Conor Oberst – Breakfast in Bed Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This isn't Conor Oberst, it's Dntel featuring Conor Oberst. |
Conor Oberst – Cape Canaveral Lyrics | 16 years ago |
There's better stuff than the Youtube versions out there. |
Bright Eyes – Lua Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I've already expressed my opinion that this song will mean different things to different people, BUT Nk1: "Firstly, as someone else already mentioned, someone with bulimia would not generally be going to the bathroom repeatedly all night, as someone with a coke addiction would. " Actually, they might. Trust me on that one. |

Bright Eyes – Cartoon Blues Lyrics | 17 years ago |
inWonderland, I never really thought of it that way. At first when I read what you wrote I DEFINITELY wasn't agreeing with it, but then I thought about it for a second, and it actually makes sense. Like when you've finished smoking a bowl and there's just the ashes (powder) left. I still am leaning towards it being about coke, but I liked your explanation, too. :) |
Bright Eyes – Big Old House (Jesse Harris cover) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I definitely don't think it's about a dead person, because dead people can't 'say they're still the same'. I agree with willk's interpretation. You can listen to this song at http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/download/43585-bright-eyes-cat-power-big-old-house-its-alright-to-fail-stream I really love this song. |
Bright Eyes – Lua Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Okay, that line does NOT JUST HAVE TO BE ABOUT ONE THING. "You're looking skinny like a model With your eyes all painted black Keep going to the bathroom Always say you'll be right back" Conor's admitted to having eating problems throughout songs, 'your thoughts had always laid close to mine. we were both skipping supper' And he has also suffered from a coke addiction. To just stuff that lyric into whatever mould fits you best doesn't begin to describe it. There's such a thing as having double meanings. The lyrics aren't specific enough to narrow it down to just one thing, you're supposed to draw your own conclusions, but with an open mind. |
Bright Eyes – Hot Knives Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"I’m a cartoon, you’re a full moon, let’s stay up" my theory on the song cartoon blues was that it was about someone who was on drugs, and the cartoon being the drug world sort of thing. so then that line kind of makes me think of the guy in this song being on drugs, and therefore being unable to sleep, and the girl who is the full moon staying up with him. that's what it makes me think of. |
Bright Eyes – Soul Singer in a Session Band Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"Soul Singer in a Session Band is, just that. Just what it says. It can apply to anyone that's confined by their situation. That perhaps could be something greater, or more fully realized, but because of their lot in life, their circumstance, they're not able to get there" -Conor on Soul Singer in a Session Band. .. He called it that, he didn't say "Soul Singer in THE Session Band", so i don't know. |
Bright Eyes – Make a Plan to Love Me Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"Make A Plan to Love Me is a kind of romantic song. For any of you romantics out there. It's about a person that has a lot going for them, they're very busy. They have all these plans, and dreams, and schemes. They're really propelling themselves through all the hurtles of the world, but they're maybe neglecting nothing right beside them, which is perhaps more important than all these other things that they're keeping themselves busy with" This is from an interview with Conor. |
Bright Eyes – Hot Knives Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"Hot Knives is a song.. uhm, sort of about a woman that kind of discovers that her life is a sham and can't really exist in her reality any longer and has to transform completely into a new, uh, species. It sounds crazy, but it's not that crazy. It could happen to you, too" -Conor on the NME Track-by-Track |
Bright Eyes – If the Brakeman Turns My Way Lyrics | 17 years ago |
conor ALSO said this song is about hobos. and the train. and how they have no control over where they go, because the brakeman controls that. |
Bright Eyes – Southern State Lyrics | 17 years ago |
As well, the Azure Ray site says "Although they started out in Athens, Georgia, Maria and Orenda are now based out of Omaha, Nebraska, where they moved to take part in the growing music scene." So they ARE from Georgia. |
Bright Eyes – Southern State Lyrics | 17 years ago |
on motion sickness, i think.. conor says "this song is about athens. in georgia, not in greece." which would support the maria taylor theory. |
Bright Eyes – Clairaudients (Kill or Be Killed) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
yeah, he wrote that on the inside of the noise floor cd. |
Bright Eyes – A Song to Pass the Time Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"So let's hold up our fists to the flame in the sky To block out the light that is reaching for our eyes Because it would blind us It will blind us" to me the light refered to has always represented truth, and something pure and refreshing. the people of the suburbs are reluctant to grasp the truth (possibly about the insignificance of their life?), and then put up their hands to block them. they don't want to be 'blinded' by the truth, but would rather continue with a life of mediocrity. |
Bright Eyes – I Must Belong Somewhere Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"Leave the horse's hair on the slanted bow" my friend just explained to me that they use horse's hair for violins. |
Bright Eyes – Classic Cars Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"If I get out of California I’m going back to my home state To tell them all that I made a mistake" i think this is like.. if he gets to famous that he's living in california with all the celebrities who are so fake, then he won't have achieved what he wanted to. he would have made a mistake, which i agree with. |
Bright Eyes – Coat Check Dream Song Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"Coat Check and I lost the number" this is ironic, because i lost my number for coat check at the bright eyes concert in february. |
Bright Eyes – Something Vague Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"And I hang like a star Fucking glow in the dark For all those starving eyes to see Like the ones we’ve wished on" i think this is a biblical reference to the birth of jesus christ. when he was born, a star started shining over the place where he was laid, and everyone who wanted some more truth followed it. these people who followed it to me are like the starving eyes, craving some sort of meaning that the baby jesus hopefully brought their lives. that's just me, though. |
Bright Eyes – Cleanse Song Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i haven't heard this yet. i don't cassadaga sent to me until tuesday, and i'm trying to keep as much surprise as i can for the first time i'm able to hear the album. |
Bright Eyes – Four Winds Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"I'd got my rooker round her rot to stop her belting out death and destruction to the four winds of heaven.." -a clockwork orange. and then i googled 'four winds of heaven' and found ""And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth [stable society], nor on the sea [restless society], nor on any tree [right-hearted and more prominent of earth--Bro. Russell included the Household of Faith]." Revelation 7:1" http://www.revelation-today.com/WindsFour.htm read that, it's quite interesting. |
Bright Eyes – I Woke Up with This Song in My Head This Morning (The Bruces cover) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"So when the oven's hot, I'm gonna melt the plastic Into an ashtray or candy basket I woke up and put your record on this morning" 'put your record on this morning' works two ways. one is that he puts it on to listen to it. and the other is him putting it in the oven, to 'melt the plastic' |
Bright Eyes – I Must Belong Somewhere Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"Because everything - it must belong somewhere Just like the gold around her finger or the silver in his hair" this reminds me of a gold digger. the ring on her finger shows marriage, and the silver represents his old age. "Let the true genius in the padded room remain" all the people who are deemed truly brilliant have some sort of psychosis. for example, van gogh cut off his ear. |
Bright Eyes – Amy in the White Coat Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"Where you're a bag of warm fluid Where you're the corpse in the class" i think that shows this girl being ostercized from everyone around her. 'bag of warm fluid' meaning, different from everyone else, less human. it's like her father has dehumanized her. |
Bright Eyes – Make War Lyrics | 17 years ago |
that doesn't really make sense, though still. because the line before it says "But I'm not gonna bless you with such compliments, some degrading song of praise" .. i don't think god really sings songs of praise for anyone, unless conor's changing the perspective more than once in a stanza. during a concert he changed the line to "exchanging our infections through a drawer" , which i personally like better. "So we learn to be as faithless Stand behind bulletproof glass Exchanging our affections through a drawer It was always horribly convenient and happening too fast You should count your change before you're even out the door" definitely reminds me of a convenience store. it used to remind me of a prison setting, but when you read the final two lines of it, "it was always horribly convenient and happening too fast. you should count your change before you're even out the door." definitely refer to money exchanging hands at the easiest convenience. |
Bright Eyes – We Are Free Men Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i want this song played at my funeral, it's the most gorgeous piece of work i've heard in a while. |
Bright Eyes – Spent on Rainy Days Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"I wish I saved up for rainy days Because they're the hardest to be dry" literally: dry as in, not wet. metaphorically: dry as in, not having any drugs. .. it's hard to be dry and not have any drugs. |
Bright Eyes – Burn Rubber (Simon Joyner cover) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
charcoalsketch, i totally agree!! you can always tell conor's voice, but you can tell when they're not his lyrics, even though these are good, conor's songs are never this simplistic. |
Bright Eyes – Weather Reports Lyrics | 17 years ago |
HAHAHA. woah, that's weird. take it easy (love nothing) is quite a good song, though! it needs double recognition. |
Bright Eyes – Well Whiskey Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i think that when he gets whiskey from a well "Except on holidays, then it's the top shelf" i think the holidays is him going home, and the top shelf being where his parents keep their whiskey. holidays are usually a time of family, and i don't think conor is an exception to that, and the top shelf implies that it was hidden from someone. as well, "You still have bars on your windows and a hole in your door" seems to represent either some sort of psychiatric ward, or a prison. bars on the window to prevent escape, as well as a hole in the door, a small window, to be able to see what the person is doing inside. and synergyx, this song's on the Lua EP |
Bright Eyes – I Must Belong Somewhere Lyrics | 17 years ago |
http://www.kexp.org/aspnet_client/KEXPViewMediaGroup.aspx?rID=2525&pID=528&fID=539&artist=AI that's a live version, but it's all i have until i get cassadaga! |
Bright Eyes – We Are Nowhere and It's Now Lyrics | 17 years ago |
we are nowhere and it's now... 'we are HERE' take out 'now' in the word 'nowhere' |
Bright Eyes – Padraic My Prince Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"I saw the future once I was drunk in a phone booth" this reminds me of the catcher in the rye. holden was drunk and in a phone booth, about ready to pass out and calling some girl..who he sees himself having a sort of future with. |
Bright Eyes – A Line Allows Progress, a Circle Does Not Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i agree with all the people who have said this song reminds them of The Catcher in the Rye. i was just rereading that book, and then i put on this song and immediately noticed the connections. "As you try to find some source of light Try to name one thing you like You used to have such a longer list And light, you never had to look for it" Phoebe is asking Holden what he likes, and he can't seem to think of anything to say. "But now it's so easy to second guess everything you do Until all you want is to finish this half empty glass Before the ice melts away This feeling always used to pass But seems like it's every day Seems like it's every night now " Holden's excessive drinking, and his depression, which is getting worse. For an english report, we had to write a report connecting a song to the way Holden was feeling. and i used the song Hit the Switch, which isn't this song, but it just feels that Conor and Holden really have a lot in common. |
Bright Eyes – Reinvent the Wheel Lyrics | 17 years ago |
but at the same time, there's more to life than physically living. there are other ways to be kept alive. ..meh, i don't think anyone will ever know. |
Bright Eyes – Weather Reports Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"And the time clocks keep waving their hands Doin all that they can To get our attention" time is passing by, and we aren't paying enough attention, or living life the way we should because we're not concerned because we believe we have so much time. |
Bright Eyes – Devil in the Details Lyrics | 17 years ago |
conor says on tour that "this is a song about temptation. i don't know if you guys have ever fucked around with temptation before. it's a gnarly friend to have. it'll fucking lead you into some traps and it'll talk shit about you later, because you [don't give a fuck?] what happens to you. so that's basically it." i love the fact he used the word gnarly. |
Bright Eyes – Make War Lyrics | 17 years ago |
although that is an interesting take on it, the main thing that stands out "Conor went to a Catholic school, and so I think what he's telling himself is not to forget his roots. " Like the kind that converted YOU to ME so long ago..." you're converting someone to you. you're not converting god to you through songs. |
Bright Eyes – Make War Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Bright Eyes – Everything Must Belong Somewhere Lyrics | 17 years ago |
oh my god it was soooooo good live at the opera house! he was so passionate about it.(L) and, this song is listed as going on cassadaga, although technically i think it's called 'i must belong somewhere'. if you want to listen to it go here, conor played it at a radio interview, you can also listen to the whole interview, it's worth it. http://www.kexp.org/aspnet_client/KEXPViewMediaGroup.aspx?rID=2525&pID=528&fID=539&artist=AI |
Bright Eyes – Cartoon Blues Lyrics | 17 years ago |
and the cover also says that it's not 'drowned' it actually lis 'so i sleep with the fan on to drown out the street' he just doesn't enunciate. :) |
Bright Eyes – Cartoon Blues Lyrics | 17 years ago |
yeah, i have the cd sitting in front of me, and the line is "and the pop turned to powder" is "and the POT turned to powder" which makes that whole part make more sense. to me then, it feels like the powder is cocaine, and the people he was with don't condone that sort of behaviour. but by him asking to be excused he's using cocaine, which is disobeying them. ..and is it possible that from turning from a cartoon back into a man, he's coming off the drugs, and by coming off the drugs, he is starting to realize his surroundings and become aware of the 'human smell', and everything around it. |
Bright Eyes – Reinvent the Wheel Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i agree with the entire elliott smith thing. the song 'the biggest lie', by elliott smith, conor covered it and it's on the motion sickness record. and in 2003 conor also did an elliott smith tribute with a bunch of other artists. it's not just like someone said 'oh, it must be about elliott.' there are significant things leading people to think that, not just the fact that he is a dead guy. the lines 'the way your eyes would gloss over...', elliott smith was a heroine addict a large portion of his life. as well, elliott smith was depressed, mainly from the drugs, so the line "tried to breathe in meaning dig deep to every gasp of air.." refers to the depression. i understand that that could refer to any drug addict who was depressed, but the connections that conor had with elliott, as well as the fact that they were both born in omaha makes it more likely that it would be him than tupac. |
