The Cardigans – My Favourite Game Lyrics 3 years ago
Domestic abuse, literally. From the perspective and that destructive head space of the habitually abused. “my heart is black and my body is blue””you’re losing your mind, again” “I try but you’re still the same”

There is death at the end; perhaps literal but certainly allegorical in the sense that she is giving up on her mission. “you’re losing a saviour and a saint”. Game over.

Deep Purple – Smoke on the Water Lyrics 13 years ago
Well, there is that "Unforgiven" by Metallica that everyone also learns.. though maybe that is the intro and Smoke on the water is the riff.

The baseline to Hit the road Jack is easier though. :) Dun-Dun-Dun-Dun Dun-Dun-Dun-Dun

Deep Purple – Holy Man Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this is both a "coming of age" story told in first person as well as a commentary of gurus, religion/spiritualism and how these are empty shields against emptiness and loneliness.

The coming of age is told through the three verses. In the first verse, our protagonist goes to catholic church ("called to Madonna") where he is berated for having hung out with some kind of guru (~speaking to a holy man about moon and sun"). He claims to be inexperienced and unable to tell who is a true guru but is willing to be shown the way ("the river to follow").
In the second verse, our protagonist is exploring - he took a riverboat up that river figuratively speaking and came to roads end there - from where he is stepping ashore it is for himself to find the way. I liken this to being taught basic meditation but thereafter having to continue by oneself in order to move on.
In the third verse, our hero(?) has gone far down the rabbit hole. He has wandered that desert path for too long, his original identity is lost among all the mumbojumbo. He is back among us, but he is different - he did not find any answers but lost his illusion that there are any. His mother does not see her son in him and other people see a meditation man. He plays the part of the guru but is bitter.

The chorus repeats the theme of loneliness and longing for human connection. The verses tell us that the way of the holy man certainly will not save us from it.

Garbage – Supervixen Lyrics 14 years ago
Ah, mission statement!

And its great to have this point of view represented. Too many lyrics about unrequited love, selfdepreciating love, wasted love and all told from the perspective of the poor wronged or losing party (usually a woman, too) - this one for all the man- and woman-eaters out there. I'm a believer, btw... ;)

Kent – Dom Andra Lyrics 15 years ago
For me, this is clearly about a generation; 70-talisterna. Its looking back at ones own youthful enthusiam through the knowledge that not just did we turn out like our parents unlike our dead set expectation and struggle - but our parents probably didn't think that -they- would either.

In some ways it is a very pessimistic observation, in others it could perhaps speak of the peace one could feel when not racing to have people begging you to take over the world..buddhism?

Skunk Anansie – You'll Follow Me Down Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree that it is a scary song. My take:

This is about a person telling another person something rather dreadful - like that they cheated on them, frauded them, lied substantially, got them mixed up with criminals, isn't who they said they were, take your pick.

I think the person has been holding back the truth for some time, fearing the consequences of coming clean since they should mean an end to things as they have been; "surviveD tonight".

And now that other person is not backing away like all sanity in the world would have them - they are staying with the cheater, thief, liar, destructor - and the first person is just abandoned; how can I tell you this, finally fess up and by doing so face my own inferno - and you are joining me? you should know and do better - I AM bad; survivE tonight.

And with this the first person loses herself/himself in the darkness - apathetically saying that yes, if you stay with me, and you apparently will, you panicked chicken, you will die. I have even just told you and you know that you will die by and with me.

I find soo much story in these lyrics, the angst, fear, disbelief, disdain and apathy of the protagonist could fill a novel or a movie and still Skin expresses it in a few lines. And what I see in so many Skunk lyrics - the other person, the one that takes abuse and keeps on taking it.

Björk – Bachelorette Lyrics 17 years ago
Bexz0n shares my thoughts on this; she is describing the events of love affair (one/many not important).

And, in my understanding, she comes off as quite the man-eater... "I'm your one-way street" but no mention of him being her's and she burns him while he walks the path she has set for him.

She is so lively and enticing, a fountain of life (blood), and she draws him in, alluring him to fall in and she feels alive herself through the interaction with him. She toys with him or is wary of handling her game, sending him away knowing he'll be back or lost (not so much to her as to himself). And indeed, she may come to like her game too much and in the end the curtains are gone and the mess is in the open and "loving me is the easiest thing" is both a last prayer for another chance and a mantra of strength for the future (a future that might repeat the past).

Possibly a much too personal interpretation and apparently, judging from seemingly knowledgable comments above, not the intended story of the makers but I like it this way anyway. Its a brilliant piece and works many ways. :)

The Smashing Pumpkins – Le Deux Machina Lyrics 17 years ago
Chinosoma, you are talking about Deus ex Machina ... which btw is Latin and usually interpreted "god from the machine" or "god on the machine". Le Deux Machina is not that - "les deux" in french means "the two" or "both", could Billy just have forgotten an "s"..?

Garbage – Milk Lyrics 17 years ago
Sometimes I think its the drug talking; it is luring and crying and seducing and pining for the abuser and it can be intense like a red hot kitchen or calm and soothing like a deep blue ocean. And sometimes it appears weak so the abuser will feel he can handle it, but then it is strong and keeps him in its grasp. When lost (out of the abuser's system) it brings the cruel withdrawal syndrome promises sweetness if it could just reunite with the user... And heroin is white like milk.

The Cardigans – For What It's Worth Lyrics 17 years ago
Its about destroying the perfect fuck-buddy silent/non-silent agreement. It was all good but then she got the feelings and now it means too much and the perfection is over.

Nicely liberating feeling for her to be true to her feelings mixed with the sadness for what is no more and a slight fear for the uneven bargaining that is to come of this truth.

Skunk Anansie – Weak Lyrics 17 years ago
I usually think of this song as anger after having been broken up with. Complementing the feeling of rejection with the outright offense and sarcastic disbelief that the breaking party is a little pile of moldy shit one could not take seriously again.

I do really like the religious interpretation above though. It works for me. Thanks.

Skunk Anansie – She's My Heroine Lyrics 17 years ago
About complete surrender for the urges that keep you with that person that is so fatal for you. You know she is bad for you, and you still give in to her because you can not not. Its a very dark and yet seductive place, because you feel so good while being destroyed.

The addictive person in this song seems to feed off of the protagonist's weakness, or at least completely ignore the ill she might be doing her.

I love the wordplay of the title.
