Dr. Alban – No Coke Lyrics 13 years ago
This set of lyrics is missing about half the lyrics, but asside from the bizarre "reggae" accent it's not too hard to understand. It's a relic of the "war on drugs" inasmuch as it tries to simply paint the drugs themselves in an ugly light, which is a gross oversimplification of the problem to say the least. But it's got a catchy beat, that's for damn sure. Good work on the synthesizers in this tune.

Yeah it's rather like the "Marlboro Country" ads -even if you've had 'em and know they're lousy cigarettes, they still make you want one!

The Cars – Moving In Stereo Lyrics 14 years ago
I can say with conviction that this is an excellent song to listen to when one is in an altered state. Through Headphones is a must for the full effect.

Shriekback – Go Bang Lyrics 14 years ago
Basically I think this song is about being sick of normal life, people, and society, and seeking a catharsis -i.e. going bang.

Lady GaGa – LoveGame Lyrics 14 years ago
I must say that I'm infinitely amused that, for the video, someone made up an actual "Disco Stick" (A "pimp cane", if you will, with a disco ball for a head) as a prop. Not too hard to figure out what this song's about, though. Lady Gaga doesn't always write the best music, but I have respect for anyone today who writes their own music.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – Southern Cross Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm one who takes the literal view of this song; a man and his girlfriend have it out, and this time he leaves instead of her, she having done so twice before, and he takes only his ship, setting out on the longest sailing journey there is in an attempt to purge himself. One night he realizes that his love for her is like "an anchor" -and think about it, in a ship, if you drop the anchor at sea, you can sail all you want, but you can't leave it behind, if you can make any progress at all. Eventually he reaches the southern islands, and realizes that, while his old dreams for the future may perish, his time with the girl was still meaningful to both of them, and while they have no future together, in his new surrounding he DOES have a future, and will find someone new.
Good song to listen to if your relationship is in the toilet pan; while me may not have a ship to help us cope like the narrator does (lucky git), it's important to work things over rationally and realize there's always a future.

The Five Stairsteps – Ooh Child Lyrics 14 years ago
It's a great song with a great sentiment; it does make me happy to listen to it; great for when your problems are weighing on your mind; if you focus on the future with confidence and knuckle down and get through the tough times, things will get better. Everyone needs to hear this now and again.

Shriekback – Glory Bumps Lyrics 14 years ago
Typical Shriekback; this is a harsh jab at religion, in this particular case evangelical types who cry "Apocalypse" and make a profit off of it. "Glory Bumps" are the gooseflesh said to occur at the time of "Rapture"; an event in the christian mythos, at the end of the world, when the true believers will be taken bodily into the afterlife.

Shriekback – Faded Flowers Lyrics 14 years ago
Everything, and everyone, is ephemeral. We are to the gods as flies to wanton boys; a tiny speck in the interminable progress of history. Only Shriekback could make this sound so beautiful; this is perhaps one of the most touching and emotional songs I've ever heard; and it rivals "Tomorrow Wendy" by Concrete Blonde for sheer sadness.

Lords of the New Church – Russian Roulette Lyrics 14 years ago
I take this song to be about watching movies, possibly, but not neccessarily, while stoned off your ass. Most every line is a refference to a movie of some sort, even the title and refrain can be seen as a refference to "The Deer Hunter". That said, I have no idea what is meant by the lyric "I'm the Nuremberg Stepper Blowin' Wets Away"; it doesn't make a lick of sense...

Shriekback – Gunning For The Buddha Lyrics 14 years ago
Nah, it's most definitely a rebuke of religion; the song is sung from the point of view of metaphorical mercenaries who have been hired to assassinate "The Buddah" -i.e. a living representation of religion for the purposes of the song -it could have just as easily been "The Christ" but since he's supposed to get whacked in his mythos, the Buddah makes better sense. It makesa lot of sense when you listen to it; the lines about "Death and money", "Big Ideas and Firm Decisions", and "reality and Passion" all speak of things that religion tries to fight against, stave off, or stifle, and that now is a great time to cast off these artificial constraints and live life fully and passionately.

Pet Shop Boys – Rent Lyrics 14 years ago
I would have to say that this, like a lot of songs written or sung by gay people, gets a lot of weight attached tothat little fact and not much attached to the real meaning. There's never any statements of gender in the lyrics, and it could just as easily apply to homo or hetero relationships. The meaning of the lyrics and story here are about a "kept" lover, not "ZOMG Buttsex!"

Shriekback – Hammerheads Lyrics 14 years ago
Hammerheads are the religious extremists; the scary people like the "Quiverfull" people, like Al-Quaida; they can't be reasoned with because you can't reason a man out of something he didn't reason himself into. They want to drive their philosophy and way of life down the throats of all men because they feel their god is on their side. They might use guns or words or stolen aeroplanes but they're all dangerous, and they'll shout and push until they get their way or civilized men put them down.

Lady GaGa – Just Dance Lyrics 14 years ago
Well it's pretty terrible but I had to comment; someone on a forums posted the video and it cracked me up because when they brought in that guy to sing the bridge it sounded like he was saying "So many women without a bra" which is indeed one of the pleasure of going to the club... Heh.

Concrete Blonde – The Sky Is a Poisonous Garden Lyrics 15 years ago
I would think this is about a relationship which will be judged harshly -"They knew what they had would be young naked prey..." I'm pretty sure that the bit about dying at the end is the euphemistic sense -that is, to have an orgasm (Shakespeare used that one a lot and the French still call it "The little death", not someone actually dying, or the whole next morning wouldn't matter much, would it?

submissions
The Psychedelic Furs – President Gas Lyrics 15 years ago
Seems to me to be a cynical view of far-left leadership. The album was released in 1982, so it's quite possible the song was written under the Carter administration, and we've scarecely been as far left as that... until now that is. Then Again they're an English band, but it seems to fit pretty well.

Madness – House Of Fun Lyrics 15 years ago
Indeed it's about a kid trying to buy rubbers; using euphamisms because there are people he knows in the shop and he doesn't want to be heard saying "Let's have a packet of reservoir-tipped prophylactics; extra-sensative type." with the old gossips in the shop. Yes, once upon a time such things were vended as "behind-the counter" items rather than "Over the counter". Quite amusing.

Boys Don't Cry – I Wanna Be A Cowboy Lyrics 15 years ago
I don't realy feel this song has any particular meaning other than the obvious. There is a certain glamour to the "cowboy" life; I remember working at a Ford dealership and we had a great pickup truck -an F-350 six-pack with the "King Ranch" package. The thing made me want to wear my western boots, hat, and grow a long moustache, and eat Burger King Wester Whoppers (it was right near a Burger King and we ate a lot of Burger King at that dealership.). A great sentiment for the lifestyle of the cowboy.

Men at Work – It's A Mistake Lyrics 15 years ago
I can see this both ways, to be honest -the remorse of an individual soldier who has accidentally commited an attrocity, and also as the reflections on a nuclear war that wasn't meant to be -such as the one avoided by a brave Russian soldier whose name I just can't remember -who thought that the computer was in error when it told him there was a nuclear attack. The fact that it can be read both ways just makes it more poigneit.

k.d. lang – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics 15 years ago
K.D. Lang had a big hit with "Constant Craving" -a fairly self-explainatory song about being really, really hot for somebody.
This, on the other hand, is an excellent cover of a Leonard Cohen song, to which Lang has changed the lyrics a bit. There is a great deal of millitary imagry in this version, what with the "Flag on the marble arch" and victory marches and shooting people. I See the narrator here as someone who is having a first serious relationship ("I used to live alone before I knew ya") and is perhaps made bitter by their past experiences ("But all I’ve ever learn from love / Is how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya") -be it actually shooting someone (which goes nicely with the millitary themes of the previous verse) or simply how to propperly bury the hatchet on a doomed relationship.
I guess we could say that the narrator is jaded -even perhaps "damaged goods", yet still happy to be with someone.

It should be noted that this song is the inspiration for the term "Razor Girl" in William Gibson's novel "Neuromancer" -a "Razor Girl" being a female mercenary.

Tom Waits – Pasties and a G-String (At the Two O'Clock Club) Lyrics 16 years ago
Pretty simply a song about spending a day stinking drunk, staggering about going to burlesque shows and having a good time full of fleshy pleasures.

Far and away my favorite line is "been five-o'clock shaddow boxing all around the town".

Monifah – Touch It Lyrics 16 years ago
A good song -beware the version that omits the "Fuck" lyric. Anyway the unedited version is pretty clear in its meaning; the girl wants to know if the listener is able to please her.

Billy Idol – Neuromancer Lyrics 16 years ago
Perhaps this song is about the novel? Connection is tennuous at best but it's there if you look for it. The book "Neuromancer" by William Gibson is terrific and a must-read for anyone. Giving away who the "Neuromancer" is would be a major spoiler, but it fits.

Skee-Lo – I Wish Lyrics 16 years ago
I hear you, Biso. I miss humor in Rap. I can't stand any of the modern crap. It's a pretty self-explanatory song; everybody wants to look better, be successful (I think here he's using "Baller" both as to mean a ball-player and as a successful person in general), and have a good-looking girl.

Concrete Blonde – Take Me Home Lyrics 16 years ago
These lyrics are not quite correct (at least to the version I have) -at the end of my cut she sings the chorus again changing it to herself "If you see me getting crazy... take me home..." My version also changes the last verse to "if things get better every day you stay alive, then I'm amazed every day that the sun decides to rise".

Anyway, regardless of how she sings it, it's about how at the end of the day, there's always that one person who you can come back to, share a drink with, tell your worries to, and wake up next to, because they truly care about you -and sometimes you're that person to someone else.

Jerry Reed – East Bound and Down Lyrics 17 years ago
Being as this is the main title theme to "Smokey and the Bandit", I'd say it's pretty obvious that it sums up the plot of the movie -a highly illegal challenge to smuggle a truckload of beer across several states in record time.

Leonard Cohen – First We Take Manhattan Lyrics 17 years ago
Well it's not quite so simple if you read the lyrics....
Not quite terrorism but revolution, quite a different concept. "Take" implies "by force of arms" and actually holding it, not just damaging/destroying/killing. The narrator is a revolutionary who couldn't change the system from within so he'll do it from without, with the help of "we" -whomever they may be, but judging by the backup singers' lines, his supporters are devoted.

My take is that the song is writeen about a future, corrupt, world-government (as Manhattan and Berlin have little connection outside of being major cities), and the narrator is going to overthrow it, or at least try to.

And that line about the monkey and the plywood violin? Well perhaps our narrator's just crazy. Typical of a Leonar Cohen song, there's litte in the way of solid interperitation...

Alanis Morissette – My Humps (The Black Eyed Peas cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
Oh dear. It seems that Alanis has covered the worst song in the world. But she did it to be funny and poke fun at the song and just how goddamn stupid it is. You have to listen to the music, because it's done in a very typical Alanis style, and the video just caps it off because she mocks the style of the original. Sarcasm runs thick!

Oxo – Whirly Girl Lyrics 17 years ago
The name of this song, and presumably the lyric, was going to be "Worldly Girl" -and that's exactly what it describes; a fun-loving, fast moving girl who circulates in high places and is a blast to be with.

Cher – Heart Of Stone Lyrics 17 years ago
There is a mistake in these lyrics, the last bit in parenthesis should read "With a heart of stone, love's not resurrected" -Which pretty much sums it up. The jist of the song is that it might just be better to be able to easily forget your failed love rather than be "knocked out of the ring by love".

Concrete Blonde – God Is a Bullet Lyrics 17 years ago

Concrete Blonde – Dance Along The Edge Lyrics 17 years ago
The story of my life, if you will.
Two people in a relationship that even they aren't sure where it's going. They know they're having a good time but they're afraid of where it might go, having seen other people meet their fate which turned out to be an unpleasant one. Yet still they keep trying because they love eachother even if they're uncertain about certain things.

Tom Petty – Mary Jane's Last Dance Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the song is almost exactly the opposite of what most people think it is -a woman being used as a metaphor for a drug. Rather it strikes me more as a drug being used as a metaphor for a woman. Mary Jane is a very common term for marijuana and he outright states that he's using it in the last verse "I hit my last number, walked to the road" (A "number" is an older slang for a joint).

So the girl, who he names "Mary Jane" is something else -mind-altering, like drugs. It may be just me but I've always read the second verse from the girl's point of view. Everything he says about her suggests that she moves around a lot and never stays in one place too long. The "last dance" is of course the last time they have sex, again she's described in drug-like terms "one more time to kill the pain" By the end of the song, he realizes she's gone, and is using the "mary jane" to dull his feelings for "Mary Jane".

Might not be right but it's as good as any explanation.

Suzanne Vega – Undertow Lyrics 17 years ago
To me this song speaks of a great outpouring of hatred. She's singing about someone she hates, and destroying them utterly.
The lines "Once I thought only tears could make us free" say that at first she has turned her feeling inward and is crying about her hatred. The next verse
"I wanted to learn all the secrets
From the edge of a knife
From the point of a needle
From a diamond
From a bullet in flight
I would be free then"
Is unmistakably violent and she's talking about how she's going to destroy this object of her hatred.

Now maybe this is about the ravages of anorexia but the lyrics read too litreally for that to work too well, at least in my mind. They basically read "I hate you. I'm going to kill you."
