My Favorite – le monster Lyrics 17 years ago
For a long time, I thought the Polaroids were "dirty" because they were old, dusty, scratched, etc. But I think now that they're probably "dirty" in the sexually explicit sense. Maybe I'm just slow for catching onto that, but it changes the tone of the song to me fairly drastically. Before, I didn't really understand why this guy would send her old photographs -- but if he sends her sexual pictures (of himself, presumably), it's clear to me that he wants something different out of her than she wants from him. She wants letters from him while she's in the hospital, but he doesn't think to send them. She's probably in love with him, but either he doesn't reciprocate or he doesn't communicate his feelings well -- maybe he just doesn't understand that she wants letters.

I don't have much else to add. I think this is a mostly straight-forward narrative. "I miss my friends and I want to go home and I am tired of taking pills to make me feel better" -- pretty literal.

My Favorite – L = P Lyrics 17 years ago
Yes, I think the line "a crowd will form" is perhaps about the character's suicide -- but remember that earlier in the song, she pulls the fire alarm. Maybe this is just the crowd's reaction revealed later in the song for balance/repetition.

Wow, the number of comments to My Favorite songs is really depressing, haha.

This is, lyrically, my favorite Faves song, hands down.

Vienna Teng – Recessional Lyrics 17 years ago
Vienna has said that this song conveys "a love story told in reverse," and also that it was inspired by the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, haha!

I think the song made more sense to me personally before I started trying to piece it together backwards. I don't really understand -- if you reverse the verses, the story actually starts off with the couple feeling like they don't know one another anymore.

Regardless, it's absolutely one of my favorite love songs ever.

Vienna Teng – Unwritten Letter #1 Lyrics 17 years ago
The man referenced in this song was also part of the inspiration for "City Hall."

I love this song. If you get a chance, you should listen to a live recording -- in the one I have, Vienna just kind of dives straight into this stunning solo piano intro, rather than the low percussion from the studio recording. It's breathtaking.

Vienna has said that she wrote this song after falling in love "for the first time," and that in doing so, she was trying to create "a love song without the word 'love' in it."

I actually cried just reading your comment while listening to this song. I can't even describe the way this song makes me feel, and I'm not religious, either.
