I think this song is a combination of what Wes Gil has said about music and what everyone else is saying about drugs. Almost as if his music is a drug. The biggest drug reference in the song, "when the needle hits the vein" can also be interpreted as a musical reference. Now I know that most of you people on here are post-vinyl but when "needles" hit the groves/"veins" on a record the music plays. Nothing like the real thing. Also, I think when the songs says "you can't win child/We've all tried too/you've been lied to/it's already inside you" could be a reference to music and how powerful it is. Sometimes when you hear a certain song you can't help but sing it or dance to it. It may just happen to be so catchy that it grabs you from the inside and forces you to act a certain way. Possibly a reference back to this very song. One more thing: he may not mean Run in a literal sense of the word. If the song is in fact talking about music as a drug, then he is possibly just telling you to dance. Get up and "Move". |

I use to listen to this song and only really pay attention to the "You make me real" part. Definitely love that part, but then I started listening to the rest and began to notice all the automobile imagery..."arching autobahn""Sheila rides""intake eyes""vapor trails""highway". Made me start thinking that he's singing about a car that allows him to just get away from it all, even if for only a moment. Like riding in that car is what calms and centers him. It's that time that he spends alone, driving down the road at night that gives him the ability to reflect on his life. Could be the hum of the motor or the sound of the wind passing by but being in that car is like a therapy session. I always get this picture in my head when I listen to this song, of a cherry red car with black racing stripes, convertable, top down driving on a winding road at night with the headlights on and the only other light being the moon. I'm sure the song is deeper in meaning than that, but that's what I see when I listen to it. Great song, very relaxing. |

I'm going through a break up with my girlfriend right now. She chose to end it and I'm still in love with her. I desperately wanted to get back together with her, but since it has been a couple of months, I just want to start to forget her and move on. This song fits perfect with that situation. "The pressure is building I want to break away" these feelings of sadness have grown so much that I don't want to feel them any more. "Motivation is lacking the point starts to fade" after so long, I don't feel as strongly about getting back together as I use to. What I wanted I'm no longer sure of any more. I could go on but I'm sure most of you get the point. Great song. I'm looking forward to my New Beginning. |

Not sure what everything else means but when I hear Quietly, you're overrated anyhow and currently, you've spread yourself so thin. I think about my ex-girlfriend. We just seperated and she is going out trying to do everything to forget me and these lines make me feel better about it. Seems like she's trying to do too much (spreading herself thin). Love the song, love the album. |

This song is so raw and amazing. Definately one of my favorite on the album at this time. I think this could be a self-critique by Billy about his music and lyrics and the music and lyrics of others. I semi-agree with Infra. I think Billy is talking about his old style of writing compared to the tactics used on this current album. A lot of the music and lyrics on this album sound Gish-esque and Cherub Rock-ie (with the exception of For God and Country and Pomp and Circumstances). He is obviously beating on himself and it could be because he has brought back a sound that he knew would work for the album instead of pushing his boundaries and experimenting more as he has always tried to do with his music. I'm not saying that this album is completely lacking newness, but a good bit of the albums sounds like a return to older styles (which I am thankful for, I wasn't a big fan of Adore, Machina or Machina II). Whatever the meaning, the music is amazing. |

I believe this song is talking about how the media only lets you see what they want you to see in order to sway your opinions. I'm reminded of a No Use For A Name song 'Countdown'-"Newspaper headlines do tell us what is right or what is wrong? I want to know exactly what the fuck is going on. The media has built a fortress all around our open minds, will I see it broken down before I lay down and die" I feel like that is the message Incubus is trying to get across. That we have been made to think a certain way according to what we have seen, which may or may not be the entire truth. We only get snippets of reality and only the pieces that they want us to hear/see. |

It's like he's saying, I'm going to reset my brain and do what feels right instead of what I was told is right. Breaking free from the forces that hold him on a path that others want him to travel. Mapping his own destiny. Becoming his true self and not what others think he should be. Letting go of fear and restrictions and relying on impulse. This song draws great parallels with one of my most favorite Incubus songs, 'Out From Under'. Seems like a more mature version of that song. |

Love the metaphors: -his offensive intent is the bullet-his words he is meaning to do harm with. -his body a trigger finger-that which will spark the reaction, since he is a musical artist/poet it will be through his body that he will get his message across by writing. -his pen is a pistola-what he writes will be what what causes the damage, and his pen is his instrament of damage. I love the pen being a gun metaphor...I always think of someone holding a gun to a piece of paper, pulling the trigger and words pouring out onto the page. Reminds me of the Gnarls Barkley video for 'Crazy'. Seems like an anti-war, anti-physical vilence statement. The saying, "you can do more good with a pen" comes to mind. Artists and writers have a way of influencing people their works. Using their mediums to rally up against what is wrong. Very few words but very meaningful. |

bjwedel, what the hell are you talking about. the title of the song 'Online' is only used to mask the blatantly obvious reference to cocaine. "Once I clean my mirror I'm a be feeling fine" is a reference to users snorting up coke off of mirrors (watch a movie like blow or scar face, you'll understand). When he gets his fix he's happy. The next lines seem to reference how hard life. He's using the drug to temporarily escape the rat "race." He also realizes that when he's on the drug he feels superhuman or better than he was when he's not on the drug but that it's not really true. The drug has affected his mind and his perceptions. (Feel like the life of the party/But it's all in your mind/ On the line) He again speaks about how cocaine can alter your perceptions of yourself by making you seem like you have no troubles. (Even when you're falling/Just pretend you're flying) The last lines of the song capture the feelings of a user who is coming down and realizing his surroundings. It seems to say that even though he may be with a bunch of people (who are all doing cocaine) there is this disconnection between them and even a hostility. (Don't cross that line) ie. Do your line but you better not touch mine. |

I think this song deals with someone who can't get a girl out of his mind. "Roads" could represent how some people say that thoughts are travelling through their mind. "How do these thoughts travel through their minds?" on metaphoric roads. The line, "she waits for a new face" could mean that she is going to be there until someone elses face takes the place of hers. I think the lines "The arms red and injured/She wants to rise/She can't 'till we have faced" means that he is holding down the thought of the girl into his head. Injured arms could be on account to being tied down and the thought could be struggling to excape his mind but he doesn't want to let it go becuase he hasn't found another to replace it yet. He won't let the thought of her go until he has another face to replace hers. The next lines I believe represent his struggle to try and keep the memory of the girl in his mind. He doesn't want to let go of the girl that is haunting his mind. "I'll cut your armies down/and turn your heart," coult represent his endless struggle to try and get her back or to keep her. "You wait, I'll wait/I'll lie awake for you," seems to mean that he's determined to get this person back. I think that when he says "I'll break down," he could be literally breaking down from the struggle. At this point and leading up to it, the music gets aggressive it could represent his break down. The aggressive music subsides and turn back into the calm melody from the beginning. I also got to thinking that the "new face" could represent a time when he sees the girl again. So in this case, he is not trying to replace her with someone else, only with a new memory. A very deep song and definately pleasant to listen to. It has it all; deep lyrics, calming melodies, heavy guitar and bass rifts and amazing singing. One of my favorites on the new album. |
