Mastodon – Colony of Birchmen Lyrics 17 years ago
While I don't know much about the backstory to Blood Mountain, I got a cool LOTR storytelling vibe from this song. I was rather surprised to find out that Josh Homme (of Queens of the Stone Age and Eagles of Death Metal fame) had a vocal spot. I do wish he was more prominent, seeing as everything he does is really cool. From reading other comments, I surmise that the song is about a werewolf running from a colony of giant tree-people. Sounds completely ridiculous, I know. But that's why it's completely awesome.

I saw the video on MTV. MTV!?!? Why would that station play this video? It's not exactly begging for mainstream exposure, with all the hip-hop/R&B surrounding it. Maybe MTV is slowly turning back to its rock roots again. Wait a minute, MTV sucks. Fuck MTV!!

Green Day – American Idiot Lyrics 17 years ago
It's not all about TABS.

It's not all about complexity.

I don't have anything more to say. Somebody will post on why metal is so much better than Green Day following this one, and how we are all morons for listening to this song. And I don't care.

Beck – Nausea Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm sorry. When was "tits" made a compliment?

Nausea. God, that groove is fucking nasty. And that's a compliment. I always though the chorus was "Nausea...rock on!" though...oh well. I love the music.

One complaint. The ending. I wish it faded out instead of ending out of nowhere.

Green Day – American Idiot Lyrics 17 years ago
TB 1624, I get what you're saying...but you can't put together a list of the band's best songs on their albums and say..."If they waited, THIS could have been." That is insane. First of all, is they waited that long, I'm sure the songs would sound much different. And Green Day would have been out of the public conscienious-ness for too long.

And The Korean, I get what you are saying too. But don't shoot down every Green Day fan. I, for one, am a student at Yale. While much of their fan base (unintentionally, I hope) is a younger demographic, there are people who have matured and still enjoy Green Day.

Pearl Jam – All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
I didn't like U2's cover much...it didn't seem earnest enough. I doubt that PJ's concert version is better than Hendrix's, but McCready is a more blues-based guitar player. The Edge is more of...well, what is the Edge? U2 went from arena rock to techno to back again.

Metallica – Better Than You Lyrics 17 years ago
And what reason have you to suspect "EvilLawyer" of lying, "Cleveland Steamer"? The story seems perfectly believable. Anyways, yeah, the song seems to be describing the human nature to survive over others. Interesting to note, this song won a Grammy award for best metal performance...

Bush – Glycerine Lyrics 17 years ago
I think I found the meaning of the song through another post. Glycerine, the substance, is used in explosives, as a stabilizer, I believe. What contradicts this is that glycerine is also used in certain perfumes.

So, love...is explosive. I really wish I could delve deeper...but the lyrics are very cryptic. But I think the "love is explosive" meaning through glycerine is, well, genius songwriting. Gavin Rossdale must know his chemicals!

Musically, I think the song is great. The violins in the background add a foreboding air to the song. The chorus is a great concert refrain. And, throughout the song, you can hear the direct pressing of the strings on the guitar. I love this sound in songs. It adds a clean air to the music. I have an amplifier that produces that kind of sound, and I wouldn;t trade it in for anything. I found my perfect amp...and, well...I'm like anal about keeping the damn thing. Home is where the heart is. Oh, yes.

Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit Lyrics 17 years ago
Okay...the criticisms of this song, pulled from other posts, are this...

Scenario #!: This song is not Nirvana's greatest. It is gay.

My thoughts: No, it's not Nirvana's greatest. But it certainly is not gay. I've heard "Milk It" being used as an example for a better song. Well, neither you nor I could possibly imagine "Milk It" being played on the radio. It would turn every casual listener off. Every band has "that song" that made them. Instead of degrading the people that listen to this song as "posers", we should applaud this song. Through this song, including myself, many people have found Nirvana's music.

Scenario #2: Kurt didn't want this many fans. Because of "posers" like you, he killed himself.

My thoughts: This is Cobain's greatest fault. You don't make music so that it sits in a bargain bin at your local car wash, so that nobody pays attention to it or listens to it. As a member of a band, you want people to be able to find and enjoy your music. I'm sorry, but I disagree with Cobain on many of his views. While there is no doubt he is a musicial genius, a modern Lennon, if you will, his view on life was ass backwards. It's a shame, really. I think, and, no offense to any die-hard Cobain fans, because I love his music, he was just as big a poser as his listeners. He had this idea in his head that his band was going to be one of those underground bands that never produces a hit single, trashes their instruments, and finds themselves playing at Little Johnny's birthday party across the street. When things didn't turn out his way, he blew his brains out. Instead of looking down upon those that listen to "Teen Spirit", we should be glad that many people enjoy the song. If a song can make somebody happy, well, than that's all we can ask for.

I think that "Teen Spirit" is an awesome song. It has great hit potential. I'm surprised that it got the success that it did, because of the heavy, fuzz-box chorus, but the verses are heavily melodic, the guitar solo is sweet, and the whole songs seems like a modern-day alternative version of the Beatles, especially adding in the cryptic lyrics. I, personally, view Nirvana's best song as "Rape Me". But, nonetheless, "Teen Spirit" deserves all the attention it's getting.

Oasis – The Hindu Times Lyrics 17 years ago
Song Information:
'The Hindu Times" is a song by Oasis, and is the first single from their fifth album Heathen Chemistry on April 15, 2002, reaching number one in the UK charts.

The song was written by Noel Gallagher. The title has little or nothing to do with the lyrics of the song, which are more in the vein of "Rock 'n' Roll Star." Noel claims to have gotten the title off a t-shirt. It has been speculated that the title refers to the main riffs' similarity to Indian music in sound, sounding as if played on a sitar.

The song, which matches the powerful fast rock of their earlier work with the psychedelic feel of their later work, was one of the first Oasis singles since (What's the Story) Morning Glory to receive almost all positive reviews from the critics. Rolling Stone called it "a pummeling and thoroughly transfixing T. Rex grind...a magnificent drone". NME said "daft title aside...it's the best Oasis single since "D'You Know What I Mean" and the most blatant mission statement from Oasis Mk II."
