Arcade Fire – We Used to Wait Lyrics 13 years ago
erm, sorry, am I being attacked here? why is that again?

I never said that it was merely "about how letters are slow". c'mon. I was interpreting a few of the images in the song as a way of getting to what I think are important themes to it - ephemerality, fickleness, melancholy, nostalgia. it's all there. even though we used to wait was one of the only tracks out there when I wrote my comment, those are themes which I still see as recurrent through the whole album.

as for loves2travel's interpretation, I don't see how it invalidates my point. I don't see how mine invalidates his either. to me, they complement each other.

Arcade Fire – We Used to Wait Lyrics 13 years ago
I agree, but to me it doesn't necessarily speak of a relationship between two people as much as it speaks of the way people relate to... pretty much everything.

Arcade Fire – We Used to Wait Lyrics 14 years ago
we don't wait anymore - everything's extremely fast today, communication especially. long-distance contact can be made instantaneously. so everything feels even more ephemeral, or transitory, or fickle. we also don't walk as much in the contemporary busy life format, opting for faster means of transportation than our own legs. fast fast fast. it's only natural that the older generations will look back at those times when you actually had to wait to receive a letter, a physical document, and, in the case of classic lovers, a special piece of paper with the sender's very own handwriting (when not typewritten). there was expectation, and the expectation itself could be a reason to be content to be alive. a big part of the romance is gone.

Joanna Newsom – Baby Birch Lyrics 14 years ago
"It is a common misconception that the injected rabbit would die only if the woman was pregnant. This led to the phrase "the rabbit died" being used as a euphemism for a positive pregnancy test. In fact, all rabbits used for the test died, because they had to be surgically opened in order to examine the ovaries. While it was possible to do this without killing the rabbit, it was generally deemed not worth the trouble and expense."

oh. is that what it is?

following this logic, killing a rabbit would be the same as having a baby. that makes me think that the image of the narrator actually catching a rabbit means either that a. she was desperately holding on to the thought of having a baby or b. she became aware of the fact that she was pregnant. BUT, however, nevertheless, the rabbit apparently never really dies in the song. it runs away. tracing a parallel, the child is never born. it (a. the child or b. the thought of it) eventually goes away.

still the same conclusion: a lost baby. I can't believe I'm still on the same place. I really can't seem to eliminate one of the two recurring interpretations on here...

no, wait. if the rabbit is only her imagination, why would she skin and, well, harm the animal in the first place? she thought of having a baby and then thought of having a pregnancy test? that makes no sense. that would leave me with only option b.. hm.
of course, I'm oversimplifying things.

Metric – Blindness Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't think that there's enough in there to state the existence of sexual connotations at all. I do like the way you interpret a lot of the elements on the song, though, and I believe that it could fit a number of other situations just as well. I'm sticking with broader, general sense of escape and extreme discomfort.

Butterfly Boucher – Just One Tear Lyrics 14 years ago
I think these are more accurate:

Just one tear I'll shed for this
Just one tear
And not one more
Say you'll never do the same again

Say hello
Say hello to the high life
The one you dream about
The one you think about
Say goodnight (goodnight)
Oh no
Say goodnight to the one you love
Be on your way knowing
That they'll be there in the morning

Just one tear I'll shed for this
Just one tear
And not one more
Say you'll never do the same again

Just one tear I'll shed for this
Just one tear
And not one more
Say you'll never do the same again

You don't know
You don't know what a daydream...
I could be the girl who kisses everyone at the party
Say hello
Say hello to the new girl
Who's she here for?
You should've seen her freeze in the doorway

Just one tear I'll shed for this
Just one tear
And not one more
Say you'll never do the same again

Just one tear I'll shed for this
Just one tear
And not one more
Say you'll never do the same again

Do I feel sadness?
Do I feel shame?
I'd cover my face now but all of these turn to stone
Except one thing
I can't control
Watch it slowly roll down my face
Across my lips
The lips you loved
Well, stupid me for thinking
I was the only one you ever needed

Just one tear I'll shed for this
Just one tear
And not one more
Say you'll never do the same again

Just one kiss
Yeah, right
Just one kiss
You said you'd never do the same
Just one kiss
I leave with you
Just one kiss
Before I go
We'll never be the same again

Patrick Wolf – The Sun Is Often Out Lyrics 15 years ago
aidan, I don't mean to sound like I know better than anyone, but...

I'll share my other interpretation here.
stephen was very sensitive and depressed. his art reflected what he saw. right? and what he saw was the world. his art mirrored this world. therefore, when patrick refers to stephen's work of art as being too heavy for him to cope with, I think it could mean that the world was heavy as well, yes, and his art was precisely a result of that.

of course, these are all conjectures, and I mean no offense whatsoever.

Patrick Wolf – The Sun Is Often Out Lyrics 15 years ago
I also think he was some kind of artist ― maybe a writer or a visual artist, it really isn't relevant ―, in part because patrick mentions a "gift", but mainly for the line:

"was your work of art so heavy that it will not let you live?"

which to me means that his art will most likely be considered so obscure or gruesome or difficult that he won't ever be acknowledged as the great artist the singer believes he was. therefore, he will not live on through the art he's left to the world.
still, he'll be remembered by his dear ones.

I have other interpretations, but I think this one is perfectly plausible.
stephen was brilliant and tormented, and that happens and has happened so many times in our History.

this song just hit me today. I love the bachelor.

thanks, dustybreeze.

captanchron, I didn't know that, but I didn't mean that the song was "about a book". I was just guessing that the title could be a reference to the book, which doesn't mean the song can't be about his father's death. considering shake_it_loose's comment, it could fit. I haven't read the book though. anyway, it's an inoffensive assumption, chill out.

I'm thinking the rose-colored stanza is not about glasses, but circular windowpanes. it makes sense to me - they frame your eyes as well, and you can have your knuckles stained if you try to break the glass with your own hands.

Panic! at the Disco – She Had The World Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with the comment above. I'm quite certain the song has only one perspective. I'd just like to point out this verse:

Because when I look in her eyes, I just see the sky.

Here, I think he's reinforcing the idea that he doesn't love her. At first, we'd think it's a romantic statement, but if you consider the whole meaning, it doesn't really seem to be. What is the sky? It's something beautiful, enormous, but... it's empty, in a sense that it's full of things you can't reach or touch. So that's what he sees in her eyes - something beautiful, dreamy, but distant.

Bell X1 – Pinball Machine Lyrics 15 years ago
I think so, too.

"Maybe it's all about sowing my seed
But subject to conditions and not while you bleed"

"One night only"

"I believe you share my bed
You share the blame"

These lines reinforce the idea of unexpected pregnancy.
Comparing a girl crying to a pinball machine... That's a genuinely ingenious idea. Just as in these other lines:

"I follow you at a distance
Bounced through others eyes
Like a pinball machine"

The complications that the event has brought them, most likely family issues and the personal burden a child would represent to them. This scene works either literally or simply metaphorically: he nervously glances at her, aware of all the stares ricocheting from one to the other. He probably thinks everyone sees him as the sole catalyzer of the incident, engulfed in discomfort and paranoia.

It's a beautiful, creative way of describing such a common situation. Great, great song.
I'm particularly curious about what the Salvador's dream could mean... And who Mr. Walker is.
