Depends. Will you like me more if I do?

The B-52's – Follow Your Bliss Lyrics 15 years ago
This song reminds me vaguely of "Roses Are Free" by Ween.

Dire Straits – You & Your Friend Lyrics 16 years ago
It just occurred to me today that this song might be about a threesome.

Goldfrapp – Slide In Lyrics 17 years ago
I just heard this song today and it has to be one of the most hot-and-heavy songs I've ever heard.

The Cat Empire – Protons, Neutrons, Electrons Lyrics 17 years ago
I take from this one that no matter who you are or what you do, the simple fact remains that at heart we're all the same and one day we're all going to die, and so until that time, let's just enjoy our time with this earth and with each other ^__^

Such a beautiful, brilliant song.

Beulah – Silver Lining Lyrics 17 years ago
The song is a paean to Miles Kurosky's first musical love, punk rock.

Beulah – Popular Mechanics For Lovers Lyrics 17 years ago
The narrator is bitter because the girl he loves is running to the arms of a man who will not love her as much as he does, and he feels that it is her and himself that are supposed to be together. He acknowledges that they never displayed the chemistry or spontaneity that is needed to ignite the spark of romance, but wishes they could just forget about those failures and start fresh.

And of course, "some guy" = Stephin Merritt, composer and singer of most of the songs on the epic 69 Love Songs box set.

Brilliant song. I love this band to pieces.

Dire Straits – It Never Rains Lyrics 17 years ago
I think Knopfler laid it on a little too thick here. I mean, he always wore his Dylan influence on his sleeve, but in this song he's wearing like an entire suit made of Dylan. Worst song on Love Over Gold and definitely in the lower echelon of their discography on the whole.

Oh right, life in the streets, hard, rough, etc.

Dire Straits – Expresso Love Lyrics 17 years ago
Knopfler is totally biting Springsteen's style in this song, but that doesn't stop it from being a freaking amazing five minutes of music.

Dire Straits – Lady Writer Lyrics 17 years ago
Listening to it again for the first time in forever, I'm getting that the narrator wishes his girlfriend was as beautiful and intelligent as the woman he's watching on television.

Not one of my favorite DS songs - even though it was the big hit from Communique, I don't find it anywhere near the best song on the album, and the guitar bit at the end sounds like the underachieving little brother of the guitar bit at the end of Sultans of Swing. But it's an okay song, I guess.

Dire Straits – Heavy Fuel Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the main objective of the song is to lampoon the stereotypes of male machismo and libido, to kind of poke fun at all those guys who run on little more than the energy provided by sex, meat, and beer. One of those instances where turning a simple narrative description into a song helps underline the silliness of the topic at hand.

Semisonic – Closing Time Lyrics 17 years ago
Although Eamon provided the most official answer nearly two years ago (great memoir, by the way - highly recommended reading for fans of music), I still feel it bears worth mentioning that it is wrong to attempt to force a fixed meaning upon a song. Even if the writer of the song or someone in the band has his or her own concrete explanation of what the lyrics are supposed to mean, that's not going to stop people from ascribing their own meaning to a song, as it very well should not.

I had never considered the graduation angle, but I do like it and can see how moving it would be under that circumstance. The literal interpretation still works best for me, however. Closing time. Last call. Drink up and get out. You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here.

etc etc.

String Cheese Incident – Texas Lyrics 17 years ago
True story. The band got stopped by the fuzz in Fredericksburg, Texas on their way to Jazzfest in 1995, but the cops were obviously not the tallest trees in the forest, and so the band got away clean. (From the liner notes to Born on the Wrong Planet.)

Weird Al Yankovic – Genius In France Lyrics 17 years ago
Once I heard this song was a tribute to Zappa, I heard it clear as day. The guitar parts, the Ruth Underwoodian xylophone, the vocal stylings, numerous time and key changes, etc. One of Weird Al's best songs.

Phish – Dinner And A Movie Lyrics 17 years ago
The singer is suggesting to an unspecified party that the two of them should travel to an establishment that serves food and eat there, after which they should indulge in a few hours of entertainment at the local cinema. These activities are presumed to occur within the context of a date.

Ween – You Fucked Up Lyrics 17 years ago
The subject of the piece has erred badly. It is a very bad mistake this person made.

Again, we are told, she has committed an egregious error. Presumably, she is also promiscuous and harbors fascist sentiments.

The woman has taken advantage of the protagonist, for which he promises revenge. He reiterates the fact that she has acted and/or behaved improperly, then screams his discontent to the night sky.

String Cheese Incident – Smile Lyrics 17 years ago
I liked this song to begin with anyway, but it really hits home now that I live 400 miles from my girlfriend. It really is tough being so far apart from the one you love. We talk on the phone every day and I have her picture on my desk, but it's just not the same as visiting her, holding her, and seeing her smile. *sigh*

String Cheese Incident – Good Times Around The Bend Lyrics 17 years ago
Great song. This song has singlehandedly gotten me through more than a few rough patches. Great lyrics, and the instrumental breaks are infused with emotion too (love that accordion feature). Plus, its position as album closer on 'Round the Wheel is absolutely perfect. Grand slam.

The Beatles – Girl Lyrics 17 years ago
A literal interpretation sits best with me. This song fits a girl I once knew (and foolishly tried for over a year to pursue romantically) to a T.

I always thought the sucking in of air during the chorus gave the song a seedy barroom feel. Like the narrator is singing on a small stage in a bar trying to get people to listen to his story and feel his pain.

The Beatles may have written their fair share of odes to drugs but this is hardly one of them.
