Red Hot Chili Peppers – Midnight Lyrics 14 years ago
Another interpretation of "lotus" is the ancient egyptian meaning. I read that the lotus flower closes at night and sinks underwater. It then actually re-blooms every morning (similar to morning glories?). It was known as a symbol of rebirth. This kind of fits with "Just a minute while I reinvent myself," one of srdkna's theories on nine: "a new way of life or thinking," and the line "let's do it all this time."
It's like they messed something up, but they don't regret it because they're going to do it right this time around. Obviously this could relate to drugs or whatever.

Something Happens – Momentary Thing Lyrics 16 years ago
Heard this song on Veronica Mars also. Such a gorgeous song.

First off the lyrics in the chorus are:
It's not like it's permanent

not

It's not like I expected it

I get the idea that its about these people who are just going through all this shit, barely hanging on. And finally the girl in the song just decides she's going to stop playing all the games and be completely open. Hence,
"She's taking off her clothes again, says 'let the whole world see.' She's cutting off her hair again, says, 'this is all of me"

And basicly, he's saying that she totally threw him for a 180. He's trying to convince himself that them being together is just a fling, nothing serious or permanent.

So great.

Tori Amos – Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
I love Tori's version of this song (not that I don't love Nirvana's, because of course they're both amazing)
She makes this song so dramatic.

I'm not sure exactly what this song is supposed to mean, but to me it always seems a little like suburban kids trying to be "ghetto."

"Load up on guns and bring your friends
It's fun to lose and to pretend"
Playing with guys and thinking it's fun to lose your friends to the street.

"She's overboard and self assured"
Going to extremes.

"Oh no, I know a dirty word "
Thinking they're cool because they can curse.

"With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us"
Trying to get their thrill from it all.

The whole song sounds like it's a story of a group of friends who tried to be ghetto, played with guns, trying to get thrill, and even thought it doesn't say, it gives the feeling that someone (the girl that was "overboard and self-assured") ended up hurt or dead.

"Hello, hello, hello, how low? (x3)
Hello, hello, hello! "
This is like the person afterwords asking the world to get a clue and asking how low everyone will go.

"I feel stupid and contagious"
Is the singer's guilt over the situation. She feels stupid for thinking they were invincible and contagious as if it were her fault.

Not sure, but I think maybe this is thier group of friends:
A mulatto - someone who's half-black, half-white
An albino - not literally, but maybe saying he/she acts really white
A mosquito - maybe this person's the one in the group who keeps hanging around, unwanted
My libido - the singer's boyfriend or girlfriend

No idea if this is what it really means. Kinda depressing to think about it this way, though.

Genesis – That's All Lyrics 17 years ago
About a week ago I heard some of this song on the radio and HAD to find it.

I might interpret this different than other people, but it reminds me of a guy that I know. He was all over me for a long time, but I turned him down. Now I'm like him, and somewhere hope he's not over me just yet.

"Just as I thought it was going alright
I find out I'm wrong, when I thought I was right
s'always the same, it's just a shame, that's all"

^This part is sort of skipping to the end of the story that he's telling, so I'll get back to it.

"I could say day, and you'd say night
tell it's black when I know that it's white
always the same, it's just a shame, that's all"

This is like my guyfriend and I, we disagree on SO MUCH, and we bicker (often in a fun way.) However sometimes it's too much which is "just a shame."

"I could leave but I won't go
though my heart might tell me so
I can't feel a thing from my head down to my toes"

^Despite the fighting, I still want the guy. Could give up on him liking me back, but I won't.

"but why does it always seem to be
me looking at you, you looking at me
it's always the same, it's just a shame, that's all"

^This is one of my favorite parts. I see it like I'm telling off the other person, "you're looking at me too, you just won't admit it."

At the same in those lines I'm trying to figure out why we're both are attracted to each other if we don't get along.

"Turning me on, turning me off,"

^Sometimes I can hardly keep myself from jumping him, others I almost hate him for things he does.

"making me feel like I want too much
living with you's just putting me through it all of the time"

^ He's sort of teasing me, and he makes me feel like I want to much. As if I'm the only one who wants a real relationship.

"Running around, staying out all night
taking it all instead of taking one bite
living with you's just putting me through it all of the time"

^Going to the extremes and trying to take it to fast. Being around this guy always makes me do stuff like that.

"Truth is I love you
more than I wanted to"

^This part completely won the song over for me. Those two lines fit so perfectly that it makes me want to cry or die or something! The song's sort of fun and angry, and then -boom- these lines are INTENSE.

"there's no point in trying to pretend
there's been no-one who
makes me feel like you do
say we'll be together till the end"

^Why pretend, we're meant to be together, despite everything that wants to stop us.

"But just as I thought it was going alright
I find out I'm wrong when I thought I was right"

^ This is the part in the song were the song starts out, before it goes back to the beginning.
Things were almost seeming like they were going to work out, but it turns out I really am the only one looking for a real relationship. I thought there was a chance, but it's as if he doesn't even want anything with me anymore.

"it's always the same, it's just a shame, that's all"

^ I'll always feel this way for him. It's gone away for times, but it always comes back. Just a shame because there's nothing I can do to change his mind.

"Well I could say day, and you'd say night
tell me it's black when I know that it's white
it's always the same, it's just a shame, that's all"

^Going back to talking about the differences and what a shame it is.

Okay, so not that anyone cared to read all that, and probably no one will. Anyway, if you made it all the way through, that's my interpretation of this song.

Yeah this is one seriously great song.

Howie Day – She Says Lyrics 17 years ago
I see it slightly different than most the commenters.
Instead of a jealous guy who's just hung up on his ex, it's more about how they both are hung up on each other. Hence,
"When she says she wants someone to love, I hope you know, she doesn't mean you."

The two were meant to be together, but for some reason estranged/broken up. The guy is saying how he's the one who reallly loves her and knows her ("how would you know"), and he's the one she really loves and wants.

I'm thinking maybe the lines next lines are about how the guy she's with isn't around a lot and never took the time to get to know her.
"Sweet is the sight of her room
window open by candle light
how would you know

and that's why i'm wondering why
you had to tell me what's going on in your head
what's wrong
come around to another time when you don't have to run"

I also like what DancinTina wrote:
That's a great way of looking at the song. I was thinking about that, but I think it could also be about a guy whose best friend is a girl and he is singing this song to her boyfriend because he feels that their friendship and his love for her is so much stronger than the existing bond between her and her boyfriend.

Also pretty sure the lyrics are:

"and when she breaks down and lets you down
i hope you know that she doesn't mean to"

Instead of:

"and when she breaks down and lets you down
i hope you know that she doesn't mean you"

I could be wrong about that though.

Ryan Adams – Come Pick Me Up Lyrics 17 years ago
I think b4tree's take on this is really interesting:
"but i see it as something else.
especially the first verse, i feel like Ryans talking about a girl who is kind of reserved and just takes whatever comes at her, like the way he treats her in a relationship, and he wishes she would stand up for herself instead of "cower[ing] in fear in your favorite sweater and an old love letter" . He wishes she would get back at him by screwing his friends and stealing his records. "

the lines "I wish you would," "you know you could," etc. sort of imply that. As if he's telling her that he knows she's worth enough and great enough that she could go and fuck someone over like she's been fucked over. He wants her to screw him up so that she realizes she's not worthless.

"screw all my friends
behind my back
with a smile on your face"
He's saying she could screw them all if that's what she wanted, and he wishes she would, smiling all the while and realizing she has options.

Obviously it works out the way everyone else is saying also, but b4tree has a real cool take on it I hadn't thought of before.

This song is drop dead great either way. I heard it first in Elizabethtown (hilarious movie, ya'll got to admit.) When I found out it was Ryan Adams, I was so excited. Had to give it another listen... then I had to buy it.

Edwin McCain – I'll Be Lyrics 17 years ago
Hmm, everytime I see these lyrics I remember that it is "strands in your eyes," not "strength in your eyes." I like my way better. :p

Anyway, this song is such a timeless beauty.
The way I see it is that the person who is being sung to had helped the singer through something really tough, thus the lyrics:
"I'll be captivated, I'll hang from your lips
Instead of the gallows of heartache that hang from above"
"You're my survival, you're my living proof
My love is alive and not dead"

and the singer is now coming back to this person and telling him/her that she/he gave them the strength to make it through, hence:

"I've dropped out, burned up, fought my way back from the dead
Tuned in, turned on, remembering the things you said"

and now the singer is ready for a relationship and wants to show the same kind of love that he was shown, ergo the lines:

"I'll Be your cryin' shoulder
I'll Be love suicide
I'll Be better when I'm older"

and, "I'll Be the greatest fan of your life" is saying how thankful the singer is for how the other person helped, and how the singer will never forget that.

I love this song, and of course, it reminds me of someone, which is why I like "strength in your eyes" (even though that doesn't make sense with "that color them wonderful" :} ) because this guy has the most maturity and the most strength in his eyes than I have ever seen. That carried me through and helped me fight my way back from the dead.

Ryan Star – Losing Your Memory Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is mesmorizing.
It can really work on so many different levels. I'm really disapointed there are no one's comments on here to read yet, because I want to know what other people think.

If you just read the lyrics it seems as if maybe it's about someone who runs away. "Your losing your memory now," may refer to her, after time, forgetting her home (settling in to wherever she now lives) and what ever it was she was running from.

In the song, he seems to be challenging her to come home, and telling her he misses her, even if she's slowly forgetting him.

It could also be that in the song he's talking to a friend that doing something harmful to themselves (maybe using or something) and they're slowly drifting away. This is how I see it, makes me think of my best friend.

"Call all your friends
And tell them you're never coming back
Cause this is the end
Pretend that you want it
Don't react
The damage is done
The police are coming too slow now
I would have died
I would have loved you all my life"
Could be him saying, sort of in anger and hurt at what the person is doing, that that person is deserting their friends.

"You're losing your memory now" would be referring to memory loss from the drug.

"Where have you gone,
The beach is so cold in winter here" is about them being "gone" rather than physically gone.

"Remember the day
Cause this is what dreams should always be
I just want to stay
I just want to keep this dream in me" is saying to remember times before getting into all this trouble, and that's how it should be. That's what dreams should be.

Then the verse about waking up and "the best of what we've done is yet to come" is about getting out of the trouble and living for real.

Alright now someone else has got to comment now.

The Cranberries – Zombie Lyrics 17 years ago
Obviously this song is about the war in Ireland, but its sounds like it's more about how the violence is still there and how a veteran of that war has to still live with those experiences.

It's the same old theme since 1916
In your head,
In your head they're still fightin'
With their tanks
In your head they are dying

I think "Zombie" is sort of referring to how the old veteran is living in the past. It's not anything against the veteran just acknowledging that he's still living during that war.

The song really works in referrence to abuse or drugs also.
Amazing song either way!

Pink – Love Song Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is gorgeous.

"and even tho at the end she says "this is my very first love song that didnt end in tears" it sounds like shes crying. "

I agree, Alice. If you go online and watch her sing this on "Sessions at AOL" it looks like she's trying really hard not to cry at the end, because she knows she's not supposed to in the song.

Pink – Dear Mr. President (feat. Indigo Girls) Lyrics 17 years ago
Parts of this song I really like, especially the lines:

"Who do you pray for at night
before you go to sleep?" and "How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?"

Honestly, just because it's so true, and it really makes me wonder. Maybe just because when you're that far up there and so rich, you don't really have relationships with the single moms who work for minumum wage with a baby on the way (or the people who are practically starved to feed their kids) and you don't have to see so many people you are close to overdose on drugs or be shot or anything. Because those are the people some pray for at night so desperately before they go to bed. So how can he pray at night? Seems like his prayers would be distant and cold. I don't know.

However, I don't think P!nk "must have really had balls" to write this song. It's only what every other celebrity talks about all the time.

Also, who is P!nk to tell him he is neglecting the poor. How much money do you think she spends on helping? Yes, I'm sure she donates to charity, but really? She could do a lot more. She's got money and she spends it on luxery. Though, I do think she probably has seen poorer days than Bush, and seen a lot more of what she writes about in this song than Bush has.

Also, about the people saying "Bush does really work hard," yes, sure he works hard. I really think she's talking about a different kind of hard work, and there is a difference. It's more about working everyday so hard, all the while knowing if you don't work that way or if you lose that job, you have A LOT to lose. The president has everything he needs if he ever didn't feel like working.

Overall, pretty good song. Nothing real surprising from a mainstream artist, but not bad.

Frank Black – If Your Poison Gets You Lyrics 17 years ago
I could be wrong, but I think this song is about a guy who's friend or girlfriend uses drugs/alcohol. He's saying that if she overdoses ("if your poison gets you") he's praying angels will look out for her and he's saying he'll get there for her as soon as he can.

"Now once again to halls of pain
When will it end?
God's machines say it's your genes
When will it end?
Why has thou forsaken me, again and again?
You always said "When will it end?"
When will it end?"
^^I think this is sort of about the endless cycle of people using drugs and all the pain it puts everyone through
