Matt Redman – Beautiful News Lyrics | 17 years ago |
IT'S ACTUALLY: "Joy is the theme of my song, And the BEAT of my heart" AND... There's a God who came down to SAVE, (yeah) |
Wilco – Let's Not Get Carried Away Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The correct lyrics are: I got a million things that I'd rather do Than to play rock n roll for you oh honey if i blow you a fuse can i please be excused |
Nine Inch Nails – In This Twilight Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I don't listen to this song as a depiction of a nuclear explosion. I see it as a man contemplating suicide "watch the sun, as it crawls across a final time" being his last day on earth. Yet the chorus brings a sense of optimism, not necessarily an escape from the suicide, but a hope for something beyond this life, a sense that this earth is the unreality, and the twilight is simply the phase in between life and death (the contemplation of his own suicide). I subscribe to this hope as well: "and the sky is filled with light can you see it? all the black is really white if you believe it as the time is running out let me take away your doubt we can find a better a place in this twilight" |

Bob Dylan – Ain't Talkin' Lyrics | 17 years ago |
18 stanzas of heart burnin' goodness. I listen to this song as a digression of the human heart. At first, the narrator is still trying to hold onto something good (although unsuccessfully): "They say prayer has the power to heal So pray from the mother In the human heart an evil spirit can dwell I am a-tryin' to love my neighbor and do good unto others But oh, mother, things ain't going well" But the struggle is too much, and the heart is quickly darkened, readily admitting that it will commit evil, if given the chance: Now I'm all worn down by weeping My eyes are filled with tears, my lips are dry If I catch my opponents ever sleeping I'll just slaughter 'em where they lie |
Bob Dylan – The Levee's Gonna Break Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I read this line as a struggle to reconcile natural evils with a belief in a good God: "If it keep on rainin', the levee gonna break Everybody saying this is a day only the Lord could make" And this is a reference to all of the crime and theft that took place in the wake of the Katrina disaster: "If it keep on rainin', the levee gonna break Some of these people gonna strip you of all they can take" oooh, this is an interesting reference to the christian eschatological belief that christ's return will be followed by 1000 years of peace: "Put on your cat clothes, mama, put on your evening dress Few more years of hard work, then there'll be a 1,000 years of happiness" |
Bob Dylan – Nettie Moore Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Some spiritual imagery from dylan: Well, the world of research has gone berserk Too much paperwork Albert's in the graveyard, Frankie's raising hell I'm beginning to believe what the scriptures tell Today I'll stand in faith and raise The voice of praise The sun is strong, I'm standing in the light I wish to God that it were night |
Bob Dylan – Beyond the Horizon Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Ok, some of the songs on this album already conjured memories of the willie nelson album "stardust," but the inclusion of the actual word "stardust" in this song is a dead giveaway. I see this as dylan's acknowledgement of his debt to nelson's album. it's also interesting that stardust is a cover album, while "modern times" is driven by some "covers" (eg. Someday Baby). Favorite lines: I'm touched with desire What don't I do? Through flame and through fire I'll build my world around you Beyond the horizon, at the end of the game Every step that you take, I'm walking the same It's dark and it's dreary I've been pleading in vain I'm wounded, I'm weary My repentance is plain Beyond the horizon o'r the treacherous sea I still can't believe that you have set aside your love for me Beyond the horizon, 'neath crimson skies In the soft light of morning I'll follow you with my eyes Through countries and kingdoms and temples of stone Beyond the horizon right down to the bone Beyond the horizon, the sky is so blue I've got more than a lifetime to live lovin' you (Sorry, that's just about the whole song, but I would like to add that "round about midnight" is probably a reference, somehow, to Thelonious Monk's "round midnight." I'd like to think that these two lovers are listening a little Monk.) |
Bob Dylan – Workingman's Blues #2 Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I'm always intrigued by songwriters who can pull off the poor old boy image after their success has assuredly made them rich old men. Bob Dylan does this masterfully. And, true to form, Dylan subtely inserts a spiritual allusion: "In you, my friend, I find no blame" |
Bob Dylan – Someday Baby Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Does any other twenty-something-year-old (who thought this song would be the defining dylan moment of their lives) feel betrayed by the revelation that this is a cover? oh well. it is still filled with great lines: "I'm so hard pressed, my mind tied up in knots I keep recycling the same old thoughts " (This is a dylan-original line right?) |
Bob Dylan – When the Deal Goes Down Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is one of a few songs on the Modern Times record that takes me back to Willie Nelson' masterful Stardust record...musically (though I was not alive at the time). As a Christian, I can't help but love the beautiful spiritual imagery in Dylan: "We all wear the same thorny crown Soul to soul, our shadows roll And I'll be with you when the deal goes down" And Dylan's opening stanzas get me every time: In the still of the night, in the world's ancient light Where wisdom grows up in strife My bewildering brain, tolls in vain Through the darkness on the pathways of life Each invisible prayer is like a cloud in the air Tomorrow keeps turning around We live and we die, we know not why But I'll be with you when the deal goes down (best stanza in the song) |
Bob Dylan – Rollin' and Tumblin' Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Ugh. I know this feeling: "Well, I did all I know just to keep you off my mind Well, I paid and I paid and my sufferin' heart is always on the line" "...I'm flat out spent, this woman been drivin' me to tears" Best line of the song: "The night's filled with shadows, the years are filled with early doom I've been conjuring up all these long dead souls from their crumblin' tombs" And Dylan's version of make-up and make-out: "Let's forgive each other darlin', let's go down to the greenwood glen Let's put our heads together, let's put old matters to an end" |
Bob Dylan – Spirit on the Water Lyrics | 17 years ago |
It's interesting how even the best lyricists can create bad poetry: "I'd forgotten about you Then you turned up again I always knew That we were meant to be more than friends" But the magic of Dylan is the insane amount of poetic thought that goes into each song (20 stanzas in this one), and each song is filled with gems: High on the hill You can carry all my thoughts with you You've numbed my will This love could tear me in two I wanna be with you in paradise And it seems so unfair I can't go back to paradise no more I killed a man back there and the quasi-biblical allusion: I've been trampling through mud Praying to the powers above I'm sweating blood You got a face that begs for love |
Bob Dylan – Thunder on the Mountain Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The "Jesus Freak" movement of the seventies temporarily hooked in a batch of hipsters, but Dylan shows that he's not one of these: "Some sweet day I'll stand beside my king I wouldn't betray your love or any other thing" |
Snowden – Sisters Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Could it be about Sisters (nuns)? If so, verry interesting: "I am here to bring you peace/I'll keep you alive,/keep you alive/when His (God's) light will not suffice/and I'll never bring you to your knees (prayer)." And perhaps the vow of chastity creeps into this line: "so many ways to break a man/but one is not to touch him at all" |

Snowden – Victim Card Lyrics | 17 years ago |
What a heartbreaking melody. So many lives fall into the pattern of placing the blame somwhere else, content to fall into depression, as the victim of some injustice (e.g. my parents don't support me, too much is expected of me, my job sucks, etc.) |
Snowden – Innocent Heathen Lyrics | 17 years ago |
how many girls out there believe themselves to be innocent, but when it really gets down to it, there's nothing innocent about them (except for this self-image)? this is a song about being under such a girl's spell. |
Snowden – Black Eyes Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Not many songwriters tap into this theme, but it is such a common one (for me at least). As I walk around my college campus, I am flooded with images of beautiful girls. Beautiful girls who are looking for trophy husbands with an equal affection for the superficial. If only once, these beautiful girls could be hiding more beneath the spray-on tan. |
