Uhh. I'd bet that the author has read "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." Have you?

Tom Petty – Mary Jane's Last Dance Lyrics 13 years ago
brimm, I also always think of that Forrest Gump scene. I've always had the impression that Mary Jane was a wild girl who got into partying, drugs, and sex (perhaps taking after her mother...good looking, never around). The narrator knows that she's somewhat of a call-girl, but that they genuinely dig each other. I think the lyrics "I've been told you never slow down you never grow old/tired of screwin' up tired of goin' down/tired of myself tired of this town" are the singer's account of what the girl is thinking. Perhaps she confided in him at some time. She's goes out that last night, with the narrator. And it's these thoughts that lead her to the balcony ledge. It's like the narrator is rationalizing her life and her death in retrospect, perhaps even realizing his own role in it.

Janis Joplin – Coo Coo Lyrics 17 years ago
Wow! I can't believe I'm the first to comment on this remarkable song. This song personifies Janis's extraoridnary vocals: soulful and powerful, but sweet and innocent. I cannot fairly wager a guess as to what the lyrics mean, but I imagine that the cuckoo is a metaphor for fate.

This is singly the greatest and most eloquent love song ever written.

White Zombie – Thunder Kiss '65 Lyrics 17 years ago
Most of Rob's songs are just descriptive imagery. I read somewheres that he writes some of his lyrics as narrations of various horror movies. I don't know what this one is though...I'm not up to date on my horror flicks these days. Kickass song though. I love the power that drives all of Zombie's tunes.

This song is phenomenal. I've never heard one like it...another testement to the fact that they ROCK.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – Teach Your Children Lyrics 17 years ago
Knyteguy: I wasn't aware that Young still toured with CSN. From my understanding, there was quite a fallingout between Young and Crosby. I'm not sure on the accuracy of that statement, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

This song brings tears to my eyes every time. The incredible message delivered is that you are never done learning. Through all the teachings you give your children, you should be learning more from them every day. And it is also a message to youth that although your parents might not always do the best thing, they (usually, anyways) always mean the best.

Neil Young – Cowgirl In The Sand Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think the girl is in a marriage. He suggests that she has not yet changed her name. I think this is about the inconstancies of women, as mentioned by Giordano. But I think it's more than that. I think it's detailing a woman for which he had harboured deep affections and then noticed her flirtatious and "game"like behavior. It seems to me that this turned him away (When so many love you, is it the same), and then suddenly she turned her affections back to him. It's the "Hello woman of my dreams; This is not the way it seems; Purple words..." that leads me to this conclusion. It seems that he's caught wind of the fact that she's interested in him because he quit his interest in her, and he's trying to explain to her that his love is real but hers is not and he's turning her down for that reason (What a horridly constructed sentence!) Maybe that's too complicated...but it happens a lot. I know: I'm a woman old enough now to change her name. :)

Neil Young – Down By The River Lyrics 17 years ago
I never thought this song was a heroin reference. I see where you're coming from on it...but it's usually coupled with Cinnamon Girl, which I figured to be about a real girl in his life.

Madonna – Papa Don't Preach Lyrics 17 years ago
Keeping her boyfriend could be "trouble" and "an awful mess" if the her parents didn't approve of him. Ever talk to a Jewish girl trying to date a non-Jewish boy? It's pretty easy to see how that could be confused. I do think that the meaning is straightforward, but I could see how the Kelly Clarkson folks could get it mixed up. Her voice is too young with not enough power to convey the true emotions and vitality of this song. So in that respect, I fully agree with Barefoot.

Furthermore, I find it remarkably rude to insult another person's interpretation of a song. Keep in mind that it's all poetry and art (not all of it good) and fully open to interpretation. You can only draw on your own experiences when trying to understand the artists mind.

Mad Season – Long Gone Day Lyrics 17 years ago
Silver spoons fix the crown
The luckless ones are broken
Fears and lies for answers
You and open flames

I interpret this little stanza as more social commentary. "Silver spoons affix the crowns" refers to how the affluent and wealthy get all the power, while everyone else is held down, some even in poverty. Kinda like the notion of the bourgeoisie verses the proletariat. Then the lyric moves to indicate that all that the media has to offer as to why things are as they are is "fears and lies," eventually leaving us to burn proverbially. I think the song as a whole is a testiment to how your views change with age.

The Animals – House Of The Rising Sun Lyrics 17 years ago
Sugarshotsarefun: That literally is a walk down Bourbon Street. It's just a road lined by strip joints, seedy bars, and the random female impersonator. New Orleans rocks.

Thanks for the history Suki.

Led Zeppelin – House of the Rising Sun (The Animals cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
I have about a dzoen versions of this song (all of them good). I do have a live one that is labelled as Zeppelin, and it does sound like them. I'm not saying it is, and I don't much care who it is. The version rocks. Regardless, wikipedia is not the end-all-be-all of track listings. For example, I have about 20 tracks recorded by AIC that never appeared on a major label (demos, bootlegs, and other random stuff), and none of them are listed on wikipedia. Be careful what you use for sources. :)

Lamb – Sweetheart Lyrics 17 years ago
This is a fabulous song. I love the heavy bass and the triphop feel. I think the lyrics are pretty self explanitory. Her voice is so haunting. It's like she's singing just inside your head. The harmonies are simple but effective.

Third Eye Blind – Semi-Charmed Life Lyrics 17 years ago
More to the point, the lyrics are full of imagery and dirrectness. I love "And I speak to you like the chorus to the verse." It's like he puts this woman up on a pedestal and he sees himself as in a bit of a rut. In particular, I enjoy "And the four right chords can make me cry."

Waffles rock.

Third Eye Blind – Semi-Charmed Life Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with you TangledWeb. I like how the story is self contained. Every once in a while you find a song that narrates your life perfectly as you're living it. I'm not much of a Third-Eye Blind fan, but I love this song. I was 15 when this song hit...and I can't believe they ever put it on the radio!

Acid Bath – Scream Of The Butterfly Lyrics 17 years ago
This was the first Acid Bath song I heard...and I absolutely fell in love with them, bought both full length albums, and subsequently bought up Agents of Oblivion and Deadboy and the Elephantmen (also fronted by Dax). This song is incredibly beautiful and expressive in a very raw and animalistic way. Although some of Dax's lyrics can be immature (not in this song, but in others) they are full of combative imagery. I love it.

Jethro Tull – Locomotive Breath Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm as suprised as Mojo, although I only have 15 years into Tull. I had assumed that the song was somehow describing a soldier going to his death. I find this belief structure interpretation much deeper and more true to the lyrics. I knew this site had to be good for something. :)

Alice in Chains – Died Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this is a beautiful song. It's brutally honest and really exposes Layne's emotional side. "My heart is tired of beating slow" is particularly powerful. I also had assumed that it was an early recording...but it makes better sense that it is one of the last. I think the unpolished sound adds to its charm.

Alice in Chains – Man In The Box Lyrics 17 years ago
Sean Kinney admits in an interview that this song is about veal. Although, xstatic's quote comes from the same interview where Stayley claims to have been stoned when he wrote the lyrics. Actually, except for replacing the word "calf" with "man," the words are quite literally true to the treatment of baby cows and how veal is produced. Calves are chained to their stalls to keep their meat nice and tender and then are deprived of iron to keep the meat looking sparkley white. They end up drinking their own urine. Look into it...you'll most likely never eat veal again.

Alice in Chains – God Smack Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with Bandobando. I was under the impression that Layne's use of herion didn't start until after this album was released. If you listen to the words instead of reading them, you can understand that he sounds quite contemptuous both towards the drug and the drug's users.

I think the evidence is pretty heavily leaning towards Godsmack getting their name from the song.

Alice in Chains – Blood Tears Little Girl Lyrics 17 years ago
This track is on a demo tape from 1989. So it is a very young Layne or a very young person in the Seattle scene who is an almost exact match in timbre and cadence to Layne...of whom I think we can all agree has a very distinctive voice and style. I personally am much happier thinking it's Layne. I'm wondering if it maybe refers to his sister?

Alice in Chains – God Am Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with most of you that this is a sort of mocking and cynical prayer. One of the things I appreciate most about Layne's lyrics is his wordplay. Using "god am" to express his exasperation and despair (as "goddamn") instead of "god is" is literary brilliance. Quite a catchy tune overall.

Alice in Chains – Sludge Factory Lyrics 17 years ago
Sliznut, I think you got it pretty much spot on. I interpret the song much the same, but with one exception. I think the song as a whole is about his cynicism towards the production label. However, I don't think that he's using the milk carton reference to say that folks won't look for him when he's dead or because they will already know the cause. I think he's saying that other people are just used to him being reclusive for long periods of time (or straight missing practice or recording sessions). So if he is "missing" for a period of say, 20 hrs or so, he wouldn't actually be "missed". i.e., no one would print his face on a milk carton.

To PopNFresh07: Demri died of endocarditis, not overdose. Also, she died in 1996. The selftitled album was released in 1995.
