Massive Attack – Flat Of The Blade Lyrics 14 years ago
Should mention that a bigger fan than me mentioned that Massive Attack talk about "Buffalo Soldiers" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_Soldier, which apparently play a part in American-Rasta culture. I know nothing about this at all but it's an interesting sub-meaning.

Massive Attack – Flat Of The Blade Lyrics 14 years ago
I get the feeling that this is about a war veteran or similar.
"I'm not good in a crowd"
refers to PTSD or flashbacks experienced when in a crowded noisy enviroment.
"I've got skills I can't speak of"
I can kill people but I can't speak about it/it's not acceptable to be a solider. (remember MA are British where, unlike in America, soldiering isn't as glorified profession, at least insofar as I'm aware, I'm in Aus)

"Things that I've seen
Will chase me to the grave"
Pretty obvious

"Led with your hands tied
Fetters and flies"
This lyric is wrong "Led with your hands tied fed to the sandflies" Presumably referring to desert executions or being captured.

The chorus refers to the weight of a weapon, a double meaning of both the guilt of killing and the weight of the 'blade', in this case a gun.

"How does it feel
To kneel at defeat?
To kneel at defeat
At the choices you make"

Again a wrong lyric.
"How does it feel
To kneel at the feet?
To kneel at the feet of the choices you made" Again fairly obvious.

I have no real understanding of Backs to the Wheel or Granite to shove. Only that the latter is obviously a link to hard manual labour.

"I will pilfer my family a bulletproof love" This lyric is wrong, it's build not pilfer, he just puts an odd emphasis on the 'bu' sound.

Joy Division – Atmosphere Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't think they were meant to be KKK members, the costumes where probably just designed to somehow dehumanise the people so that they weren't individuals. I believe that clip was made after Ian died and was meant as a kind of eulogy. The photos where taken by the director of the clip and were used as promotional material.

Interpol – All Fired Up Lyrics 17 years ago
This has nothing to do with the meaning itself. But when I hear this I get an image of a Top-hatted figure with a cane and a long jacket taking on a mansion full of goons to get the girl.

You know the type of fight scene where the hero is almost dancing while pegging everyone out? Cane has a knife in the handle and spring loaded spike in the base. Two pistols with auto-loaders ala Equilibrium in his sleeves.
That kind of thing, Interpol has always reminded me of a macabre kind of hat-and-cane show with their sick but veiled lyrics.

God, now I want a knife/spike/cane. dammit.

Radiohead – Idioteque Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is just the utter terror of humanity at war, be it a guns and blood war or a war with itself, the hysteria attached with both and the mania that always comes with the religious.

Every time I hear this I get a mild sense of panic, there are parts where Yorke takes the part of the faltering adjudicator (Let me hear both sides) and the fanatics on both sides (ice age coming).

Idioteque is what happens if you put the world into a panic situation. Get the women and children out, this is really happening take the money take the money go go go run get out, the electronic buzz as communications go off and so on.

Panic, utter panic.

Interpol – Hands Away Lyrics 17 years ago
I always figured this was something along the lines of the 'unhappy housewife' kinda thing that went on in the '50s (still goes on today, but is occasionally SPOKEN about, plus we have divorce etc, I'm not here for an argument). Any way
Will you put my hands away?
- Will you stop me from ever doing anything again?
Will you be my man
- Will you marry me (who DIDN'T get this?)

Serve it up don't wait
- Wife serving up a dinner for her abusive husband and friends

Lets see about this ham.
- An additional line to firstly end of the rhyme and also to further the housewife idea ( husband shouting in kitchen at wife over ham not being ready.

Home spun desperation's knowing
Inside your cover's always blown
-Putting on a happy face, knowing there is no way out (homespun desperation)

I think that line on the lyrics are wrong
I THINK that it's
Home spun desperation
Inside your cover is always blown

At any rate, yeh about that idea of a 50's housewife who is abused but can't get out, cause society won't allow it.

Radiohead – My Iron Lung Lyrics 17 years ago
Personally I think this song is regarding people's 'need' for religion, an emotional iron lung of sorts, 'Faith your driving me insane, you do it everyday' literally, faith: your contradictions are turning me insane.
"The Headshrinkers", religion could be considered an intellectual shrinker, preventing logical thought and trying to put emotion over reason.

Suck your teenage thumb: 'addicted to religion, because it's your comfort, like a teenager behind a cause'

When the power runs out we'll just hum 'when we see the faults (the power goes away) we'll just hum along to hymns etc.'

We are grateful for our iron lung 'We are grateful to god for letting us live', quite an important part of any religion really.

and if your frightened , you can be frightened it's ok 'its ok to be scared, god will protect you god is watching over you, it's ok to be scared of new ideas BECAUSE THEY WILL HURT YOU!' such a nice way to prevent doubt is to present new ideas as false.

The whole pain thing at the beginning is referring to religion failing to supply the persons need for truth.

Just my little interpretation, I have no idea what the bacon and the Uncle is about
