The Gaslight Anthem – Bring It On Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"the cool" that they often refer to is Miles Davis (and his cool jazz). Not sure how it relates to this song, though. |
The Gaslight Anthem – Great Expectations Lyrics | 15 years ago |
towards the end of the song, after the reference to Night Moves and the song from 1962 (around 2:30) the drum sounds like the intro from Be My Baby for a bit. |
The Gaslight Anthem – Casanova, Baby! Lyrics | 15 years ago |
also "In the midnight hour" is a Wilson Pickett song... |
The Gaslight Anthem – Casanova, Baby! Lyrics | 15 years ago |
this song is so sweet! Fairly self-explanatory. I like that the rhythm sounds a bit like a train, as the first line's a train reference. There are a couple of other references I can pick out right away: - Mustang Sally (Wilson Pickett died in 2006, we're worse off without her / him) - Quarter to Three is a 1961 song by Gary U.S. Bonds, also covered by Springsteen. - the whole "we could run all night" picks up a pretty common Springsteen theme also I think the lyrics might be "Boy, I still wanna be your man" but could be wrong... |
Sufjan Stevens – Vito's Ordination Song Lyrics | 15 years ago |
this song is so beautiful. What a wonderful gift to a friend - a song like this to celebrate his ordination. Regardless of whether or not you pay attention to the religious bits (which are quite lovely and comforting) it's a wonderful song. I sure it can appeal to anyone. |
Wolf Parade – Language City Lyrics | 15 years ago |
when I saw them perform Dan mentioned that this song is about "Eastern European politics....and coke" which makes sense. 'We are tired, we can't sleep' (coked out and talking pointlessly, and always about the same garbage) |
Spoon – Black Like Me Lyrics | 16 years ago |
just a note that the song title comes from the John Howard Griffin book Black Like Me (which in turn is from a poem somewhere). The song doesn't really have to do with the book (which is about a white man who disguises himself as a black man and travels to the deep south to see how life is different)...but interesting anyway. I think the song is, as a lot of people have said, about feeling lonely and wanting someone to take care of you. |
Neko Case – Make Your Bed Lyrics | 16 years ago |
creepily fantastic! pretty self-explanatory...a woman who kills her cheating lover and comes for his mistress next. |
Josh Ritter – Rumors Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Fun fun song! Sounds like the music's never loud enough to drive away the memory of someone (a girl, I assume), no matter how hard you try to fight back by playing it loud. Any ideas about the meaning of the title? |
Josh Ritter – The Temptation Of Adam Lyrics | 17 years ago |
what an example of Josh Ritter's incredible songwriting ability. This song is funny, sad, a love song....I like the way he humourously and coyly ties in a subject as serious as nuclear war. Love it! |
The National – Racing Like a Pro Lyrics | 17 years ago |
you know what, I heard 'pronoun' too the first time... I agree with you guys except I kind of thought it might be about a man, not a woman (and that the line about 'womanly' hands was a reference to someone with a cushy office job and yuppy metro lifestyle) |
Josh Ritter – Kathleen Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I adore this song. I think it captures that innocent and kind of hopeful mood you had (or have, in retrospect) for parties in high school. You go hoping to see that one person and hope something will happen. This girl, Kathleen, has everyone's attention and tries at the same time to act cool about it but also like a sweet, innocent girl. It seems like she, too, is hoping a certain someone shows up. I don't even think he actually drives her home - maybe he does, maybe the last verse is just a hypothetical of what he hopes will happen with her. He doesn't think so much of himself that anything major will happen, but only that he'll get to be the one to drive her home and they'll share that secret. on another note: I love the line "every heart is a package tangled up in knots someone else tied" |
