NO comments on this Great Blues tune?? I never got all the lyrics right until now-when I'm seeing them written down. I saw Bob Live a few years ago. It was GOOD-maybe not Great, but I'm a Michigander.

@[Big:33713] Worm what they Also had in "Goodfellas" was "Sunshine of Your Love" by Cream; a band of such caliber that Classical Musicians Leonard Bernstein and Igor Stravinsky were fans(!)

Without taking anything away from Scorcese films, the soundtracks really MADE (pun intended?) his flicks. "The Bronx Tale" starts out with doo wop and later has "Come Together" by the Beatles. This was an anachronism, since the bar brawl was captioned 1968, yet the song came out a year later.

@[JumpyJack:33712] OK...I am officially an almost sixty year old nerd with no Life. I went through life thinking the lyrics were "Really should be rocking" and thought it was from the Disco Era-maybe on "Some Girls"-instead of "Sticky Fingers." That Bridge is Da BOMB...for me what stands out is all the Good Sax.

The Rolling Stones – Sympathy for the Devil Lyrics 4 years ago
@[DorianMode:33711] Yes!! I GET it now! I always liked this song better than "Gimme Shelter" which was dated, and referenced mostly Vietnam (although the soul singer doing the backing vocals was Astounding.) "...fought for ten decades over the Gods they made" gives it all away. Even Catholics and Protestants were burning each other at the stake in the Middle Ages and beyond. Interesting factoid: they had to change the song from "Kennedy" to "Kennedys" after RFK was assassinated in 1968.

Grace Jones – Pull Up To The Bumper Lyrics 4 years ago
I heard this song for the first time a few days ago, in the Teaser/Trailer for Season 3 of "The Deuce." It fits PERFECTLY. The Deuce is the Greatest HBO show that most of you aren't watching. It stars James Franco, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Margaret Leviva and others. It's about prostitution and pornography in Times Square from the 1970s to mid 1980s. Each season jumps seven years. There is a lot of Gay Pride stuff, and, AIDS will be raging in the final season. Maggie is AMAZING! Watch it for her alone. After the first season, I obsessively saw all of her major films (I had only ever seen her in "Crazy Heart" prior to that.) She is doing a movie with Ralph Fiennes about Frank Lloyd Wright and I will see it the day it comes out. I don't get HBO-I'm too cheap. So-how do I watch?? Hint: Arrggghh!!

Paul Young – Everytime You Go Away Lyrics 4 years ago
I dunno...it sounds a little Dirty-lol. Sort of like the Old Disney World TV commercial with the little boy and the Hot but prim and proper mom in the elevator. "And nine months after we left-I got a baby brother. Mom calls him her 'little souvenir!'"
(Mom blushes)
Well-I guess we ALL had a Great time!"

I always had assumed the lyrics to be about the Vietnam War ( a Good guess for that band and time period.) But-this makes sense, Too. Didn't know it was this old, either. It predates "Four Dead in Ohio" by several years (as does the 1970 Kent State Massacre, of course.)

I'm not a Huge fan of there's (except maybe "Highway to Hell" "Have a Drink on Me" and "Big Balls"-only played on FM stations late at night-lol.) But, "on your color TV screen" perhaps implies the Cowboy heroes of Old??

OH...and FYI-there's poetic license going on here. TNT is NOT Dynamite. They're two different high explosives.

The Band – The Weight Lyrics 5 years ago
@[just12:29708] If the song's backdrop is Nazareth, PA...how close is that town to Gettysburg?? All that talk about Cannonballs and Judgement Day makes me think of that-and other, bloody civil war battles. Also, remember that during the time period of all those Classic Rock songs, we were in a virtual second Civil War in this country. The Civil Rights movement, Vietnam War protests, Race Riots, and assassinations of JFK, RFK and MLK. The War between the States was referenced more than once. "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" Also performed by The Band and Jon Baez, comes to mind. Not saying I'm Right (I'm usually not) but, it's food for thought.

NO Comments?!? I mean, I'm a Hymie Honky KraKKa and this is the only one of their songs I even know! I listened to that one, along with "Nobody Move" by Big Daddy IU, and all the other rappers who were Big when I as a Medical Resident in NJ back in the early Nineties. The Inner Cities of the Reagan and Bush 41 years were a Crucible...but, that Crucible produced some Great tracks.

@[patobrien:28662] Maybe NOT, but I TELL you...the original Caddyshack was a DAMN funny movie!! The critics who panned it were Full of Shit.
As for the sequel-years later-well, Jackie Mason should be ashamed of himself. As a Jew, I am embarrassed. Sequels tend to Suck. "Analyze That" was a pale imitation of "Analyze This."

Greek Mythology?? Well.."Mind Playing Tricks" by The Geto Boys WAS a bit like Macbeth. In fact, on youtube, they show a "highlights" movie version of that play with MPT in the background.

And, speaking of "Greek" Eazy E died of AIDS. He got it the usual way. AIDS is rare in straight men in the First World. Heterosexual HIV transmission in Africa is because of untreated Genital sores-from Syphilis, and other chancre diseases.

Positive message (albeit tragic) but a bit too Mickey Mouse.
No subtlety, no allegory or metaphor.
"Love is Gonna Getcha" by BDP, and, of course "Mind Playing Tricks" by the Geto Boyz both much better (although I have personal beefs with Scarface)

I was a Nerd in High School (still am-always Will be) so I couldn't identify with the feeling at the time. But-THIS Blue-Eyed Soul Duo knocked it out of the Park with that Song (AND "Sarah.") My Late Father said that popular music was mostly "She Loved Me, She doesn't Love Me, or She Left Me." Well-of the 6.02 x 10*23 "She Left Me" songs, which probably go back to the beginning of Human Civilization, THIS one happens to be the Undisputed GOAT. I SAW them in Detroit two nights ago. They did most of their Standards, but NOT "Modern Love."

Well...In English classes, I was never too good at deciphering the Allegory of the Metaphors. (I'm only a Doctor-after all.) But, this Rock Waltz (which is actually a cover from another artist) reminds me in style of Neil Young's "Harvest."

Grand Funk Railroad – We're An American Band Lyrics 7 years ago
I'm a Michigander myself (Detroit area-GFR is Flint-based.) This song is sort of a combination of Skynrd's "What's Your Name"? and Seger's "Turn the Page." OK-TtP was much Darker. Maybe more a WYN and "Back in '72" Hybrid instead. BTW-there is a VIDEO associated with this song with the band hotdogging around on motorcycles. Rock Videos predate MTV!

Firstly, I went through life thinking this song was by Bruce Hornsby and the Range-until a soft rock DJ announced the singer all these years later. (But, then...I Also used the to think "That's the Way it is" was by Jackson Browne. I'm Funny that way.) OK-this song may be about a lost Love. But-doesn't it sound a little like Reaganomics or Segretation, Too?? You can build the Mansion-you're the Carpenter, painter, maybe, nowadays, the underpaid illegal alien, but you can't afford to live there. You can be a pool boy, but they won't let you swim in it, etc.

Unlike their Seventies Standards, THIS SMB Classic was written back in 1968. The Vietnam War, the Protests, the Chicago Convention Riots (not to mention the Bloody Riot there and in DC after MLK was Assassinated) the RFK Assassination, and the Radicals Not accepting Candidate Humphrey. NO MTV back then, but I can just SEE in my mind's eye, the Hippies, the Yippies, the Hell's Angels-ALL the Craziness.

I just Saw Eric Burdon (with his band "The Animals", not War) at the Windsor Coliseum two nights ago. He improvised "I was laying in a field of medical Mar-ee-Juana!" I think he's losing his voice-and possibly his Mind.

But, I have a theory that the Latino Lady voiceover inspired the Much Later Rap Classic "Buddy" "Oh Dios MIO-what are you DOING with that thing?....you can be MY Buddy ANYTIME!"

NO Comments on this song??

(Maybe because it's really a War (excepting Eric Burdon) tune.

I have a Theory that the 1990 Rap song "Buddy" was partially based on this.

Both have a Latino Lady talking over the lyrics.

The Animals – When I Was Young Lyrics 8 years ago
"I was so much Older then" Smart Lyric!

Points up the fact that when we are young and pliable we believe the Religious stuff we are taught (along with Santa and the Easter Bunny) but, also, we believe that our country is inherently Good, and pledge allegiance to the Flag and are Good Boy Scouts.

We tend to become Cynical and rebellious in the Teen years, and then more Conservative later as we age.

Yeah, it's an Urban Blight Song, like The Temptations "Cloud Nine" and Stevie Wonder's "Just Enough for the City" (OK-that was Urban AND Rural Poverty, along with Racism.)

But, it looks like the 'Nam Vets took it for their Own. In Contrast to the myriad Protest Songs (such as The Animals own "Sky Pilot") the Soldiers who were actually IN Vietnam fighting had their Own faves. Some, like "Incoming" Civilians can't identify much with. There was a similar Billy Joel Song. And I'm sure "Okie from Muscogee" was on their Hit List, too.

"Orange Crush" by REM was pruportedly about Agent Orange. And, YES, "Rooster" perhaps The Greatest Grunge song-EVER-was written by the AIC lead Guitarist-whose Father fought in the War and did Not discuss it for years afterward.

The Animals – Monterey Lyrics 8 years ago
I just SAW The Animals at Caesar's Coliseum in Windsor, Ontario (I'm a Detroit Yank.) Edgar Winters was the Opening Act.

They were LOUD (my ears are ringing two days Later) and folks who lose their hearing can lose Other things-such as their Mind. Burdon started with "Spill the Wine from his War Collaboration. He improvised a bit "I was lying in a Field of Medical Marijuana." I actually came of age in the Me Generation Seventies (Fleetwood Mac and Disco) so I was a snot-nosed cartoon-watching kid in the Sixties-Barely aware of Vietnam-and hadn't heard of Woodstock-let alone Monterey. But, MAYBE Monterey was the Better of the two festivals-or the THREE if you count The Stones Altamont Disaster.

THIS Song, Along with "T.R.O.Y." by C.L. Smooth, "Mind Playing Tricks" by the Geto Boyz, and some of the stuff by Public Enemy, are some of the Greatest Rap Tracks of the Early Nineties (Although the Front Men of the latter two groups said some Offensive Things publicly.) Tupac was a Genius, Too, taken Way too young.

In the Cauldron created by Reaganomics and Bushnomics these lyrical Diamonds were created.

Alabama and Mississippi, along with the Rest of the Old South, may have been Guilty of Worse, but Pulaski, TN was a Major Klan Town back in the Day. It must Also be said that Ethnic Neighborhoods in Chicago and Other Northern Cities were Very Violent in keeping out Blacks. Dr. King said so himself.

I DO like The Late Tupac, and Geto Boyz had at least THREE great songs! But THIS is the King of Old School.

"A Child is born with no state of mind blind to the ways of ManKind"

Best Line PURE Friggin GENIUS!! Interesting bit of trivia C Span had a lecture "From the Beetles (or Dylan?) to Eminim political lyrics" and they featured THIS song as a condemnation of Reaganomics (it came out in 84 on the cusp of his reelection. The song was so MUCH MORE than that..Great Stuff!)
