Oh, Hey Mercedes was a lot of fun live. Just watch them on youtube and see Nanna's energy. He really loves performing. I was lucky enough to catch them, WITH Broach, on the Braid reunion tour when they were in Austin. That was probably one of the greatest shows I've seen. What a treat. |

Wow I'm getting in here way way late, but I just revived my Hey Mercedes collection. Before I found Hey Mercedes I would email Nanna about different Braid songs. I think he responded maybe twice, but I specifically remember him responding to this song and basically what he told me was that it was about how he is against self-promotion. I have to agree. This song is filled with personal experience and intensity that exists only in an actual experience. You can't feel the way he feels when he sings this song unless you've felt that cosmic sadness; it runs deep. |

at first i thought he was talking about the chemicals of 2 people colliding but he's actually talking about subjectivity and consciousness (all the chemicals in your own brain colliding). how exciting! i love this song. |

obviously this song is about detachment from love. like someone said about his father.
"I could never find my way without you,
but you’re already there.
We’ve come a long long way without maps in our hands.
It’s all we have."
he can't find his way without his father, but his father is already there, so he can't have his dad help him along the whole time, he had to break out and do it on his own, because like he says "we've come a long way without maps" so he knows it's possible to do it on his own.
basically he is staying around, when he knows becoming independent is the best option, just because of his feelings (which are seemingly invisible) and the attachment to other human beings is only an illusion (created by chemicals in your brain). |

haha i was thinking the same thing collegeguy, i highly doubt this is about christianity, but those people can stretch anything to line up with their reality.
sounds like someone is trying to detach themselves, maybe from their mother. whats the point in being attached because it just erases YOUR identity? so break out and become independent, even if you think the person you are attached to is everything in your life because you can invent yourself the way you want.
the part about the smiling may or may not be intentional by the person (mother), but the point is that the smile PERVADES him (not prevade) which means to "become spread throughout all parts" he is basically overcome by the things that are above words (body language and facial expression), but just because that smile gives him such a great feeling, does that mean he'd sell his identity for that feeling (sell your soul for gold?) |

I know the writer probably meant something different than I interpreted when I hear the song but this is what it means to me:
Some people want long lasting monogamous relationships some people want other things. Well I've always wanted one but I never felt so dedicated to someone as I am currently. This song, to me, is like all of my experiences, all of the conscious changes I've made in my life, my memories, my decisions, my travels, they've all lead up to this, my biggest goal... relationship permanance. I've met someone to share the rest of my life with, to share my experience with... to combine my consciousness with her, because everything is for her, for us. All the pieces that exist now will always be the building blocks for tomorrow, and all the chances that we take (like moving to a new state for graduate school) we will always have this place. That place is us, our shared experience, our combined consciousness. |
