Here's a fun fact: the plural of cul-de-sac is actually culs-de-sac.
Not to say John Darnielle isn't a genius. Because he is. Very much so. |

I've never heard this song, but they lyrics are incredible. I can see several different interpretations of this song, but the one I choose to believe is that this girl has taken the narrator from his horrible environment. [John did, after all, have a difficult youth]. She is saving him by destroying his past. And it is exciting for him. He doesn't panic. "There are too many colors surrounding me." She's opened up this whole new world for him. |

This song... is like a deep breath to me. Kind of a break from the normal theme of dysfunctional couples... this song is about promises kept, love, and starting fresh. They've surely both had hard pasts... she bears the scar of hers... but all that matters is this moment for them. So beautiful. Definitely one of my favorites of John's. |

this song was a sensation at my school, because of the SNL short "Dear Sister." [for an economics project, some of my friends decided to do their own version of "Dear Sister"... tying it into tariffs or something like that haha] For the last few weeks of school everyone was walking around humming "Mmm what d'ya say?" It got extremely annoying. But lately I've been listening to the entire song, and reading over the lyrics quite a bit, and I agree with the idea that this is about 9/11... it just seems to fit so perfectly.
So, yeah. Catchy song.
PS - I hate the OC, and watching the scene where they use this (after watching "Dear Sister," of course) seems so absurd and hilarious and I can't think of a more ridiculous way to use this song. *Bang* "Mm what d'ya say..." haha.... |

I heard him perform this back in June '06. When I heard it, it was just so powerful to me. Definitely one of my favorites off of "Get Lonely." |

this song is where I got my screen name. It's the song that made me fall in love with the Mountain Goats, and I absolutely adore it. I got the most wonderful chills when I first heard the line: "The most remarkable thing about you standing in the doorway is that it's you and that you are standing in the doorway." He nailed it. |
