I actually interpreted to be from the perspective of a teenager leaving home, with parents in an abusive relationship. I guess it's because of the "Every scream went bleeding through these paper walls" line, kind of made me think of "dance music" by the mountain goats..a kid sitting in his bedroom listening to his parents screaming at each other. |

also, I agree with maryjanegreengrass. I don't think it's necessarily about a break up, specifically. Just, the end of any relationship, which could just be a friendship. I think she's kind of talking about how, though it hurts, it's the best thing they could do. |

Though it isn't my favourite bright eyes song, it's one of my favourite sets of lyrics.
I think it's about how life repeats itself, and how we move on. We don't know what our purpose is, and sometimes life hurts, so it's about hanging on to the little things like smiles from strangers and the people we love.

My interpretation is really a combination of everything that has been said; the narrator is remembering a love, perhaps what was her idea of perfect love, which she had imagined beforehand?
