To me, this song has a real Noir feel to it... The description of the woman's clothing definitely is like that of 40's era noir film. I imagine it's about some sort of black-market activities, drug running or some mafia-type stuff. "The chicken has come home to roost" definitely sounds like gangster code. |

I agree w/SunsetRubdown, and would take it a step further. I think this song is a slightly sarcastic jab at mushy love songs, and it is an ode to self-love, which is the motivating force in all of the actions described in the song. The song even speaks to the way that self interested actions can reveal to us our true natures, as in these lines: "Now we see this/As in a mirror dimly/Then we shall see each other/Face to face," and in Raskolnikov's [ |

I think the way that he alludes to "pale green things" (grass coming through the asphalt, the wet leaves, seaweed and Indiana sawgrass) throughout the song was a way of juxtaposing the death of his stepfather with something that really represents new live, along with being parts of his memories of his stepfather. |

This song may describe a longing for acceptance from one's parents. Lines like "Kiss my falling knee" and even the refrain of "Forgive me, let live me", are requests to parents who don't understand their child's (possibly gender-bending) identity. |
