CHIBI: It is a song about approval, success, and failure.
RAINBOW: It's about misdirected attention and credit. It's about building off the work of those who came before and claiming it all as one's own. The lyrics were initially inspired by the phrase 'standing on the shoulders of giants'. When I was in elementary school, if a student followed all the rules, did what they were told, or got a perfect score on a test, they were rewarded with a red star, which would be placed beside their name on a list of all the students in the class.

i think that when she "falls through the crack", it means whoever abused her is getting away with the atrocities they committed; her case has been overlooked, she won't be getting any sort of help. she's lost her faith in the justice system because no one has done anything to help her. |

I think it is about irrational fears..the 'little ones', children maybe, who are afraid of a scary story they were told...'Probably something you aid about a faceless head'..the fear is in the water, meaning it can just sort of leak away..its transparent... but it can still drown you...you know? |

The movie WAS kind of cheesey. The songs are even cheesier. For me though, the songs (and even the movie) are like a guilty pleasure. You like it, but you don't like to admit it. I never noticed the 6-1 countdown thing before. Its actually...clever. I have to admit I like it though. Good stuff. |

Actually, it says on the B-52's site that "tin roof rusted" doesn't mean anything. It's in the FAQ.

I got to thinking about it, and I thought maybe this was about child abuse ( "beat him up black and blue" ), and further more, kiddie porn. It's more likely about the media and celebrities, but I like to think there's a more creative story being told than more of that old rot.
Perhaps she's telling the story of someone who was forced into the world of child pornography when they were young, and in turn, as an adult, repeated those horrors to another child, or children; "Turn him into a video kid like you...", "We're only repeating, the motions preceeding..." See?
All that stuff about lying could be cover-up for the wretched things they're doing.
I don't know, I just wanted to try to view it from a different angle. I'm not trying to sound like a pervert or anything, but just read it again and think about it differently. It seems to fit. |

I was thinking about it, and I think the title itself is a metaphor for looking towards bigger and brighter things, but thinking about it hurts somehow, or the past still hurts maybe. Something hurts, because obviously staring to the sun is painful. Perhaps its hard to move on? |

Ooohh, discussion on whether or not Avril is punk. Fun stuff.
I don't know if anyone has said it yet, but um actually she doesn't write her own songs. I think she writes the LYRICS, but has musicians write the music. If you notice, all of the songs credit other people, not just her.
Her music is not punk. It is indeed pop. She may dress "punk", but her music doesn't reflect it much.
I do like some of her songs, but I don't call myself a fan, and I don't have much respect for her. She doesn't really sing well live either, so you know they have to warp her voice to make it sound better.
I don't really think she's that talented, and she's pretty much like every other pop artist out there - picked up by a major label and then marketed to make money. I could keep going, but god forbid a bunch of 12 year old ToTaLee HaRDxCoRe PuNXxX attack me on the internet. I just thought I'd voice my opinion. Bye now. |
