Simon and Garfunkel – Bookends Theme Lyrics 15 years ago
archard:
I've always heard this song conjoined with Old Friends and so I think when they say "preserve your memories, they're all that's left you" it means your memories may have been forgotten in old age, but your friends are still there for you.

They're both very sweet songs, I like to imagine myself listening to this in 50 years' time and feeling the full effect, but the bewilderment I feel when I hear it is similar to how Paul Simon felt when writing it, and that's also a beautifully serene feeling.

Ween – Happy Colored Marbles Lyrics 16 years ago
Just because he said it was about hell, doesn't mean it's about the place called hell. Hell could simply mean going insane, hell could mean hating everyone, hell could mean any form of anguish and despair.

Personally I always thought it was about insanity, almost literally 'losing your marbles' but maybe through his own methods as it seems he is admitting to giving them away rather than losing them. But where does that leave the line "I'll ask you for 'em back when I'm ready and done"? Once you're insane I'd say you're in no fit state to determine whether you want to be sane again, I'm sure you'd have a million other inconsequential things on your mind.

With this in mind I'm inclined to agree with rufonz38's interpretation.

OMG WEEN DO ACID SO ALL THEIR SONGS ARE ABOUT ACID

You idiots make me sick. I swear if I read one more "this song is about taking LSD dude!" comment I am going to fucking scream.

Stereolab – Nothing To Do With Me Lyrics 16 years ago
Totally out of context, just a bunch of Morris quotes slung together. For what reason? Each Jam sketch has its own meaning and some have no meaning at all other than surreal and pushing the boundaries of "funny".

When they're chucked loosely together like this they lose any supposed meaning and it just looks like the band are saying "look at us, we like Chris Morris, but you have to like Morris to know what we're on about."

What is point?

Gnarls Barkley – No Time Soon Lyrics 16 years ago
To me this song seems to be about the death of a loved one. Also I believe the second verse is:
"My time will come, yours too.
I'd gladly go before you.
I hope you live forever.
Or maybe we can go together."

With this in mind I definitely think it's about a death, and how he finds it hard to come to terms with and wishes the person would outlive him, such is his love for them.

The first verse sort of makes me think it's about suicide ("Scared to let you out of my sight, 'cuz you never know... you might") A person who is insecure and whom he suspects is considering suicide?

Also, the synth solo that comes in at 1:40 gives me a real vivid image of someone floating towards Heaven. Although maybe that's just me, but this song means a lot to me so just throwin' that out there.

Tomahawk – Desastre Natural Lyrics 16 years ago
RE: Skeeza

I think Patton uses double meanings and metaphors a lot (see: Pink Cigarette etc) but to assume that this song has a double meaning and the way you said it makes me wonder if you think all of his lyrics are double meanings?

I don't think this is the case at all. That's almost akin to saying all their songs are about drugs in that you're passing a lazy judgement on excellent songwriters. I think Patton uses Spanish to detract from the bleak imagery of the song's subject: oblivion. Working on an assumption that most of his fans speak English as a primary language and then using another language as not a complete veil but a tongue-in-cheek puzzle which really isn't hard at all to decode.

Either that or he chose Spanish because Tomahawk are pretty big in Spain/Portugal. Meh.

Panda Bear – Take Pills Lyrics 16 years ago
Lennox said in an interview that when his father died he was taking a lot of anti-depressants. That's the inspiration for this song, telling people that a lot of grief, depression and anxiety is in the mind and can be sorted with willpower and not drugs.

I agree, definitely sounds like he's not ready to be a father.. Ohh this song is utterly sublime.

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum – Sleep Is Wrong Lyrics 17 years ago
in response to Drummah Boih, i agree with your whole theory, but maybe it's more of a family issue, i.e. making your father proud by never sleeping, never slacking off from work, never crying, never dying, until one day you crack, run away and don't return.

either that or it's like, 'when i go out to work i'm never coming home to rest, i will remain at my job.'

DISCUSS.

translate the rest of the lyrics. natural disaster, global warming. volcanoes erupting, rivers drying up, "y esto no es un examen" ("this is not a test")... it really is the end of the world

Tomahawk – Capt. Midnight Lyrics 17 years ago
i think it's about a stalker, personally. a few tomahawk songs follow similar suit of obnoxious, self-obsessed desires. patton sounds freakishly obsessive about this person, saying "our past stops right now" as if to clear out any confrontation he has had with this person while yrying to get closer to them, and making a fresh start. i also see this in "we'll de trying to live so long."
also i reckon it covers aspects of schizophrenia where at first he's calm and showing interest, whereas in the chorus he seems to be violent and craving the person in question. then, at the end, he's calm again, saying he "should" wait for this person to comply rather than forcing them...

also the fact that it's called capt. midnight makes me feel as though he's watching the person under a cover of darkness.

Aphex Twin – Windowlicker Lyrics 17 years ago
haha what a genius we have here. "oh it's shit it's shit dying cat constipated deaf retard blah blah. although i do like the drums." keep spurting crap, supermarleyfan1, it's idiots like you who fuel the artists such as aphex twin to constantly push the boundaries of what is entertaining in music, and although it may come as a shock to you, a lot of people enjoy it, and no amount of spamming these pages will change that.

now, about the song: windowlicker is definitely a derogatory term used to describe mentally ill people in britain. i also heard that rich sampled retarded people for the groans in this song and tweaked them about as he does to suit his own needs within the song. who knows if it's true, except richard of course, but those noises do sound mentally challenged. and out of it richard creates something which is mentalling challenging. awesome

Aphex Twin – Beetles Lyrics 17 years ago
how the hell do you go about editing the content on here? because they're really not the real lyrics. anyone who's even remotely british can see that he says "beetles, under my carpet, under my feet. they come out in the heat."
and it hardly takes a genius to see it. i mean, how can anyone think that the word 'under' sounds like the word 'shit'? "shit my carpet" makes no sense either way.

Mr. Bungle – Sweet Charity Lyrics 17 years ago
anyone who says mr bungle writes songs about drug experiences needs to start living in the real world where not every tom dick and harry takes mushrooms and writes beautiful music about it. i appreciate that most idiots need hard drugs to reach clarity in their expressionism and some good music does come from it, but patton says the only drug he takes is caffeine and i believe that. especially since in the 'thanks' section of their debut record, caffeine is mentioned.

the only thing mike and co. were wrecked on whilst writing this stuff is intelligence and integrity

Dead Kennedys – Religious Vomit Lyrics 17 years ago
can i just say, no matter how dead this discussion is, that dead kennedys always made music pretty much entirely based around sarcastic, ironic or just plain stupid views. that's not to say all their songs were a big joke because they were very serious in their motives, it's just that on occasion they would write songs from the viewpoint of people other than themselves in order to show a more interesting side to the frankly boring mindframe of your average punk bands.

that said, i think this song, if not most of the songs on In God We Trust, Inc are all jokes. maybe not the opinions therein, but definitely the departure from standard punk to hardcore punk, as if they were trying to bring across the same morals portrayed in their other work, but just plain faster, somehow hammering it into your brain. i mean, come on, dog bite?

like i say, i don't think the moral beliefs shown on this somewhat short record are a joke, more the way the songs are played is a joke. don't ever take dead kennedys seriously. after all, they don't REALLY kill children...
