Wow I think you people get more offended than Jesus himself would if he heard the song.

What the lyrics are saying is the real decisions that define a person in life happen on the street, in real life situations we're faced with, rather than what/whom/how a person worships or what they say they believe in when life is easy [life begins when church ends].

Taylor Swift – Mean Lyrics 13 years ago
I agree that this song doesn't seem very deep, but that's what makes it so real. I think the bully she's talking to is her father or grandfather or some father-figure type in her life. Maybe he's verbally abusive, an alcoholic, or just a petty person threatened by the notion that she'll outshine & outgrow him.

The reason that I think it's not just about a friend or peer is that it talks about how she can "never impress" him, and he makes her "feel like a nothing", etc. Also, I'm pretty sure that at some point she switches from singing "where you can't hear me" to "where you can't HIT me". People you meet can really make you feel like crap for a while, but a parent influences you so much more in the long time, and even if you know they're wrong, you keep trying to impress them and their opinion never really stops mattering, no matter how old or successful you get. Also, that part about someday he'll be sitting at a bar grumbling about her & other things he always rants about is just the picture of a father who is just stuck in his ways & can't accept he was wrong all those times he came in complaining to his buddies about his kid he thinks is a loser.

As for the song seeming "childish", I think that's what lends it its authenticity. It's how a kid responds to their parents. When your parents hurt you as a kid, your only defense is verbal - the "I hate you", "you're so mean" type of response. So in the song she's just giving voice to all those things she wants to say to her dad out of the angry hurt child inside her. Even as an adult those memories stay with a person, and bring them back to feeling tiny & helpless again. So maybe she could come up with a deeply-worded retort, but her gut response now is to respond to him with the same raw & pure emotions, the same way as when she was younger (insulting a parent with name-calling).

She's moved on with her life & knows he's wrong, but still needs to reassure herself (and him) that her success and distance from this guy will keep her safe, emotionally and physically.

Pearl Jam – Black Lyrics 14 years ago
The lyrics to this song are just so raw, and you can feel the way losing this person has colored, or tattooed, his world. When something sad happens, or you feel really depressed - it colors your world black. Things that should be happy like children playing only remind you of what's missing, or what did or could go wrong. To me it's a song about being suddenly hit with this new, painful world view. And those last lines "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star, in somebody else's sky but why....can't it be mine"...wow. It's like the other person has moved on, and you are just the leftover pieces of broken glass, never to be put together again, that is left as they put the past behind them. Amazing how songs can take you back, or can foreshadow something that happens in your life. This song always resonated with me, even as a kid, and now as an adult it's sort of haunting as to why.

ABBA – The Winner Takes It All Lyrics 14 years ago
great interpretation! I would just add that the winner in the song is the one who "won", or ended up marrying, the man Meryl Streep loved in the movie. And Meryl was the "loser", looking in at someone else's happiness that inherently meant her own sadness. Been there.

I am exactly the same way - feeling that way about the time I've spent with my mother. Sniffle. It's a beautiful song.

Madonna – Don't Cry For Me Argentina Lyrics 14 years ago
People, please comment on the actual song meaning! Yes, it's from Andrew Lloyd Weber's Broadway musical Evita, and it has meaning within that context. I think it's about more than just that she hasn't changed and is still one of the people. I think it reflects that the character has just peaked, and finds herself disillusioned with power and glamour and all that she's worked for. I think it's about how success can seem to change people but inside they still are the same, and often find their lives still feel empty, and their basic need is still for love and acceptance, just as it is for all people, in all stations of life. Maybe I'm reading too much into the song, but I think that's what's great about poetry and songs - they can be universal (like when you mis-hear the lyrics to a song for many years but prefer it the way you'd heard it, not the way you find out it actually goes...)

Please....banter ;)

Jose Luis Perales – Y como es él? Lyrics 15 years ago
I love this song, how he parallels the mundane details of hearing about a person, with the knowledge of the fact that the new person is completely destroying your life and breaking your heart. I felt this way when I found out my x was getting married. You try to act like it's no big deal - who is she, where did you meet, what does she do; but inside you're wanting to yell out that it's killing you and this new woman is a thief - stealing away your hopes for love and happiness.

What exactly do you think he's talking about? It confuses me at the end when he refers to his friend as a man...

Pepe Aguilar – Me vas a extranar Lyrics 15 years ago
Love this song!\ But it's better in Spanish! :

Me vas a extrañar
lo puedo jurar
cuando sus manos se deslicen
tocando tu cuerpo me vas a llorar

I think this song was written, or at least dedicated to the late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. It makes me teary if I even hear the melody.

If only it were so easy to lose yourself in someone else. I think for women it isn't so easy. I totally empathize - I have been there. At the same time, no one wants to have the one they're with be with them just to forget someone else...

Such a beautiful, meaningful song. One day my mom came in and saw me crying while i listened to it, and she said she'd never in my life seen my cry at a song that wasn't a love song. I love it.
