The Mountain Goats – Psalms 40:2 Lyrics 11 years ago
All I've ever heard John say about the song is that it's about desecrating a church and not delving much deeper into it than that. It seems like he always makes a point to leave the interpretation of his songs to his listeners instead of blatantly spelling out his own intent.

He's said many times that he used to be a Catholic but now, he definitely isn't and definitely doesn't believe in God so his meaning for the song is definitely different from the meaning I get from it.

But to me, it's about desecrating a church in a sense of abandoning the corruption, the hypocrisy, and false doctrine. It's a song about mysticism, about saying "forget what people tell me about God. They may be right, they maybe wrong and maybe the way God works for them isn't the way he works for me. I will learn first hand from God himself." A song about people fed up with whats been given them trying to find the answers themselves. They certainly don't have them, but they thirst. deeply.

the song's basically like "your mom gets raped to feed you so don't complain about eating vegetables."

The Mountain Goats – Dilaudid Lyrics 12 years ago
This song reminds me of a part from Twelfth Night.

"What is love? ’tis not hereafter;
Present mirth hath present laughter;
What’s to come is still unsure:
In delay there lies no plenty;
Then come kiss me, sweet and twenty,
Youth’s a stuff will not endure."

I love this song.

I must have listened to this song a hundred times and just now really heard the last verse. Did he stalk and kill a girl with cancer in the middle of the street and then listen to music until the cops showed up?

wtf? that's frikkin dark!

Every time I hear this song, in my head, I see Jason Webley with two ponytails in a conjoined twin suit with Amanda Palmer.

these lyrics are really wrong. For instance:

I'VE BUILT a bridge across the stream of consciousness
THAT always seems to be a-flowin'
but I don't know which my brain is goin'
all the rhymin' and the timin'
keeps the melodies inside me
and they're CLIMBIN' til I'm runnin' out of air
are you prepared to take a dive
into the deep end of my head?
are listening to a single word I've said?

and

WHEN it's time to get ill

...among other mistakes.

Jason Mraz – All Dialed In Lyrics 14 years ago
This is seriously one of the most beautiful songs he's ever written. Jason and I don't always agree idealogically, but the interconnectedness of all things is something I wholeheartedly agree on. Plus the musicality of it all kicks but.

OK Go – It's Tough To Have A Crush When The Boy Doesn't Feel The Same Way You Do Lyrics 16 years ago
The song sounds to me like some kind of satire. I'm not sure what it's a satire of could be emo bands, could be adolescent girls, Idunno. But it has a really jocular, almost condescending tone to it.

Weezer – Only in Dreams Lyrics 17 years ago
Their drummer is seriously underrated. no one even mentions the drums but they're really what you feel when you listen to the song. I'm a total non-drummer and I still think so.

maybe this song is about an Oedipus complex

Weezer – Only in Dreams Lyrics 17 years ago
It's interesting how Weezer has made one of my absolute least favorite songs and one of my absolute favorite ones ever.

"Hash Pipe" is a boiling sack of horse crap that grinds my soul and then there's "Only in Dreams"

The first time I heard this I thought it was just ok and, being a bass player, I always think of how boring it would be to play the song. But despite its simplicity, the bass line has a really cool, mellow, chocolaty sound to it that really fits like the spine of the song.

The drumming is what gets me the most actually, it's truly amazing and is the real driving force behind the song. it's total euphoria.

the guitar solo at the end really IS like an orgasm how it builds up, then gets really intense then the intensity drops suddenly and everything fades out. I love it!

I don't believe the rumors of the song being about pot because, seriously any song love can be interpreted to be about weed...especially by someone who smokes weed.

I don't...but I know.

Jason Mraz – Older Lover Undercover Lyrics 17 years ago
I always took it to be about a woman who is really mature for her age which is why he said her idprobably was fake and she's wearing a costume. but then I heard Mraz say it's about a woman who wants people to believe she's younger and I don't get it.

like, why would she look young? ...anyway, I like my interpretation better.

Jason Mraz – Absolutely Zero Lyrics 17 years ago
it's the classic story of getting drunk and having sex with your female friend and not wanting to commit later so he pulls out lame excuses like "I have to work and travel and stuff".

that's how I see it.

either that or just breaking up and getting blamed for all the relationship problems abd then you're like "why is none of this your fault, you dirty slut!!?!??" I sense a lot of anger in this song ironicly depicted through a mellow melody.

Reel Big Fish – Drunk Again Lyrics 17 years ago
a friend of mine, his sophomore year of highschool had been dating his girlfriend for over a year and he drank (drinks) a lot despite being underage, gets drunk, and gets into trouble while drunk 'cause he's kinda retarded and has a habit of doing retarded stuff all the time. His girlfriend had a problem withthat and was like "you drink too much, you need to cut it out." they were partof the stage crew at our highschool and one day after a bunch of arguments and stuff about drinking, he and some other friends decide to get drunk backstage during some kind of show so his girlfriend gets pissed and breaks up with him.

and I was like that's a lot like the song 'Drunk again' by Reel Big Fish. that's what this song means to me.

Jason Mraz – 0% Interest Lyrics 17 years ago
There are so many parts in this song, there arelike 500 different pieces of symbolism. it seems like nothing in his songs are ever meant to be taken literally.

heres some of what I got out of it:
The "little sister" part doesn't mean it's actually about his sister I think it illustrates the closeness of the relationship like in the Song of Solomon when Solomon refers to his lover as "my sister, my spouse" it was a metaphor, they weren't anywhere close to being related, they weren't even the same race, but he said it.

The rock of gibralter symbolizes invulnerability

thumb print= impression

unencumbered, I think is used incorrectly but he uses it as a refrence to a girl he dated whose favorite word was unencumbered.

I really don't get most of it, there's too much... but if I knew all the words, I would write myself out of here and if I was all the colors I would paint you pretty and gold in a picture.

Jason Mraz – 1,000 Things Lyrics 17 years ago
I think theres another song or poem or something with a similr theme but I can't think of what it is...

it's all about how after meeting this person nothing else seemed very significant anymore, like they might as well not even exist. that's how glorious this one person is; she just outweighs thebeauty of all else. at least that's how I see it.

Jason Mraz – Please Don't Tell Her Lyrics 17 years ago
sounds a lot like my life...

This song is mainly metaphorical, comparing love to a football game (or some similar sport). He says things like "she's kicking-ass across the board", "she's taller than I am", and "She was the girl with the broadest shoulders" symbolize she's like the star player and far more successful/wanted romantically than he is.

He seems to refer to himself as the bench warmer. "I coldn't play again.......never let me in to spend my quarter"

this is also about him not wanting people (especially her) to realize he's one of her countless fans. and also trying to convince himself, through reverse-psychology not to keep pining over her.

It took me kindof a while to figure this out 'cause at first I thought, 'dang, she sounds hideous'.
