Chamberlain – Surrendering The Ghost Lyrics 15 years ago
i agree for the most part, but it seems like he's already out of the old relationship at this point, it's end is what put him in the "dark" in the first place, but he realizes there are others who need his love.

Chamberlain – Street Singer Lyrics 15 years ago
i think it's about a girl the speaker is fascinated with, a girl who's independent and aloof, "under lock and key" a "sovereign" nation. she's been through a lot in this town ("stay brave if your arbors fall) and needs to leave. the speaker is lamenting this fact, but realizes that she is unreachable emotionally if not physically and accepts it because he's "never been a thief" and leaves her to her sovereignty.

Chamberlain – The Simple Life Lyrics 15 years ago
this song just seems to be about leaving things behind in your life and moving forward from your youth. all the lines about staying too long and sipping the stars dry reinforce that interpretation. once the moments are past, all that's left are dark streets, hurt and memories.

i just threw that out there because this song needed to be commented on. seriously, it's been up for over six years, guys.

Descendents – Jean Is Dead Lyrics 15 years ago
i don't see how they could disagree with you... the songs called "jean is dead," so there's that much. he also says "why'd you do it?" a couple of times, even though it's not in the lyrics here. so she's dead, she did it, plain and simple.

Sunny Day Real Estate – The Shark's Own Private Fuck Lyrics 15 years ago
i don't see where this rumor that jeremy was a hardcore christian came from. maybe he was at one point, but i've never heard/read anything from his own mouth confirming it. i went to one of his solo shows in may and saw him smoking outside beforehand. he also kept a beer with him onstage at all times, so he's hardly a puritan even if some of his lyrics can be interpreted as expressions of faith.

Jeremy Enigk – Dare a Smile Lyrics 16 years ago
everything you've said seems accurate. "kick and feed on this rope, oh no" makes me think of an umbilical cord, like he wants to crawl back into the womb (like you said, the simplistic, the beginning, etc.) where he is safe ("can i run back to you?"). literally or metaphorically or both.

Sunny Day Real Estate – Two Promises Lyrics 16 years ago
i agree with almost everything that's been said already, just wanted to add something about the title. the two promises are promises of love, being together, etc. "two promises, one imperfect." he kept it, she didn't.

Division Day – Catch Your Death Lyrics 17 years ago
a few lines i'm unsure of: "flaming ovary" or "flaming over", it sounds like the former the first few times, but after that the y disappears. also "the curtain coming down again" versus "the current climbing down the bed". i think it might be the second one in this case, since it could be a flame current moving down the bed, which fits with the line "my quilts they catch the fire". finally, is it "the wedding life" or "the waiting life"? does anyone know if the liner notes include lyrics? the website says the album's out of print.

Papercuts – John Brown Lyrics 17 years ago
john brown is that radical aboilitionist in civil war history books known for the pottawatomie (sp) creek slaughter of five pro-slavery whites and the failed harper's ferry raid in virginia. he was captured and hanged for treason. he was also crazy. and a religous fanatic. that should be enough to make sense of the song.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Over and Over Again (Lost and Found) Lyrics 17 years ago
it seems to be about sex. "sigh, a little die (un petite mort is french for an orgasm), no more a child, goodbye." then the whole dimming the lights stuff, "have you nothing new to show me?", and starting fires. of passion. i don't know.

The Smiths – The Hand That Rocks the Cradle Lyrics 17 years ago
i get the idea that it's about a father separated from his son, whose mother never knew who the real father was. maybe he runs into the kid on the street and recognizes his eyes. then he returns to the house later and kidnaps him so that they can be together.

on the live version from the tod website, he introduces this song as "a love song for the people without love".

...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead – Stand in Silence Lyrics 17 years ago
seems pretty straightforward, but i'm commenting anyway because the song is just that amazing. i like the lines "gone to rot" and "blood turned sour".

...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead – Sunken Dreams Lyrics 17 years ago
sunken dreams could be dreams never realized. so this song is probably about a failed relationship, like most songs. this one sounds a lot like the cure. i love the choir at the end. maybe if someone posted the full lyrics, someone other than me or the person above me, then it would be clearer to interpret.

Jeff Buckley – Dream Brother Lyrics 17 years ago
the imagery in this song is ungodly. the best i've ever seen or heard. every line is perfect. butterscotch and black feather wings and the ocean washing over.
