Well, if what I understand is right, the devil in the details is the personification of a drug addiction or something along the lines of that, which is apparently what inspires him to write passionately and whatnot. But it's kind of depressing how he says "Looks like the devil's here to stay". That would mean that he's giving in and he'll never get out of the "Devil's" grip. I thought this album was supposed to have a positive message.
Don't get me wrong. I love this album. It's spectacular. But the lyrics are basically a B-Sides Meds if you think about it. |

By the way, the first verse is wrong. It's "You are a birth and you are waste". It sounds contradictory in itself, but that's what he says. |

I feel Therdak has the best interpretation of this song and it's the same thing I thought really. What happens in the song is it takes you through a tour of the Halls of Illusions. This is a place you apparently visit when you die and you're on you're way to hell. The illusion shows a universe in which your family and those close to you are happy and living the ideal life. This is of course just an illusion. Then it swirls you back to reality. The way things are now even though you're dead. It shows a world where those closest to you had their life ruined because of your evil ways.
The best example is in the lyrics when it says, "When they were kids you'd beat em and leave em home
And even whip em with the cord on the telephone". His children's lives are ruined because he was abusive and neglegent to them when he was alive and that's what caused them to become lowlife crackheads as adults. This song is amazing because it's basically talking about how an individual's evil ways don't only affect that person, but the people around them, and can even have great reprecussions long after they're dead. |

What a great song. I feel it's not just about drugs, but just anything that takes over your life and completely takes over becoming your master. I guess I'd relate Master of Puppets simply to any addiction. "Taste me you will see, more is all you need." I imagine the rush someone gets from gambling for instance. Hard to believe but that is a serious addiction people have and many even wager everything they have and end up losing their homes. |

I love this album, I just got hurt a little after Make Yourself so this album like just made me go, fuck it they rock all the time. I´ve been noticing in alot of songs he kind of speaks in the same ways. How he says in a song on Make Yourself which I´m not sure of the name, Brandon says
"Just when you thought it was okay to think, Here comes mental piracy. No, What I´m looking for, cannot be sold to me."
I think this is in the same idea of A Crow.. in which we must all start thinking for ourselves for once and stop doing what people charge us money on and tell us what we like and what we want.
I love Incubus and if I´m wrong with this song, I´m just glad I got to think twice on the subject. |
