Gordon Lightfoot – Race Among the Ruins Lyrics 11 years ago
To me, this song is about achieving something that few others have. The verse about thinking you have the last laugh is often not true as the song states. Unfortunately, what you may have as a result of your hard work and achievement is ruins. I think the ruins can be anything, but the song refers to love. So I could imagine someone who has achieved what he or she thought would be great love, only to find there was nothing there. Now, there is a race among the ruins. A race to get divorced, a race to keep the kids, a race among a destroyed relationship. I think the jester to the clown reference could be referring to the judges in our courts. Perhaps the husband or wife has to play jester to judge (who are often just clowns in gowns) in their race among the ruins.

Either way, this song touches me deeply, not for the love part, but for the achievement part. Much of what we seek to achieve through our efforts turns out to be less fruitful than we first imagined and all of that work is ruins.

Glen Campbell – Country Boy (You Got Your Feet in L.A.) Lyrics 13 years ago
This is a song about a country boy living in the big city. His heart keeps tugging at his mind saying, "Is this who you really are?" I can relate as I worked far harder than I should have or even needed to for 20 years.

Billy Joel – Miami 2017 (Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway) Lyrics 13 years ago
"They turned our power down and drove us underground, but we went right on with the show."

I'm inspired every time I hear that line. I guess I would call it my life's anthem.

Awesome song!!!

Theory of a Deadman – Hate My Life Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm 40 and I could totally relate to this song when I was working and on the verge of walking away from my job. I did walk out several months after this song came out... not because of the song, but the song talks about some of the annoying things that added to my dread. I no longer hate my life.

James Taylor – The Frozen Man Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is about the science of cryogenics told from the person who was brought back to life after being 'frozen' for a number of years. I can't even imagine such a thing. Great song!

James Taylor – October Road Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is about choosing the slower pace and more satisfying life found in rural areas compared with the busy city.

"I did my time
And it changed my mind
Im satisfied oh."

I can relate. Great song!

James Taylor – September Grass Lyrics 13 years ago
This song always reminds me of how September brings weather which is much 'less hot' than the other summer months. Here in South Florida, the summer temperatures are in the mid-90's and the humidity is 80%+. You pretty much can't go outside. But September brings a favorable change. By the time September arrives, you can be outside without feeling the intense heat. Mornings are a little bit cooler. The sun starts setting earlier. A nice time of the year. Great song!

Helen Reddy – I Am Woman Lyrics 13 years ago
I can't help but wonder if the women's movement of the 1970's, which is typified in Helen Reddy's "I Am Woman", resulted in a better world for women. Many women at that time thought that child-rearing, housework and taking care of their husbands was mundane and that men were 'keeping them down' at home. This movement led to a proliferation of dual income families that we still have now. In fact, I recently heard a statistic that there are now more women in the workforce than men. Are women happy about this? Do they like competing in the modern workplace - replete with mundane tasks at work, travel, projects, layoffs, small pay raises (if you're lucky), taxes, the daily commute, office politics, etc. As a recently minted stay-at-home Dad who has 'retired' from 20 years in the workforce, I can tell you that at least for me, being home is much better than being at work. Do the women of the 1970's, so desperate to escape their at-home lives, still prefer working over child-rearing, housework and taking care of their husbands?

Sugarland – Joey Lyrics 14 years ago
This could be the saddest song ever written. Of course I feel bad for the person who died, but I feel even worse for the person left behind - the one singing the song. She's blaming herself for something that was not her fault. Maybe he would have been alive if she had done SOMETHING different, but that doesn't make what happened her fault. She feels so passionately that this accident was her fault when it wasn't and that is what makes this song so sad for me.

My take aways from this song: Don't blame yourself for things that aren't your fault and tell people you love just how much you love them.

What does 'slap your grandma' mean in this song? Why would anyone slap their grandma? Is Grandma the one dancing so she gets a slap on the badonkadonk? Is she not as hot as the one dancing so she gets slapped? What gives?

I wish to extend my thank you and congratulations to soulja boy for creating this song. There is no better way to get all of the girls in a club out there dancing. Maybe the song does have some sexual references but so what? Fact is, these girls like it and when the girls are happy, I am happy.

I hope Soulja Boy makes a million more songs that drive the shawties crazy!!!

Alabama – Song Of The South Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is about how the Yankees influenced much of the south after the civil war. They are still having an influence today. The 'song of the south' used to be a happy prideful one (and full of sweet potato pie... and other good eats I imagine), even if few ever got rich.

When the northern liberal influence came down here (in part via FDR, who was born in NY), government programs such as the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) helped provide 'jobs' to people, though the value of many of those jobs was certainly questionable. The jobs resulted in a loss of the farms and the southern way of life, but ushered in Chevrolets and washing machines and other comforts of life.

But to me, the strongest part of the song is what isn't said. The 'song of the south' that was lost along the way... the grandeur, the cordiality, the timelessness that was the old south. But everyone just shuts their mouth about it ... and eats their sweet potato pie, but now, from the frozen food aisle at the grocery store.

Great song indeed!

Billy Joel – The Downeaster 'Alexa' Lyrics 17 years ago
"I've got bills to pay and children who need clothes
I know there's fish out there but where God only knows
They say these waters aren't what they used to be
But I've got people back on land who count on me "

Isn't this why we all go to work? Even with corporate downsizing, offshoring, trial lawyers, high taxes and whole host of things that have happened, we still get up and work anyway. While Billy Joel chose to write a song about fishermen, we are all fishermen in our own way and we do it for those who count on us.

Barry Manilow – I Write The Songs Lyrics 17 years ago
Odd theory there Matthewpng. I think you are totally wrong. This isn't about a single person writing songs.

This is a song about song writers... some of whom obviously existed thousands of years ago. Music transforms us and takes us to a different time and place. The writers of music want to take you to the same place they were when they wrote it. The songwriter could have been long deceased, but you are feeling the exact same thing he felt when the song was written, even though you may be 1,000 year younger. That's why he says "when I look out through your eyes, I am young again, even though I am very old." His songs never die, because they all take us to the place he created so long ago.

We've all got the ability to be transformed by music, which is the 'place in your soul' he is referring to.

A great song, which is inspiring to other songwriters.

Barry Manilow – Mandy Lyrics 17 years ago
This reminds of the movie You, Me and Dupree, when they kicked Dupree out of the house. His bike broke down and it was raining. The couple who he was living with tried to go out for dinner and they saw him sitting there, soaking wet, with headphones on. He was listening to Barry Manilow's Mandy. They took him back in.

Barry Manilow – I Made It Though The Rain Lyrics 17 years ago
This is a great song about hardship and empathy. No one can understand what it is like to lose someone to cancer, unless they have lost someone to that dreaded disease. No one knows what it is like to lose a child, unless they have lost one. No one knows what it is like to fight in a war unless they have fought in one.

When people who have had similar things happen to them, they share a bond that others are excluded from. People who never knew each other before can become instant friends because they know exactly what hardships the other has suffered.

I made it through the rain
And found myself respected
By the others who
Got rained on too
And made it through

Great lyrics!

John Denver – The Eagle And The Hawk Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is an anthem for me. It is a song about hope. It is one that I have based my entire life on. We've all got blood on our feathers, but we keep pressing on. Even when people call you a fool, go ahead and make your plans to free yourself from whatever binds you. Those who understand what you are doing will share in the freedom you are striving to reach. You can be whatever you want to be... much more than you are now.

Gordon Lightfoot – Carefree Highway Lyrics 17 years ago
This song should be one of the top 500 ever written. It is a great song about innocence lost. He once rode on the 'carefree highway' of life with this girl. Well, it turns out life isn't so carefree. He's wondering what life's highway is bringing her and if she ever thinks about their time together in a simpler more carefree time.

Carefree highway, you seen better days
The mornin' after blues from my head down to my shoes
Carefree highway, let me slip away
Slip away on you

Sentimental lyrics about childhood memories.

Mary Chapin Carpenter – Almost Home Lyrics 17 years ago
To me, this song is about someone who is on the cusp of reaching an important life changing goal, such as sending a kid off to college, marrying a child off or even leaving a broken relationship as she alludes to. Of course, everyone has regrets along the way but in the end, you'll achieve your goals if you let yourself reach for them.

I'm just resting in the arms of the great wide open
Gonna pull my soul in
And I'm almost home

Good stuff.
