The Hush Sound – Hurricane Lyrics 16 years ago
Pretty straightforward... I absolutely love the non-cliche use of metaphor here.... the line "hurricane I'll never outrun" could be used so immaturely and obnoxiously, but since it's so well fleshed-out it comepletely works.
This whole song is just so good... that diminished vii in the chorus absolutely kills me. I think this is one of the best songs I've ever heard.

The Hush Sound – The Boys Are Too Refined Lyrics 16 years ago
The boys i mean are not refined
They go with girls who buck and bite
They do not give a fuck for luck
They hump them thirteen times a night
One hangs a hat upon her tit
One carves a cross on her behind
They do not give a shit for wit
The boys i mean are not refined

They come with girls who bite and buck
Who cannot read and cannot write
Who laugh like they would fall apart
And masturbate with dynamite

The boys i mean are not refined
They cannot chat of that and this
They do not give a fart for art
They kill like you would take a piss

They speak whatever's on their mind
They do whatever's in their pants
The boys i mean are not refined
They shake the mountains when they dance

It sounds to me like "haunted by the presence of..." but whatever, i don't really pay attention/have a lyrics sheet.

Simple Plan – Welcome to My Life Lyrics 17 years ago
I used to like this song until I realized, with creeping horror, that they were serious.

Cold War Kids – Saint John Lyrics 17 years ago
no, bkat004, this song definitely has an early rap/hip-hop structure to it - the drumming style, the predominance of the bassline, and obviously the vocal delivery, particularly with the emphasis.

Which is especially interesting considering the song is from a (presumably) black perspective.

LCD Soundsystem – New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down Lyrics 17 years ago
Probably the best song I've ever heard about being disappointed in a city.

Among the difference between the two versions is that one of them is faster - do you remember which one?

Cold War Kids – Hospital Beds Lyrics 17 years ago
This reminds me of the Hemingway story "In Another Country." I doubt it was based on it, but there are definitely several parallels.

One thing I will point out, though, is that in the story the characters are hooked up to these machines that they are told will fix their broken appendages - fingers, hands, knees, etc., but they learn that it is basically all a ruse/experiment/placebo at best. I just think this is interesting because it creates the possibility that the line "We've got no chance of recovery" doesn't refer to a terminal illness, but instead simply recovery for those particular ailments. Something to think about.

This must be the original version... it sounds SO much more natural. Love it.

Death Cab for Cutie – Steadier Footing Lyrics 17 years ago
What a wonderful way to open the album. Even though it feels (for obvious reasons) more like a closing song.

It just makes you feel good, you know?

Hinder – Lips of an Angel Lyrics 17 years ago
I can't think of a band I hate more than Hinder. I would argue that if Hitler were to rise from the dead, and start a polka band, I'd rather listen to that.

Yeah that's right. I said it. I like Hitler better than Hinder.

And I fucking hate Hitler.

Talking Heads – The Facts Of Life Lyrics 17 years ago
Where is the line about taking the good with the bad? Something about taking them both and then there you have the facts of life? I think these lyrics are wrong.

i'm not the kind of person who trashes other bands, but these lyrics are just ridiculous.

i mean that in a bad way. they're really shitty.

Elliott Smith – Everything Means Nothing to Me Lyrics 17 years ago
The eights aren't a coincidence. But not in the way I think you guys would like to think. Eight is just a very common, logical number in music. "Everything means nothing to me" has eight sylables because he's going up the scale in 8th notes, so it fits. After the eight repetition is a logical place to move forward with the song because we usually expect resolution in four or eight (usually eight, actually) repetitions. However, if it was called "figure seven" and everything matched with sevens, you might be on to something...

The Decemberists – The Mariner's Revenge Song Lyrics 17 years ago
"Don't know how I survived
The crew all was chewed alive
I must have slipped between his teeth
But, oh, what providence
What divine intelligence
That you should survive
As well as me"

For me, the song could end there. Not that I think it should (then we wouldn't have the part where he says he'll whisper "the last words you'll hear" and we hear the instruments singing the mother's melody) but I think the tension there is just so outstanding that I have to log on to songmeanings and blog about it.

Beyoncé – Crazy In Love (Feat. Jay-Z) Lyrics 17 years ago
Everyone who doesn't like this song because it is "another shitty pop song" should listen to the Magic Numbers' acoustic version. It is incredible, and no different than this minus more basic instrumentation, and they changed the F to a Dm to make it fit the new mood better.

This is a really good song (minus' Jay-Z's off-topic rap verse), and anyone who thinks it is another shitty pop song is trying to compensate for something.

TV on the Radio – A Method Lyrics 17 years ago
Artistic process is the theme I was feeling, too. Obviously, I'm not certain how everything plays into it, but here are some guesses.

Obviously, the whole method thing is artistic process; there being no formula.
The first two lines (suddenly everything flies by fine, mind goes on holiday) is that feeling you get when, god this sounds cheesy, but you really just feel whatever it is you're doing, whether it's music, or writing, or anything. It comes out.

I don't understand the curb thing, but clucking tongues, how could they have the nerve seems to be about the gall it takes to criticize other people's art.

I'm not gonna write anymore, but I think that's the basis for some discussion, hopefully.

Bright Eyes – Lover I Don't Have to Love Lyrics 17 years ago
"I asked your name, you asked the time."

Salinger? Catcher in the Rye? I think so. Which adds a whole different dimension to the song; for me anyways. Makes it less narrative, less a description of real events and more a personal explanation using references and metaphors and all that other good stuff.
