| great song, though very sad and depressing. this song can be interpreted many ways, each unique to the listener and that is the greatness of the song. to me, i see a failed relationship with the guy wanting it to continue. he wants to investigate a way to make it work, but he means nothing to her (worthless). the guy is smoking away his depression with his life a wreck (all of the ash trays). ash trays in and of itself is symbolic of the relationship turning to ashes. he has magazines lying all over his house (probably along with many other things) and they all have love stories in them (recurrent love themes). the time zone could be that the girl left town to start a new life. again... this song is beautiful, but a bit on the sad side :/ | |

i think the writer is close friends with some girl that he is in love with, but she doesnt know it. He is stuck in the "friend zone" so to speak. For example: "How Close is Close Enough?" As she talks about her relationships with her "new head filled up with smoke" he listens with his heart in his hands and wants to help her, but he is also in love with her and wants her to love him. In example: "I trip over everything you say" He wants to be in love with her but if he confesses his love things would be different between them. Also, he knows that he will tell her eventually, so he wants to keep her close so that when the moment actually comes he can confess. For example: "I'm gonna make damn sure That you can't ever leave No you won't ever get too far from me" And also the obvious reason: "I just wanna break you down so badly" He wants to bang her, too.
