I think this song is about a relationship that is definitely going down hill. The girl he is singing about is more worried about appearance than the actual relationship itself. And it seems they are just going through the motions and she has no emotion towards him except resentment ("Why can't you fake me a reason why you choose to blame me for all the times you hide.") I think he doesn't understand why she is being like this and he just wants her to give him something... Anything to know she is still there. And he's telling her it doesn't matter how little emotion she tries to show, she still has a heart and she is still human ("Your heart is real, it isn't bulletproof") I dunno... I may be totally wrong about it all... But that's what I feel this song is about. This song is amazing and I listen to it alllll the time! |

Ok first of all, let me say that this song has a sexiness to it that I love. Like the actual music is just... well sexy... Haha But to me this song is about a guy breaking up with his gf. But I think that she was the rebound because he says "I was thinking about telling you that I was in love with her. I'm still in love with her." And in the second verse he says "I was never really your's in the first place." The relationship they have is volatile and sexual: "The chemistry between liars like you and me ignites like gasoline". Maybe they were both rebounds for the other. They both have someone else they would rather be with. Love this song. One of my faves on the album. |

I agree with a lot of what ConnorH33 is saying except for a few things. I think when he is saying "We can't both become the same pawn that's made to fall" he is saying that only one of us is going to win this battle. We both can't win. I do think he is talking about the war and the effect it has had on the world around us. "From me to you, your stabbing me through you, you're stabbing you through him" I think means that it doesn't matter who the fighting is directed towards, if effects everyone and it is a never ending process because it just goes around in a big circle. "Feeling manic for a day, depends on the trends, depends on the surface, if the sun never sets" What each side does depends on the other side. If one side strikes, the other strikes back. And I agree that the sunset is the end of the war. He is saying that if the war never ends then the fighting will never stop (obviously). Also, I think that "Is the main thing you shout til the bitter end into jars" is all one complete thought (like I typed it.) I think what he means by this is people can say things all day about what they would do to stop the war or make peace or save the environment, but really all they are doing is screaming into jars. Meaning, they won' ever be heard or make a difference until they actually put their thoughts and words into action and start being proactive about things. So he is asking "Are you going to actually do soemthing about it or are you just going to continue to just speak the words?" But this is all just my interpretation of it all, I could be all wrong. |

i think this song is about how you feel after you and someone you love end things. whether you or the other person ended things. you know that you don't belong together but you still miss that person. when you think about it all you can get so wrapped up in missing that person that you just don't want to do it anymore. you don't want to think of them and you want to escape from everything because thinking of it all makes you miss the way things were when you were with that person. i don't even know if that made sense to anyone else but it does to me. |

this song is incredible. he is such a clever lyricist. and i'm not really sure why people are confused with him saying "who says you can't take it with you when you go." that is an old saying that i have heard my entire life. only in the saying it is usually talking about when you die you can't take all your worldly posessions with you when you go, but he obviously just put his own clever twist to it. and answering to sm000's confusion: she is almost to dallas and she was everything to him and she took everything of his (physically and emotionally) with him when she left. hope that helps your confusion some. :-) and just a note to kaki. you are stupid. if you don't like what eric church has to say then don't listen to him. he doesn't need idiots like you listening to him because there are pleanty of people who love his music. and that doesn't make all of us right wing conservatives or ignorant. |

let me start off by saying that this song is the most beautiful 2 minutes i have ever heard. the soul and emotion in his voice makes me cry. it's incredible. i can't stop listening to the song. i was so shocked when i found out that it was him singing it. i don't think this song would be half as affective if he didn't have the emotion in his voice that he has. you can tell he was feeling every word he was saying... i would have never imagined that voice coming out of him! he should definitly record an album. as far as the lyrics... they fit PERFECTLY in the movie. especially into that particular scene. it's pretty amazing how that song wasn't written for the movie but fit in so well. i wish he would record the full length version. i feel it's about him trying to resist her but he can't. she is his destiny. he's "damned by the light" because of what he is... but she doesn't care. and she wants to be with him forever. no matter what she has to do. so the words "let me sign" mean that she will do anything to be with him, even signing her soul over. this is about true, undying love... |

first an FYI to razr1313... just because a song is titled "hear me now" doesn't mean it has to say it... it does in fact say "can you feel now" in that one part... if you don't believe it then check the lyrics they posted themselves on myspace... on with the song... although i can see everyone's point on the song being about someone who has reached their limit, i see this song meaning something else... the song isn't saying "I'VE been down this road" or "i'm sorry I'VE let you down again", it's saying "WE'VE been down this road" and "i'm sorry WE'VE let you down"... i think its talking about one of two things.. its either talking about our generation (generation Y) and how we are looked down upon... OR it has a bigger meaning... and this is the one i lean towards more... i think this song is a plea to the world in which we live and the people living in it... we are so worried about what other people are doing that we don't care to look at our own lives... and all the world is trying to do is make us believe lie after lie... he is begging (now my body's on the floor and i am calling out to you) the people of the world to change... and even though i know how people get when there is talk of religious conotations in songs but i also think that in parts of the song he is talking to God as well (i'm sorry if we've let you down)... also i think there are two "voices" in the prechorus... one is the world telling you to believe in the lie they are telling you the other voice is saying you need to get on your knees and have faith (obviously) and they seem to be fighting each other... the world wants you to believe that there is no God or higher being to have faith in but you need to believe that because that is your salvation and can be your sanity in this world full of lies and deception... ps... i have been a fan of these guys since they were just a local band in nashville... i agree with jedigirl... this song is about drug addiction and what it can do to a relationship... and actually i feel every word to this song cuz i know how it feels being in a relationship with someone who is an addict... in the first verse he is telling the girl to get help... help is the train leaving town... in the line "conscience is a faint, unpleasant sound. you've worried enough, here's your chance so take it" i feel he is telling her to listen to the voice saying what she is doing is wrong even though she really doesn't like what its saying... and if she doesn't listen and get help its going to be like a ticking time bomb just waiting to go off because you never know when the drugs will be too much to handle (a heart attack is sleeping in your chest) so you need to get help while you still can (so make a move while you're still breathing) i think he is basically saying in the chorus your cover is blown and you aren't as innocent as you look... and as much as i want to be with you, i can't because of your issues in the second verse he is saying did i mean anything to you or was it a lie? was i just someone to catch you when you fell? (when you were mine, was i for you, just one cheap thrill just to help you make it? dammit i hope you didn't fake it)... he's also telling her that her lies are starting to wear her down (hypocrisy has really aged you well) and she needs to come clean to everyone before she drives everyone away and while people still care about her (the white on your nose is your secret to tell so you should speak while they're still listening) in the bridge, its come to the point where her life has fallen apart because she didn't come clean with everyone and she didn't get help and pretty much everyone has washed their hands clean of her, including him (you can scream outloud but your panic falls on deaf ears)... he's telling her that she can't blame anyone else because she did this to herself (this is where you've brought yourself and this is what you've always feared)... i think that the world is the "faceless crowd" that he is referring to and the world has no sympathy for her and neither does he anymore ong explaination i know...
