Amanda Palmer – The Bed Song Lyrics 14 years ago
i reckon you're close

"someone upstairs has a rap that we laugh at
and people are drinking and singing the scarborough fair
on a ukelele dare."

scarborough fair is a traditional english ballad about a pair of young lovers, the man sets a series of tasks for his lady that are impossible; making a shirt for him with no seam, washing it in a well with no water. it's supposedly an adaption of an old scottish song about an elf.

this song is stunning.
i guess it's not too difficult to pick apart; i think most of us can say we've been there; in a situation where things go so long without being said that they eventually blow out of proportion and finally lose all meaning, and the humanity of it whereby we'll let something go because we're too afraid to communicate.

communication is often a strong vein in amandas songs.

Amanda Palmer – Dear Old House That I Grew Up In Lyrics 15 years ago
i'm pretty sure it's actually "fill you up and heat you".
otherwise the remark about the oil is kind of irrelevant.

The Dresden Dolls – Backstabber Lyrics 17 years ago
and to perfect scars;
well done pet.
but the line i think is more like "if you've got the answer tell us, share with the rest of the class"

ie, an implication that the whole thing is so childish it could be taken back to grade school.

it's not about gwen fucking stefani.

there's a live mp3 floating about explaining the meaning but i only half listened.

and it's about an old friend who turned his back when they signed to a label.
an older version of the song [which is popularly available to download though it's poor quality] has a line in the bridge about "think you're so much better, think you have the answer, why isn't it what you do? why aren't you up here you fucking backstabber?"

Cyndi Lauper – Sally's Pigeons Lyrics 17 years ago
Cyndi comes from a jewish background and Sally, is a boy. Not the friend with a pirate smile.

The song is about a strong friendship between two young girls who always rush out to watch this boys pidgeons flying.. And one day, her friend falls for a boy across the street [Someone shy and tall] and weeks later she tells Cyndi that she's late - her period.

The back alley job, I think, refers to the back street abortion. At the time the song is set, abortion was illegal. Cyndis friend dies after it.

"she left one night with just a nod
was lost from some back alley job"

she left one night after telling Cyndi she was going for an abortion and she was never seen again. I figure she died.

pretty sad all in all.
