I've listened to this song hundreds of times and still have NO idea what it means. I know most of the songs on Dark Was the Night have to do with love, sex and AIDS but this one is so ridiculously hard to analyze. Not to mention the lyrics are hard to hear. Nonetheless, this is one of my favorite songs from 2009. So hauntingly beautiful. |

I've known this song for years, but being able to relate to the lyrics 100% makes it that much more real. Personal opinion: Drunken hook up with a close friend. There's been something there for years. It might have been terrible timing to continue anything in the future ("Ten days of perfect tunes" probably meaning very little time left with each other), but that doesn't mean the moment didn't have any less meaning or significance than you thought it would. I've never really understood the "razor blades" reference... does it have to do with finally "cutting" the tension? And "red and blue"... does that mean sex bruises and hickeys? |

I might just be making it extremely personal, but I take it as a post high school/pre college experience. "put a little something in our lemonade and take it with us" is obviously referring to spiking drinks to have a little fun. "Half awake" means not completely sober. "Turn out the light, say goodnight." Who can't relate to that. An amazing night ends and all you want to do is "figure out everything at once". I mean, I guess this song could be interpreted much more deeply, but I really think this song is as simple as it seems: You should cherish those amazing moments where you feel like you're on top of the world and you think... refresh that... KNOW it's not going to last. |

I can't even comprehend how amazing this song is live. The intro was extended a good three minutes, which made the those first few guitar chords absolutely beautiful. a) I completely agree with you, bluegrimlin2 . the whole sort of sounds like the younger years where you don't know much of anything are the best. and b) this song means more to me than words can describe. i will admit, i heard this song a few years after it came out (but before garden state, which was a fabulous movie) but, as everyone else has said, you get such a nondescript feeling when you listen to it. plus, this song will ALWAYS remind me of the one guy i will never forget, who handed me his headphones on a subway in new york and said 'this song will change your life.' i picture him every time i hear it. |

kicknaiser hit the nail on the head... that's exactly what i was going to say. here's the picture in my head; two high school sweet hearts. it's the summer right before they go off to college. the girl has everything going for her, she's beautiful smart and is going far in life. the guy is sweet, but he may not go as far as she will. they both love eachother a lot, but they both know it won't work out because she's moving far away for college and he's staying in town. he's trying to let go because he knows how hard it will be if he waits until she's gone. i love this song. it'll always remind me of last summer. great cd. dashboard has been amazing and will always be amazing. |

I love this song, it made me tear up the first time I heard it. I have a different take on the song compared to everyone else, though. Yes, I agree the moments are priceless and it's with the person you can't live without, but you also realize nothing ever this perfect could last that long or stay the same, it's not how life goes. the lines 'So divine is this happening Can't I just graze your skin For the rest of our time But time isn't letting this night go on' Make me believe he realizes he will always remember those precious nights, but they will soon come to an end. |
