The Dead Milkmen – Punk Rock Girl Lyrics 12 years ago
The couple in this song are horrible parents. They have a child, name it Minnie Pearl, then travel the world without it!

The Cure – Friday I'm in Love Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is really about a guy whose girlfriend died and now he's miserable. You can read the entire thing here: http://whatthefuckamerica.blogspot.com/2011/05/friday-im-in-love-one-mans-mental.html

But to put it simply, she died, and he spends the week crying about her, and on Friday he starts drinking and then the whole weekend is a blur. Saturday, wait? Yeah, it's going by too fast.

TV on the Radio – Robots Lyrics 13 years ago
From the way it sounds in the song, this song references a Google search. i.e. you type in one thing, "robots fucking", and then you get that thing doing a ton of things. It seems consistent with the consumerist media message someone mentioned above.

Type in something you want in Google - robots fucking - and you might end up with all of these crazy random things or versions of what you want. Same applies to youtube or anything else.

This song embodies Nickelback's entire existence: macho assholes with misogynistic views about women.

Billy Bragg – There Is Power In A Union Lyrics 14 years ago
You must not live in America. The only way to get rewarded is to have a union or some how "get in" with the top tier people.

It's like that a lot of places... Hard work doesn't pay off. Banding together or kissing ass does.

NOFX – Please Play This Song On The Radio Lyrics 14 years ago
It is "f-word", because it does take a pause... Before he sings the f-word. It's a double joke. A lot of bands that wanted radio play, if you listen to the song, there's a little bit of space between lyrics so the radio can bleep the f-word. Also, this song ends falsely and then starts back up, and in the second part, he sings the f-word.

Elvis Costello – Everyday I Write The Book Lyrics 14 years ago
I think he's not as easily accessible as many artists because he covers so much territory in his writing. He's not really "popular" anymore, and for people who are getting into non-mainstream rock or pop, he's probably not going to be a direct correlation to anything they like. i.e. kids getting into emo or punk or indie rock - if they trace it back enough, they might get into his earlier stuff and eventually like his overall catalogue like many people do, but it's not very likely. If the internet and this site had existed in the late 70s and early 80s, I'm sure he'd've had many comments as he was quite popular then.

It could also be about rough sex.

Elvis Costello – I Want You Lyrics 14 years ago
I listened to this song for a week straight after finding a girl cheated on me. It helped me get by pretty well. I also just found out that this girl I'm seeing was hanging out with her ex (and he's pretty upset that she moved on) and this song came on and it crushed him. How meaningful this song must be to crush somebody's soul like it... I dunno, it certainly just helped me cope with my issues. I guess everybody handles things their own way.

The meaning behind it is pretty clear, though. It's clearly about a jealous ex-lover of some sort who just wants the person back and can't have them back.

Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros – Yalla Yalla Lyrics 14 years ago
Joe stated that this song was about some sort-of law outlawing dance parties or some such. Hence the "tae kwon do moves" - sometimes that's how people dance.

And the "So long liberty", obviously feeds into something being outlawed.

Modern English – I Melt with You Lyrics 14 years ago
Stopping the world is simple... Destroying the planet in a nuclear holocaust is "stopping the world". It's not literal... It's a metaphor. Time is stopping... The human race is stopping... Progress is stopping.

The Jesus and Mary Chain – Just Like Honey Lyrics 14 years ago
This is totally about a failed relationship and unrequited love. The "plastic toy" line is the guy being so desperate to be with the girl, he is saying she can use him for nothing more than sex, and that would be okay with him.

Buzzcocks – Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've) Lyrics 14 years ago
Pete Yorn's version is pretty great. I've been a Buzzcocks fan since the early 80s when I was a wee child, but Pete Yorn's version was awesome the first time I heard it in Shrek 2 (was it Shrek 2?), and I still love that version. Not as great as the original, but it's pretty good.

Talking Heads – Road To Nowhere Lyrics 14 years ago
As everybody says, this is about the futility of life and struggle... But it takes a cheerful perspective... i.e.... keep going.

But it seems to be also about how you can make things better (the future is certain, give us time to work it out).

Its inclusion at the end of the film "Religulous" was pretty perfect.

The Jam – Going Underground Lyrics 14 years ago
I doubt this song will ever lose relevance. While it may've been written in the late 70s about the UK, it's just as relevant about any of the super powers of the world when it comes to the talk of rockets, guns, and nuclear arms. And it's still relevant 30 years later. That makes this a great song (besides it just being awesome). Anything that stands that test of time and is still relevant is something that is well-written.

New Order – Age Of Consent Lyrics 14 years ago
_aeronautical's response makes the most sense, about an older woman and a younger man...

...which also makes it funny that a cover version of this song appears in Wayne's World II during part of a scene that spoofs The Graduate.

New Order – Love Vigilantes Lyrics 14 years ago
I can't believe anybody thinks this guy survived.

The entire chorus is about how lonely he was that he had to get home to see his family. He was so lonely that as a ghost, he single-mindedly wanted to see his family - so much that he got on a plane and "flew across the sky" to his home. Only when he read the telegram did he realize that he was dead and it hit him hard.

After that, the chorus repeats to reiterate the point: he didn't realize he was dead because all he wanted was to see his family.

Elvis Costello – The Imposter Lyrics 14 years ago
Zubby is most-likely correct, but I'd like to add that the girl is probably a virgin (or, at the very least, isn't into seducing guys she's not dating, etc), as suggested by the "you've never been this far, you've always been too smart".

I actually think that Deceptacon might've been a response to this song if it indeed came second. This song is an attack on Hanna's person and lyrics. The obvious reference to FM in Deceptacon is the "who pu the bomp", a reference to an old song which was covered by... Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, another band FM is in. She's definitely calling him out in Deceptacon.

Billy Idol – Dancing With Myself Lyrics 15 years ago
If this song is about masturbation at all, it's not completely about it. It'd be about how he TRIES to get laid by tje kind of girl he likes, but he can't find her, so he ends up "dancing with himself" i.e. masturbating. He can never find the girl he wants and needs.

Bad Religion – Don't Pray on Me Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm a little late to the party here, but "Jack" is often another name for "John", so Jack (as someone asked) refers to JFK, whom did indeed "do it to Marilyn" and "South Vietnam".

The Cure – Killing an Arab Lyrics 16 years ago
"mandc" is correct. The entire book revolves around absurdism, an existentialist philosophy about how you cannot find true meaning in most things. The character doesn't care about who he killed, really. During parts he tries to justify the killing by saying the sun was in his eyes (staring at the sun). In the end, he lives for truth and justice, no matter how odd that is... He tells the absolute truth, knowing that he might even be executed for it.

Also, to the character, nothing matters (absurdism argues whether or not life is worth living, since there is no meaning), it's right in the song: "Whichever I choose, it amounts to the same... Absolutely nothing."

Television – Venus de Milo Lyrics 16 years ago
timothyreal said: ``I like how Tom pronounces the wrod 'Milo. I guess he says it so it rhymes with "feel low." ``

Well, it's not technically mispronounced. The statue is actually Greek and was called "The Aphrodite of Milos" (Milos being a city). The correct way to say Milos is "Mee-Lows".

This song makes me happy in general, it's a good melancholy song overall.
