Modest Mouse – Might Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this was written before he actually broke his jaw, which I think is interesting. He broke his jaw while The Moon & Antarctica was in the works in 1999 (it was released in 2000) and "Might" was recorded in 1995 and 1996 (released in 1996). So the jaw reference is not literal.

I have heard/read many references to broken jaws and everytime I hear them it seems to refer to love (or the lack of love when then there once was love). I have searched for some sort of proof that the broken jaw is a reference to rotting love, but I haven't really found anything published on the idea (sorry to ramble about this). Anyway, I always just take the broken jaw to have something to do with love and to anyone saying Modest Mouse doesn't write about relationships, you may need to listen more carefully.

With a broken jaw it would be difficult to communicate and doing something as simple and vital as getting nutrition even becomes difficult. Take that and apply it metaphorically to any type of love that is falling apart and I think it makes sense--lack of communication, lack of satisfaction due to even the most simple things being difficult.

I know I may not be right, but it's something to think about.

Wilco – Pot Kettle Black Lyrics 14 years ago
I love this song. I guess everyone gets what it's saying. I agree with the interpretation by Luminol58 that he is actually calling the pot "kettle-black." However, I think the speaker feels entitled to what he says because he has "emptied out his pockets" (owned up to what he has to own up to). "Empty out your pockets" is the speaker (Kettle) urging "Pot" to own up to their mistakes/wrongdoings as well. In a sense, he is calling the pot "kettle-black," but the fact that he can admit to his own actions makes it okay for him to say those things. I just wanted to touch on that specific aspect because no one else has said anything about it and I don't feel like stating the more obvious or repeating what has already been said. Isn't Wilco the greatest!?

Also, I agree with Lou-Lou--the underlying melody is extremely similar and I urge others to go have a listen. I have noticed a variation of the melody from "In Between Days" in other Cure songs. It may just be the actual technical breakdown of the melody that is so similar. I don't think there is any real harm or unjustice in the similarity.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Today Lyrics 15 years ago
hi, i know this is over a year after you have posted your question, but maybe you or someone else is still curious.

i can see it two ways. the first other people have thought about and posted. the second is the original way and main way i think about it, but i don't think anyone else has posted yet. i cannot say for sure, of course, but this is what i make from it.

1. in reference to the line "pink ribbon scars," it may mean the cuts on his stomache.

2. a reference to anorexia, maybe.

i hope this helps somebody.

Conor Oberst – Synesthete Song Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm pretty sure this is just about schizophrenia.. That makes complete sense. There is no real "figuring out" to do with this song. I think it is straight up talking about schizophrenia.

Pink Floyd – Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 3 Lyrics 15 years ago
Okay, the movie The Wall can help with interpretations...but if you examine the album for yourself before watching the movie you will probably appreciate both a little more.

Also, The Wall is Roger Water's mix of himself and Syd Barrett. He felt like he was starting to relate with Syd more and more. I don't think Roger ever lost it to the extent that Syd did, but he had his own issues.

I think this is like denying that you need help even though you know you have "truly gone fishing." And you keep lying to yourself because you don't feel like there is any hope for a change.

Pink Floyd – One of My Turns Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with everyone who has sadi it is about bipolar disorder. A turn would be when you shift from the depression into the mania (or vice versa)--in this song it seems to be going from depression to mania (if you have no idea what it feels like you can at least tell through it's implications in the instruments and voice and lyrics).

Tilly and the Wall – Tall Tall Grass Lyrics 15 years ago
Disregard that last comment, now it doesn't seem that way to me. The do have the same beginning chord and the tiniest bit similar of a strumming pattern, but now I don't hear them as being so similar.

Conor Oberst – Eagle on a Pole Lyrics 15 years ago
I think Leonard Cohen is an influence to Simon Joyner too, though. Maybe that is where he got it from.

Yeah, what he says is subject to change with his imagination.

You're probably right about there being a lot of eagles sitting on poles out there, looking not quite like themselves. :)

Conor Oberst – Eagle on a Pole Lyrics 16 years ago
In the Leonard Cohen song "Story of Isaac" there is the line
"Thought I saw an eagle - "Saw an eagle on a pole
But it might have been a vulture" - Think it was an eagle"

That might not have anything to do with this song, but Conor has been known for the references to the Old Testament and Leonard Cohen has been an influence to Conor. I don't know how to exactly fit it into the song, maybe someone else has an idea if it is a reference.

Tilly and the Wall – Tall Tall Grass Lyrics 16 years ago
Does anyone notice the similarities between the beginning of A Perfect Sonnet and Tall Tall Grass? Similar chords and strumming patterns are used in the intros. Also that song could have been about Neely. Plus both songs have some of that innocence theme. I know those are common themes among both bands but I wanted to bring it to attention. This song shares similarities to other BE songs as others have already stated. Maybe it is just a coincidence and A Perfect Sonnet was not even being thought of when Tall Tall Grass was written.

I had a playlist going in iTunes and when the beginning of Tall Tall Grass started I thought "I didn't put A Perfect Sonnet in there.." and then realized. I had to listen to A Perfect Sonnet, I know they don't sound all that similar but I haven't listened to A Perfect Sonnet in probably a year, so it may be hard for someone else to hear. So I won't mistake the two again, but I was amazed with the similar chords and very similar strumming pattern. That is just for the beginnings of each song though.

I probably just rambled way too much, sorry. Just thought I would add that.

Mirah – The Dogs of B.A. Lyrics 16 years ago
Here is the part in Spanish:
Ella hacía el lavado de una terraza,
Mientras el sol le quemaba la espalda,
Ella intentaba fregar el sudor de su desconsuelo,
Escurrir las lágrimas,
Pero antes que la tarea estuviera terminada,
La ropa todavía doliente en la soga,
Bajó desde el delta un viento poderoso
Y las nubes se cargaron a lo largo del cielo
¡Rápido, adentro, cerrad las ventanas, viene una tormenta!
Sacá tu ropa de la soga

and here is what it means in English (I just found a translator):
She was doing the wash of a patio,
Meanwhile the sun was burning the back,
She was trying to wash the perspiration of his grief,
To drain the tears,
But before the task it was finished,
The still aching clothes in the cord,
It lowered from the delta a powerful wind
And the clouds were loaded along the sky
Rapid, I penetrate, close the windows, a thunderstorm comes!
Sacá your clothes of the cord

St. Vincent – Paris Is Burning Lyrics 16 years ago
I thought of WWII as well. Paris was burned in WWII. I know a lot of her songs have that sort of "old" feel (the old style of music from that time), but I think it is even more pronounced in this song and it sort of sounds like it is over a radio in the part where it is like "give us news of the fall/Paris is burning after all/open rejoice revolting/is burning after all"--radio, as you may know, was the most important communication technology. The trumpets at the beginning also give it that feel of the WWII era. There were revolts and a lot of secrets. The secrets would be by telegram occasionally--the French Resistance. And no one really knew who was on who's side with all of the secret agents, and people turned against each other--poison. That could be the WWII take on it. But I definitly think there is probably much more to it than that, and I am not even too sure that this is the meaning. It is objective, but since it was brought up I thought I would give some support to it. I agree that everything that has been posted is valid though. Beautiful song, St. Vincent sure does have her ways.

Elliott Smith – 2:45 AM Lyrics 16 years ago
asknoquestions

"i can't help but think of schizophrenia when i hear this song. some people just black out when another personality takes over.

"if you're gonna say shit now you'll do it out loud "

this may be him trying to face this other personality telling the other one to come out.

"the both of you can just fade to black"

he's so sick of this disease that both personalities can just fade to black. sleepwalking may be when the other personality takes over and he blacks out. this is just my interpretation of the song but i think elliot or whoever wrote it was going more for slike's explanation. slike's point was very well put and made me think a lot."

Schitzophrenia is not about having another personality or fading to black. That is a common misconception of it. This song does not really indicate Schitzophrenia.

And as for the rest of everything, it can pretty much mean whatever you want it to mean. I think 'tonight we win' got it though, at least according to what all I have read and heard everywhere else.

Bright Eyes – I Will Be Grateful for This Day Lyrics 16 years ago
Okay, for anyone who is wondering if it is true that it is about Nelly Jenkins, it is. Neely played bass in Park Ave.(they practiced in the living room) and after school and stuff she started teaching. And the other person who "put the needle in his arm to calm his handsome hell" is his cousin Colin who commited suicide. Listen to Poison Oak, there is a heroin reference in there(well the whole song is about Colin). Anyway, when I first heard this song I was like "HOLY SHIT! IT'S ABOUT NEELY AND COLIN!" And if you haven't heard Park Ave. you need to because they are great!

Bright Eyes – Classic Cars Lyrics 17 years ago
I am not completely sure, but I think Gillian Welch is singing in the background. She sang with him at Bonnaroo and that is who it sounds like. Conor wasn't the person in the interview on Fevers And Mirrors. That was Todd Fink(of The Faint) pretending to be Conor. He and Conor sound a lot a like, but if you listen to that interview carefully, it isn't Conor. It was sort of a joke for the album.
Anyway, I don't think that it is Emmylou Harris. They were never a couple. I am thinking that is is 'Rose' (whoever that is). I remember he dedicated "At The Bottom Of Everything" to her on Austin City Limits. I think he also makes up a lot of names(to avoid people knowing exactly who it is about), so it could be one of the women he talks about in his other songs. Like Laura, Lua, Neely O'Hara, Emily, Kathy, and others I can't think of at the moment. This is a great song(duh). I think as long as you can get something from it, it shouldn't really matter who it is about. He doesn't write for people to guess about who the songs are about. He writes to share experiences, advice, and wisdom.
