To me it's more sad lyrics/uplifting music. In any case, I agree with this being an ironic song. Life can be beautiful, the day can be full of sunshine and nice, but you will remain alone and lonely. Having someone there to comfort you might be all that matters in the end. |

There is nothing ironic about it, since the song is actually about a Chinese guy building the railroad in the USA. He needs the money, but longs for his home and love in Hong Kong. He even has a picture of his girl with him, which he shows to his co-workers.

The singer is considering if he should finish his wreck of a relation, decides to throw it all away but, and I am guessing here, is perhaps also uncertain if he could ever get over her? At first the lyrics seem clear, but the more I think about them, the more interpretations I get.
Currently I think it might be about a relationship (any relationship, not specifically between lovers) that has gone awry, only the other person still cannot accept this and keeps living in the past, when all was still good. Might it be that the singer thinks the other to be responsible for this situation? |

I agree with AzraelUTD on the previous page.
When your lover cheats on you, or falls in love with someone else, you are taking part in some sort of threesome. However, you have become less and less interesting to your (cheating) lover, thus you are actually NOT taking part of the whole thing... There is no I in threesome.
Regardless of what Paul said, to me the song becomes so much better and more meaningful when taken like this. |

I think it's great if the lyrics of a song can be read in multiple ways. For me, as non-Christian, this song is not about God at all, but as several posters before indicated, about the beauty of life itself. I have looked at sunsets myself from my balcony, and know what Ed is singing about. Appreciate the world for what it is, you don't need others to tell you about it, just experience it yourself, it's wonderful! |

I also think it is about a murder. It could be that these lyrics are the thoughts the killer has a few hours after the killing, when the passion resides and the cold fact remains that he has taken a life.
Dew is of course also a sign of the early morning, so it could be that he killed her during the night and now, at daybreak, is thinking about what he has done. He is alone and rationalizing the act to himself. His loneliness is comforting him at the moment, because he can not face people now can he, being a murderer? So the early morning is his friend, and the dew is his sister.

This song perfectly voices the cynical thoughts one gets from being broken hearted. Sad but true, but these feelings somehow seem to stick around in me even when I have found a new love... and it hurts to have these sarcastic thoughts: Love Hurts indeed. |

Still a beautiful song I listen often after all these years. I think it is from the perspective of someone who is breaking up the relation. People seem to forget that most of the time this is a very hard thing to do: you still love the person you're breaking up with and don't want to hurt them, but you know you cannot keep this relation going either.
I really can relate to the second verse, sometimes the good memories do hurt more than the bad, they make you doubtful of your decisions. Shouldn't you try to make it right since you had so many good times? Sometimes it is easier to break up with a fight, because you have a clear reason then... |

To me it seems that the "Old House" is a metaphor of an old, long past relationship. Two old friends or lovers meet, many things have gone wrong in the past resulting in an uncomfortable situation where they don't know what to say to each other.
Since things cannot be talked over, they decide to just accept the company of each other, and it reminds the singer of how it used to be, and how he will always be affected by this long gone relationship ("We'll never leave, this old house"). "Every door is open" probably means that the two persons know each other very well and have no real secrets for each other.
It's a very comforting song in a way that it makes clear that how much you disagree, you will always keep certain feelings for each other and always can think of how it was, and comfort each other just by being together. |
