The Shins – Split Needles Lyrics 17 years ago
The alternate version for this song is on the Phantom Limb single. It is much faster paced, and I feel that it better suits the frustration that James seems to be expressing in the lyrics.

As far as comparisons, the Shins really do stand on their own. But Linkin Park is definitely not a band to even mention. The Shins maintain the pure indie rock sound, which, if anyone listens to a substantial amount of indie rock, almost always incorporates a good deal of electronics and keyboards.

And yes, this album does sound different. And I applaud them for that. I really don't care to see them become another indie pop machine and doles out record after record of the same catchy tunes. James' lyrics have evolved even further, so has the bands music as a hole.

Rogue Wave – California Lyrics 17 years ago
Growing up in California, this song exemplifies exactly what I think of it. But beyond saying "Screw California," I like to think of it in the way that Colin Hanks put it in Orange County. The question was, James Joyce hated his homeland (Ireland), but what would he have been if he hadn't grown up there and experienced what he had?

It seems to me that the unfortunate events that we see in our childhood, and attribute to our homeland, are actually the driving force that pushes us to become something better. I feel that this song attests to that.

The Shins – Nothing At All Lyrics 17 years ago
Just some lyric corrections.

"I see that you can finally see" is actually "You cut your eyes so you can finally see."

And in the chorus, is might be "flaw," but I hear

"There must be a fault in this fable, I
Have to contend with you all night."

And as far as this song being disappointing goes, it's not. The chord progression does sound the see, which really isn't that hard considering it's probably written in the same key. The melody itself is not the same, perhaps the theme, but not the range. Perhaps this song was inspired by Silhouettes, it's not uncommon to manipulate the same tones and themes from a piece that inspired the piece being written.

The song in itself, especially with James' lyricism, is awesome.

Hawthorne Heights – Ohio Is for Lovers Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm sorry, I'm double posting here, but I read something that upset me.

abeautifulliex9 says:

first of all.
learn the term "emo" and its origin.
This isnt emo.
emo is all this 80s and 90s indie bands

Now, if you're going to flame, do it correctly. Especially if you're going to preach about the definitions of genres. Go to last.fm, and tag search "indie." Give a listen to any one of those bands. Aside from Death Cab, Postal Service, and Bright Eyes, not one of those bands fits anywhere in the definition of "emo."

Indie itself was simply a reference to bands that recorded and supported themselves INDEPENDENTLY. Being that budgets were low, many bands were stuck with simple, and sometimes obscure instruments. Abstract lyrics are common as well, although some bands are also very straight-forward in their songwriting.

To each his own, with music especially. But let me just say, that any legend in music would be rolling over in his/her grave if they knew that this was the future. Because I highly doubt that Bob Dylan gives two shits about this commercialized scream-fest (he's not dead, but you get my point).

It's just a pop culture phenomena. Just like New Wave, and Grunge. Hopefully it follows in the same trend as those genres, and the sub-genres that grow out of it are worth a damn.

When I'm a poor college student who can't afford the appropriate substances to kill braincells, I'll be sure to try and listen to this. It makes my head hurt so bad, I'm sure it's killing something.

And before you flame me about coming on here, I came here to look up the lyrics to write an article. I just couldn't resist commenting, since it gets everyone so riled up.

And yeah, these guys blow.

Kthx.

Daft Punk – Human After All Lyrics 17 years ago
Rather than flame anyone about the meaning of the song *cough* I'll just say that this album does not suck as much as everyone leads on.

I think what everyone wanted, when awaiting the release of this album, was another 12 dance club hits. Not to knock the first two albums, I think they are pure genius for their genre, but in this album it seems that they've extended themselves as artists, not just some stupid DJ's.

And really, there is a sense of irony. Not only with this song, but the entire album. The use of robotic sounds and vocals to sing/talk about human experiences. It's fantastic.

The Strokes – Razorblade Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's about a relationship that had it's falling out. I like what Nitty said about how men may try and try and it still seems like there is no salvation or satisfaction.

It's that feeling of unrequited love, where the girl seems to act so indifferent, most especially AFTER the falling out, to where the guy feels like she doesn't care at all. And so he put the words into her mouth, since she won't say them, "My feelings are more important than yours. Oh, drop dead, I don't care. I won't worry..."

Sometimes all we need is an answer, and a straight one at that. But hardly ever will we get it. He's hanging on by that string, and wants to just "cut the rope." So he eggs her on by making her out to be so insensitive, to the point where she finally gives in and decideds to let him have it. At which point he no longer wants to know, because he knows he's about to get the closure he so longed for, when in reality he really wanted to hold on to that little string of hope, because he wanted it to work out.

I enjoy bands that can be cleverly spiteful. So my favourite part has to be where he switches up and says "Sweetheart, your feelings are more important, of course... Of course!" It's such a sharp statement after the rest of the lyrics, figuratively speaking, and the exclamatory "of course!" is just the twist of the knife.

I love it.
