Amanda Palmer – June Is Busting Out All Over Lyrics
| 15 years ago
|
The last two lines ("But he’s your fella, And you love him/And all the rest is talk ") is from "What's the Use of Wond'rin'?", another song from "Carousel". Amanada wrote this in high school as a protest against the musical. She recorded a great cover of "What's the Use.." for WKAP, which really brings out it's horrible theme of accepting domestic abuse. |

Ani DiFranco – The Atom Lyrics

I believe the it's "pure science of boom", not "pure sides". And I agree, this song is truly beautiful. I had the absolute pleasure of seeing Ani perform this song live, and I almost burst into tears, it was so achingly wonderful. |

Amanda Palmer – Another Year: A Short History of Almost Something Lyrics
| 15 years ago
|
I think this is one of my favorite songs on the album. The lyrics are so purely about being in love with someone and nervous about doing anything and life getting in the way of it all. Given, that's an oversimplified version of the song, but the lines "I want my chest pressed to your chest/My nervous system interfere", is so gorgeously simple. I think it's about waiting to tell someone how you feel about them, and fooling yourself into putting it off by telling yourself you have plenty of time. |

Amanda Palmer – Not Mine Lyrics
|
I agree with the other comments, but I think, on a more literal level, this song could be about having a baby and really just not feeling like it's yours. I think the last verse is really great because of the twist Amanda puts on the fact that sometimes people don't know who the father of a child is, but almost always know who its mother is because she gave birth to it. But Amanda is saying that it doesn't really matter who the father of it is, just that it was something inside her that someone put there (I agree with the above poster) and she knows that its not hers because she feels like it doesn't belong to her. |

I really love this song. I'm pretty sure it's just called "Typical" though. That's how it's listened on the "My Manic and I EP". |

St. Vincent – Marry Me Lyrics

I really love this song. I actually first heard it covered by Amanda Palmer, who I adore. I like the original more, but Amanda's cover is really worth a listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uPtt3lC590. But, sorry WhereisJF?, it's not going to be on her solo album. There's only one cover on it, and, actually, St. Vincent sings on that track with Amanda. If you're interested in the track list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_Killed_Amanda_Palmer |

The Dresden Dolls – Half Jack Lyrics
|
Amanda says it's not about a hermaphrodite.
"Question: Some people have suggested that Half Jack is about a hermaphrodite. If this is true, my life will have no meaning. So what's it really about?
Amanda responds:
take a deep breath. it's not about a hermaphrodite. not exactly. rest assured your life has meaning after all."

Fountains of Wayne – Barbara H. Lyrics
|
I think this song is about when the lead singer (his name escapes me at the moment) and his wife, Barbara, met. Maybe she had a crush on someone else at the time, and that got him really upset because he was in love with her or something. I love the line: "Maybe the world isn't so small/Barbara knows it doesn't matter at all." I think that's saying that the size of the world doesn't matter if you're surrounded by people you love. I don't know, I think it's a good song probably with a good story behind it. |

Liz Phair – Flower Lyrics
|
I think it's an ironic song, like someone else said. Not that girl's can't/don't feel this way, just that the way Liz sings it, it sounds so deadpan that it just seems funny. But I love her breathing in the song, how every line links with the next one. The rhyming is so awesome. Plus, the stream-of-consciousness she puts into it makes it not only hilarious, but actually meaningful. |

Liz Phair – Soap Star Joe Lyrics

"They say he's famous
But no one can prove it"
I love that line. I think it totally sums up plenty of stars we have now, who are famous for being famous. The last line, "check out America" also seems to be referencing this need to be famous and a "hero" for nothing at all. |

Misfits – Who Killed Marilyn? Lyrics
|
S Curry52, that's not right. Miller wrote the screenplay for "The Misfits" while Marilyn was alive as a present to her because he hoped she would star in it for the movie. She did star in it, but she hated the character Miller had written for her because she saw it as an insult, ignoring all of her real characteristics. The screenplay was the straw that broke the camel's back in their marriage and they divorced soon after. |

I do too. I don't really know what it means, except that it seems a little religious to whoever the speaker's praying to or whatever. Whoever it may be about, I think it's a love song. |

that dog. – Annie Lyrics
|
I love this song. I think it's about a girl who's in love with a guy who already has a baby with another girl. "He'll be there holding your baby/And I'll be there holding him still". I think it's either about a real car crash, in which the narrator, the boy, and the other woman were driving and only the other woman died, or about a metaphoric crash about how the guy is driving both these women's lives into the ground.
I can't listen to this song enough! |

that dog. – Ms. Wrong Lyrics

The meaning of this song's pretty clear, it's about a girl who finds herslef with a nice boy who likes her alot, but that she has no interest in. You missed a verse, though. The one that goes: so he said "Can I see you later?" so she thinks "who else can come?" so he said "we should have dinner" so she thinks "it's time that i go home". Or something like that. |

Letters to Cleo – Veda Very Shining Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
I think it's about someone who's unlucky in love and makes a really big deal about it by throwing fits: "Cut it out, get off the floor because it doesn't make you matter more." That seems like the person's internal monologe, realizing their being an attention whore and trying to make themselves stop. I have no idea what Veda Very Shining means, though. |

Jill Sobule – Supermodel Lyrics

|
I think this song is really cute, but also really sad. The girl is hoping that when she becomes famous her entire life will change, even that she will magically have a new dad. I guess it's just an anthem to the kind of person who puts too much expectation in their aspirations. |

Bikini Kill – Alien She Lyrics
|
I think this song is about one woman struggling with two sides of her personality. One side wants to be pretty and "girly" and the other wants to be "feminist, dyke, whore." I love how the song ends though, which I think kind of suggests that you can be pretty and a little girly, while still being a feminist or a dyke, or whatever you want to be. You don't have to conform to the standards society sets for you, you can just be a combination of many different things. |

Ani DiFranco – Sorry I Am Lyrics

I love the line
"i don't know why red fades before blue it just does"
It says how the narrator doesn't know why she is falling out of love and why this whole thing is happening, but it is and she accepts that. |

Veruca Salt – Celebrate You Lyrics

I feel like the first two verses start off about a girl who's not longer with her lover and she goes to a party of his, all dressed up to show him what he's missing. But she misses him too much and she starts cracking up. The last two verses shift to something much darker, and I'm not sure exactly what they're about. |

Transister – Flow Lyrics
|
I feel like this is a song about a girl who has been trying to fight depression for a very long time, but she just decides to succumb to it.
"I dive into the river and flow"
The river being depression.
I love the first verse:
"I'm always swiming against the flow of the tide
Kissing the life into something that's already died"
I think that means that she's always trying to be something other than what everyone else is and she cares about things that have already passed.
I think the second verse is about her and her boyfriend or significant other or whatever, and how he hears joy and passion from the streets, but she hears the awful sounds. He's the optimist and she's the pessimist.
It's a great song. |

The Dresden Dolls – 672 Lyrics

I forgot to add this, but it reminds me of the whole thing started with "The Number 23". No one really knows what the numbers mean, but it's wonderful to have them. 672 is a secret you have to keep because you couldn't explain it to anyone even if you tried. |

The Dresden Dolls – Mrs. O. Lyrics

I think this song is incredibly sarcastic. It seems to mimic the thoughts of the "blissfully" ignorant, like Halocaust deniers. I think the lyrics are making fun of how little people seem to believe the actual truth these days, and think that the world is in fact a wonderful place full of magic and rainbows. |

Spice Girls – Do It Lyrics

Prowler Kid, I think you're totally off. I think the first verse is basically saying what everyone tells kids:
"It's just another keep your eye fixed on the road
Do what your mama said
I will not be told
Keep your moth shut, keep your legs shut
Go back in your place
Blameless, shameless, damsei in disgrace"
And then the next verse is saying fuck that, do whatever you want:
"Who cares what they say
Because the rules are for breaking
(I'll tell ya)
Who made them anyway
You gotta show what you feel
Don't hide" |

Pat Benatar – Hit Me with Your Best Shot Lyrics

I love this song. This lyrics are a little off instead of "Put up your terms, let's get down to it" it's "Put up your dukes, let's get down to it". And it's "You come on with a come on, you don't fight fair" not "You come on with a _compound_, you don't fight fair"
As for the meaning, I always took it as sarcastic. The singer is saying, Come on, hit me again because obviously I'm not good enough for you. Like mocking whoever is abusing her. It's such an awesome song. |
