verse.

"Oh, I swear I don't want this. There's a reason not to want this but I forgot..." - She didn't think she ever wanted children, but suddenly she finds herself enchanted by this child and can't remember her reasons for not wanting one.

"In the terminal she sleeps on my shoulder, hair falling forward, mouth all askew." - Sounds just the way a child would sleep, but the big clue is the next lines:

"And she dreams through the noise, her weight against me, face pressed into the corduroy grooves.
maybe it means nothing, but I'm afraid to move." - Again, sounds just like a child would sleep and the reaction of the adult holding the child. I've often watched children sleep and have laughed because they can fall asleep in the noisiest places. You hold them and it's the sweetest moment...but you're afraid to move for fear of waking them up. "Dreaming through the noise" is the most beautiful, peaceful, loving way to articulate the moment of holding a sleeping child in your arms in a noisy environment.

After she takes her to the airport and the girl leaves, she feels a huge void and realizes that the girl almost became part of her and now she's not quite sure of who she is anymore in the unbearable loneliness without her: "Who are you?" she repeats several times with other lines about daily activities. I don't know how or why the character of the song came to care for this child...but somehow she became attached and letting go wasn't as easy as she thought.

I just get the feeling this song is more innocent, pure, and beautiful than anyone has imagined.

Dar Williams – As Cool As I Am Lyrics 16 years ago
I relate with this song so much. I only heard a snippet of it and I instantly knew what it was all about because it practically tells the story of a relationship I was in.

I was head over heels for this guy who was perfection to me. Everything about him was beautiful, but the way he treated me. I wasn't ugly...I was modeling, at the time for Christ's sake, but I felt invisible to him every time we went out together because he was always looking at every other woman in the room. He would tell me things like, "I've always loved blondes....I can't help but look at them." I am a blonde. He would make comments about every women under the guise that he just admired female beauty...from an almost artistic perspective, but it was all a lie and I knew it. My self esteem was so low and given my looks then, I shouldn't have been so self-conscious.

This song is an affirmation. What happens in these situations where women have been in relationships like mine is that you become increasingly bitter, jealous, and paranoid. You start hating other women and it drives you crazy whenever another woman is around - a habit that is self-destructive to your entire life. Many women never overcome this problem. They don't know how...but I did. I started realizing that the man was the one with the problem...and that I was also in the shoes of those women I hated for being pretty or attractive to my boyfriend. Somewhere, some poor girl in many instances had been seething in insane jealousy over me when her boyfriend looked at me.

It's a vicious cycle of turning women against women and it's only broken when the woman dating the jerk breaks the cycle and embraces womankind. That doesn't mean becoming a lesbian or a man-hating feminazi...it just means standing up for yourself, realizing your own self-worth, and not blaming other women (who can actually be your allies) for the shortcomings of a man who doesn't realize the harm his wandering eyes and remarks cause...or who does realize and just doesn't care.

It's a brilliant song. Dar is a brilliant, brilliant songwriter. I just heard this song two days ago...and I'm so hooked. This song really touched my heart and brought back the feelings of pain and hurt and the triumph of learning to overcome and be secure in your skin.

Joshua Radin – Amy's Song Lyrics 16 years ago
It sounds to me like he's writing a song about a girlfriend who is trying to take control of him creatively, so he feels. She's telling him to write about things other than the overdone topic of love and heartbreak and he's saying, "Write what you know and this is what I know". He's trying to tell her that love is the subject he knows most and feels he can write about best while she's wanting him to write on topics she deems more profound.

Joshua Radin – Someone Else's Life Lyrics 16 years ago
It is written for Schuyler Fisk. There's a cute video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbtwQ4n3plg where he gives her a sidelong glance and says something about it being for his girlfriend and Schuyler blushes and everyone laughs.

"And right now I’ll be the boy in your next song
I’ll learn the parts and play along
If you’ll let me"

Those lyrics make me smile because Schuyler is a singer/songwriter as well. I really love how smitten he seemed to be with her...and no wonder why, she's a down-to-earth beauty who writes some beautiful music as well.

I would love to know the story about the picture in the shoe too! Is this some kind of good luck thing or something? If I ever meet him in person, I might have to ask...

Joshua Radin – Everything'll Be Alright (Will's Lullaby) Lyrics 16 years ago
There's a few wrong lyrics in there, but close enough...

I did read somewhere that Will is the son of some friends of his and he wrote the song while babysitting him. That just shows what kind of guy Josh is to offer to babysit. :-)

I think the song is about all the turmoil and things spinning through his head...all the worries in his personal life and in the world, but then he tiptoes in to check on Will and realizes that no matter how crazy the world is, that moment looking at a sleeping baby makes you realize there are moments of peace. The baby isn't worrying about all the troubles in life so why should he? Everything's going to be all right.

Josh Woodward – I'll Be Right Behind You Josephine Lyrics 17 years ago
When I hear this song, I picture at first a young woman standing outside the hospital trying to hurry and smoke a cigarette to get back inside where her boyfriend is in critical condition and in a coma. She's not leaving him and he's saying, "Jesus Christ, if you tore my heart out - the only thing I'd feel is less alone." meaning he can't feel a thing in the state he's in, but if he were without his heart and didn't still love "Josephine" so much, he'd feel a lot less lonely laying there in his comatose state. (I am led to believe he's comatose because of "in this sterile room with blinding light and faces pointed down" and "you asked me if I'd pinch you but my fingers wouldn't bend").

He's saying that he'll be right behind her in spirit "even when my soul's an amputee" which means when his soul is detached from his body. Such a brilliant, brilliant line. Josh Woodward is a genius. When he's saying "there's nothing in this world we really own" he's referring to all the material things and people that we can't hold on to and can't take with us...and how heartbreaking that feels looking at the one you love while the wall of life and near-death is separating you. Judging by "I leave behind the rest", I think he dies near the end of the song.

That's just my take on it...it's a brilliantly written gorgeously performed acoustic masterpiece that I can't say enough good things about.

I just heard this song several months ago and it's become one of my all-time favorites already. Josh Woodward is a virtual unknown except in internet circles, right now, but he's easily more talented than most you hear on the radio these days. I'm a lifelong fan, now.

Joshua Radin – Star Mile Lyrics 17 years ago
To me, this song is about a man who reached fame and fortune as a musician. He's reached an epiphany while cruising down the star mile (Hollywood walk of fame) with a girl in the passenger seat next to him whom he can tell is only with him for his fame and fortune...and not who he really is. She's hoping to end up his wife, but he says the "gold dust in her eyes won't reform into a wedding ring". He's thinking of a girl he loved that he left behind when he became famous, knowing it couldn't work. He knows, sadly, that he will never find another woman who will love him for himself that way again and he's reflecting on this with bitter sadness. Hey - he can fill a prescription to kill the pain and at least he's not alone in being ultimately lonely - he's got his famous friends, who all feel the exact same pain he feels living in an exclusive, privileged, fake world that lies at the pinnacle of fame and fortune.

To me, the key line in the whole song is: "life comes to those that'll choose
the regular news
over playing the blues with the light on"

It means that life can be enjoyed most fully in the anonymousness of being able to walk down the street and have no one know your name and to settle for a mediocre life of 9-5's and watching the evening news and that finding someone to love you for YOU is next to impossible in tinsel town.
