The Boy Least Likely To – Be Gentle With Me Lyrics
| 16 years ago
|
Lied awake, waiting like a target
Listening for things I cannot see
Insects flutter up against my window
I don't like the way they look at me
Yeah, so once I took an otc drug that gave me a panic attack, and I started thinking that the sound of bugs brushing up against the screen of my window was ACTUALLY the sound of an intruder, so this line totally cracked me up. |

Joanna Newsom – Sprout and the Bean Lyrics

Am I the only one who interprets this song as a woman reflecting on a troubled relationship? She complains about it and shuts herself away from everyone. However, she still loves him. I believe that "When you go away, I am big boned and fey" is a creative way of saying "I feel like I'm not as good of a person without him." |

The Innocence Mission – Tomorrow On The Runway Lyrics
| 17 years ago
|
I always thought this song was about a search for Jesus. Sometimes we may feel like we're alone in this sad kind of world, and we're just crying out for God's love. Then we gradually see God's love everywhere. However, I personally think of this song when I think about past relationships. I sort of had to stop listening to it because I related it with separation and loneliness. I love the line about coming alive on the "leaf-bright Friday night." It reminds me of the going out with friends or romantic interests on the weekends. A little bit of high school in there, I guess. |

The Magnetic Fields – A Pretty Girl Is Like... Lyrics

I first heard Irving Berlin's "A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody" during my awkward preteen years. The superficial flavor of the song kind of disturbed me. "Am I pretty enough to say in someone's head all day?" That's why I love this song. |

M. Ward – Post-War Lyrics

Does it sound like Billie Holiday at the end of the song, or is it just me? I looked up whether she'd ever sung anything with the words "Some Lucky Night." What came up was this fabulous song called "Travellin' Light," but when she says "Some Lucky Night" it sounds nothing like the "some lucky night" in this song. Check out "Travellin' Light" though. |

Nat King Cole – Stardust Lyrics

One of my favorite songs. The melody was written while Hoagy Carmichael was walking across Indiana University's beautiful campus in the 1920s. It was originally meant to be a faster, jazzier number. The words were added later, and I think he originally recorded the song with lyrics in 1929. It doesn't have the first two stanzas, and it's pretty bare compared to this recording. The vocals aren't as smooth as this one's, but there's an awesome whistling solo and a simplicity to it. |

The Album Leaf – Over the Ponds Lyrics

You guys might like this. It definitely describes how I feel about the song. How effective can it be when you think he's saying "shoeside, lookout"?

El Perro del Mar – Party Lyrics

I listen to this song when I'm getting ready for a social situation I'm not sure about. THEN, when it goes better than expected, I can think back to how I felt when I was listening to this song and be like, "See? It was okay!" |

Nico – These Days Lyrics

I think it's "life I've made in song," not "sob." I think this is my favorite song. I heard that neither Jackson Browne nor Nico were pleased with this version, but I love it. It just sounds so warm and reflective. |

The Hollies – The Air That I Breathe Lyrics

Since it hasn't been said yet, this song is A LOT like "Creep" by Radiohead. Just think, if this song hadn't been written, then perhaps we would never have heard of Radiohead. |

Ray Charles – Georgia On My Mind Lyrics

Hoagy Carmichael wrote this song about his sister apparently. I dig Hoagy Carmichael, but I agree that it's better when Ray CHarles does it. |

The Beatles – It's Only Love Lyrics

I don't think the lyrics are all horrible. I mean, getting butterflies is kind of silly and all that, but once it gets past that the lyrics aren't too bad compared with a lot of other pop at the time. |

Enya – Orinoco Flow Lyrics

This was my first favorite song ever. I remember being VERY young and my dad playing this song during dinner on a cassette. Although I personally think new age is a silly genre, Enya is totally underrated. |

Devendra Banhart – Santa Maria de Feira Lyrics
| 17 years ago

I think Devendra said that he feels more comfortable writing simple love song lyrics in Spanish than in English. It's a beautiful song. This is the kind of song in which I think he's channeling Caetano Veloso rather than Marc Bolan. |

T. Rex – Life's A Gas Lyrics

I think Pitchfork described Bolan as being accidentally mystical and poetic, and I kind of have to agree. How do you love a girl like a planet? I don't know, but I think that's a great line. |

Neko Case – Wayfaring Stranger Lyrics

Other versions of this song include more references to God and the afterlife. However, this song is lovely because it does allow the singer to explore a more secular path with its message. |

I don't understand some of these expressions. Is this vocabulary common in the south, or are some of these words and phrases only used in rap songs? |

Iggy Pop – China Girl Lyrics

I think this version is really beautiful and sounds very rich. I like it a lot better than Bowie's version, although I think Bowie's version is easier to understand. This is so glam, I love it. |

U2 – Window in the Skies Lyrics
|
This is kind of embarrassing, but until this song I didn't know U2 wrote a lot of music with a spritual theme. I guess I just hadn't listened closely to the lyrics. I heard the song and I thought, "Is he saying, 'Can't you see what the Lord has done'? Wow!" So it turns out those aren't the lyrics, but the important thing is that I learned more about U2. |
