It's pretty clear he's saying "Are the best of his life," not "were." The song seems to be about unfettered freedom, and how scary it can be. Sure, there may be negative consequences, but ultimately, those negative consequences are worth an untimely demise. Then the parallel between people trapped in their given situation versus embarking on a new journey... John Vanderslice is awesome.
