Awesome song! This album has been getting flack for straying from their roots and the reggae sound but I don't think it strays too much. I like the new sound and lyrically this album is awesome for speaking of how things begin. This song in particular seems to be about living now and not worrying about anything because eventually things will end but other things will begin anew. And it's just amazing that life is happening. |

I didn't feel like reading through all those pages of meaning. Kind of crazy to see all that being put down about the song, but cool. I've heard Jesse sing both 'alkaline' and 'incline' live. As for the bird part. The line doesn't make sense as "You're my favorite bird, and when you sing" It seems incomplete and doesn't flow into the next line properly. Honestly, after much listening it sounds like "You're my favorite burden, when you sing". It would make sense if this song was about his relationship with the chick from Eisley. Let's be real, most of this album is about that and death. He was so down and out about the whole thing it would make sense. |

There's a lot of excess words in the lyrics that don't need to be there. For example the first line is simply, "All my life, treading paper in the space between the words."
scbaseball12 is pretty spot-on for the most part. This song is pretty easy to grasp. Despite the dark themes it ends on a hopeful note which is really nice. Dustin is definitely of the Christian faith but this song is overall very spiritual and not necessarily Christian. I'm practically Buddhist and I can connect with this song on a pretty deep level. That is the beauty of Dustin's writing.
For anyone who still doesn't get it let me put it simply. Live by your hearts and what you FEEL is right! Just for a second consider that maybe what American society and culture are spewing aren't necessarily the best things for humanity in the long-term. Try as you might but science CANNOT explain everything. What do you feel? |

When I lost all hope to *LIVE
I'd consider the other corrections too. But for the most part this is pretty correct right off the bat.
To me this song is about doubting your faith. Feeling like there is no hope but then finally finding it just before you truly hit bottom. Considering what these guys have gone through in the last year while this album was being made, it makes sense that they'd write so much about a good and evil. A push and pull of light and dark. Major and minor chord changes throughout. This song is clearly one of their best. If not all-time then definitely for this album. It's a universal feeling. We've all doubted our faith in times of hardship.
The last line of the chorus always brings a tear to my eye. |

There isn't much to the lyrics and because of this the meaning seems vague. This whole album lyrically seems more vague than previous releases and Dustin has spoken on this in the vinyl liner notes. This song is about how our lives are filled with choices, both good and bad, and like a coin in the air we must call it out/make a decision. Seems to me that it's about our potential to make good choices in this life. |

Dustin said in his interview with Alt Press that this song is a conglomeration of seven different Thrice songs. He mentioned The Weight, Trust, and In Years to Come. It's about his relationship with his wife but it could also be seen as a love for God and whatnot. I think anyway. |

He's pretty much saying how all these girls are dying to look so beautiful and they do shit to make themselves look hot like buy makeup or new clothes and they just look really fake. But in doing all this to get hot, they attract the wrong kind of attention and they'll probably get raped for being so hot. So was wanting to be hot worth all that. This is pretty genius. |
