Sufjan Stevens – All of Me Wants All of You Lyrics 9 years ago
Such a beautiful song! Lyrics are kind of sad though. Sounds like it's about his relationship with a man (a certain Manelich?), someone with whom he has a strong physical connection: All of me pressed on to you, But in this light you looked like Poseidon... pretty straightforward in its homoeroticism.
But there's a disconnect. Manelich isn't a good communicator and Sufjan is having doubts - Now all of me thinks less of you - despite the good sex. I think that ultimately the song is about empty, lonely sex. Also, something is linked to his childhood summers with his mom in Oregon at Spencer's Butte, maybe through an old photo he saw, but I think only Sufjan understands how exactly the landscape changed his point of view.
This, paired with All For Myself, make a pretty strong case for Sufjan's sexual fluidity, imho.

The Smiths – The Headmaster Ritual Lyrics 14 years ago
Am I the only one who finds this song remarkably sexual? I just think the ending is filled with some kind of dirty lust - the howling is really sensual. The song sounds to me like there is a guy that Morrissey is in some kind of bad relationship with and he wants to go, he doesn't want to stay, but the nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh's are him expressing his urges. The lyric, "He does the military two-step down the nape of my neck." It's so god damn sexual. Someone back me up here.

It's "mais nous" - Sting just can't pronounce French for shit. But it's a great song. The French works well with the music.

Yeah, the CD booklet says "fat"

I've always thought the title was some kind of allusion to Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises". Maybe not.

Matt Nathanson – Still Lyrics 15 years ago
What an amazing song. The bridge where he just goes into falsetto is great - it feels like he's saying so much without saying any real words. That's the strongest part of the song, I think. There are some really well-written lines otherwise. I think this song is just about making love and it being perfect.

This is the most poetic song I've heard in a while. So beautiful.

The Beatles – Within You Without You Lyrics 16 years ago
This seems very informed by Buddhist thought. Does anyone know if George studied Buddhism at all? i know someone else mentioned Hindu. I don't really interest myself in Beatles history or factoids, but this song is great. I like Patti Smith's cover.

Bob Dylan – Tangled Up in Blue Lyrics 16 years ago
Not necessarily an analysis, but something to keep in mind - according to Spin or Slate (get the two confused), Bob wrote this song after "a weekend of drowning in Joni Mitchell's 'Blue' album". I think that adds a dimension to the song, or at least the sound/lyrical structure. It's about heartbreak.

The Weepies – Suicide Blonde Lyrics 16 years ago
i absolutely love this song.... is it "dye your hair, suicide blonde" or "dye your hair suicide blonde" cause that makes a huge difference in the meaning.

Love the line "you know the way you look makes everyone hungry"

I'm surprised nobody has said anything about this song. I think it's great commentary on the state of the U.S.

Fleetwood Mac – Rhiannon Lyrics 16 years ago
Obviously it has tie-ins with the Welsh folklore and everything, but the first few times I heard it, I thought it was about a prostitute? Maybe I'm just crazy or associating it with Roxanne too much. They're the best songs about girls (in the title).
"wouldn't you love to love her?
....
who will be her lover..."
I don't know, any opinions?

Courtney Love – Sunset Strip Lyrics 17 years ago
I love her Cali-centric lyrics. It's LA decadence with things just falling apart in the final third of the song. It's a tragedy, in some senses. I love how the song starts off like any other singer talking about being a celebrity (lyrically, at least). But at the end, after the final chorus, when she goes off for a few minutes and talks about all the pills she's taking, tomorrow's hot teen, rock and roll bitches, etc. This song is my number one most-played song on iTunes for a reason.
I love the lyric "Rock star, pop star, everybody dies." Brilliant. Clover is here to stay. Can't wait for her new CD.

Vanessa Carlton – Rinse Lyrics 17 years ago
"And as she runs away she fears she won't be followed.
What could be worse than leaving something behind?
And as the depth of ocean slowly becomes shallow,
It's loneliness she finds."
Those are my favorite lyrics on BnN, although this is my least favorite song. I love the lyrics. So potent, so transcendent. It's about letting go of an unhealthy relationship that you perceived to be life-giving, but it's about slowly realizing that you need to "rinse" it away.

I agree with previous posters that the "Fuck you!" is extremely powerful. I love that part of the song and how it's out of nowhere. Look at the context of that line, it gives me chills.

Joni Mitchell – All I Want Lyrics 17 years ago
I did a lyrical analysis of this song for my Faith and Sacraments class and related it to any relationship and how God is found in life-giving relationships. How we bring out the best in ourselves when we look for the great things God gives us. I'm not a very religious person, but that's one way you could look it. I don't think it's what the song means, I'm just throwing in that side of the song.
