i kind of liked this song on nuclear winter. i loved it acoustic. and now, i love it on the album! kudos to chris walla for the production -- it sounds a lot like what they had been trying to accomplish on nw except mastered. i'm a fan of the political commentary, i think it's done really well in this song. i'd like to see more of it in the future but the boys told me that they're done with taking a stand on issues like this because it's very alienating -- bummer :( the scream during "time" will always get me though. love this |

i can't believe nobody has added this yet! it's really grown on me and i think it's my favorite new original song on arrows! (clearly i love live there, turn off this song, tunnels aka new version of ramshackle house, we sing in time, etc) the phrase "arrows out" is so powerful to me. i feel like this song is basically an awesome way to say "shit sucks now, but i'm going to keep going and it's going to get better." i wish they played this song live -- and i mean, i guess they can't considering the time restraints of being an opener -- but i can't wait for the lonely forest to blow up. i'm thrilled that they're going to tour with death cab...i was talking to john and he described it as "shit your pants exciting" overall, i freakin love this song and this band and i hope everyone is as moved by this song as i am! |

i gotta say that i adore the acoustic version. he has a lot of passion in it. i think that it's about a guy who's a mess, and his girlfriend still loves him but can't continue living with this mess of a boyfriend. he loves her, but he's just too screwed up to do anything. |

i love this song. :) my huge attempted line-by-line analysis is as follows (i have a lot of time on my hands, forgive me): This year is old like a dying father Whose will is out of spite i feel like this means that the end of the year is lasting a long time. it's existing out of spite for him. the year is only going on to remind him every day of how he left fftl, and how it's hard for him to establish his own identity away from the band. We pile into separate agendas With the songs of defeat Playing in our minds i think that this means that everyone has their own agenda and they really want to achieve it, but they bring themselves down before they even have a chance to give their all to completing their own agenda. i think that sonny wanted to leave fftl for a while, but couldn't because of he thought he'd never make it on his own. For you I give and give away My unhappiness in color For your abandoned heart to see them To bloom into your world he was miserable and honest about it. i think this has to do with the songs from fftl. he gives and gives his unhappiness away honestly in the songs, and the music bloomed into the abandoned hearts' worlds. they didn't feel so alone anymore. Binded to your perfect lands To live like somber cattle i think this relates to the beginning, about achieving your agenda. people are bound to their lives, and are unwilling and upset about it. And we're gathered as seeds To sprout mid Sahara For who for what? i think this means that everyone's oppurtunities present themselves at the worst and most difficult times. this relates to his split from fftl, because it was obviously a painful and upsetting transition for everyone. i don't really know if this is right, but it's the way that i understand the song. it's gorgeous, no matter what anyone thinks it means :) kudos to sonny for producing such fantastic songs. |

personally, i don't think this is about destroying the music scene. i think this is about being pained, and NEEDING to send it back ten-fold. it's like revenge, except worse. this is such a hard feeling to explain...it's like when you fight with someone, and you say things that aren't even true just to cause them pain. i think that in this song, max just needs to emotionally hurt this person as much as possible. just my opinion, though |

i don't think that the cat's symbolize something as major as wars, but something more like fights. max sees a pushy person instigate yet another fight with another person. the pushy one has been a bully, for lack of a better word, for a very long time. i took it that max gets that people could actually help solve other's problems, but we're all just too lazy and apathetic or we fear being hurt in the process; it is insignificant to help because we are only people who are rather pointless and doomed in the end. i love this cynicism. the rest just means that we accept everything, like stoners, no sleep, racism, etc. we could do so many things to help others, but max writes like nobody tries or cares because we are all amazingly selfish, lazy, and the only person important to us is ourselves. this is my second favorite song on the album. |

this is my interpretation of it. i think that there is a couple, maybe like romeo and juliet. they aren't supposed to like each other, but they do and the girl does a better job of hiding it. i think that they're both in the same state of mind and can't stand it, but they don't want to end their lives and become something so insignificant. it's an angry relationship. they fight when in the open, and they use words like daggers to make it seem like they aren't into each other (this would be the metaphor). i agree that they do enjoy sex, but i wouldn't think it's angry...just hidden, and apparently max wants to do it hard as to "kill" her. he will show his "male parts" (haha) if she shows him how to have sex. this is such a weird interpretation. i think that max has to pretend to be angry and nasty when he is around her. then i think it changes when the girl kills herself. i think that maybe the girl wanted their relationship to be more open, perhaps? i think this really changes max into a more depressed person. then he is here, and i think he is ready to commit suicide, and does not want the suicide to "deny him." he is now cold on the inside, but he has always been; and i guess he feels guilty that he wasn't more warm to this girl. i think that the "lets make a toast, lets do the oil spill, let the seagulls pick out the sins" just refers to death in general. many things die in oil spills, and the use of "but suicide makes a meal for birds" in the beginning kind of implies that he's going to commit suicide because he's screwed up so many times before, and now he just wants life to be over. he wants to die now and wants the danger of knowing that his last moments are near. if he gets the courage to die, maybe they can be together again. then i think he's just reminiscing at the end, and wishing that he hadn't been so angry, nasty and cold to the girl while she was sill alive. this is probably a completely wrong interpretation, but it's what i got from the song. max bemis is genius for being able to write about major things like death and sex so metaphorically. |
